Course Overview

The ECO 07 Solved Guess Paper 2026 from Unnati Educations is a 12-question, 21-page answer file built for learners sitting the June 2026 and December 2026 Term-End Examinations of ECO-07 Elements of Statistics. Every question in it was chosen after reading six consecutive IGNOU question papers, from June 2023 through to the December 2025 paper, and every answer was written from the IGNOU textbook rather than paraphrased from the internet.

Most learners who reach this course have already worked through ECO-01 and ECO-02 and are comfortable with theory. Statistics feels different. There are nine survey steps, six probability sampling methods, six properties of a good average, and examiners expect those counts exactly. This file gives you the counts, the named authorities, and the closing evaluative line that ECO-07 scripts usually lack.

What the ECO 07 Guess Paper 2026 File Actually Contains

The file holds 12 examination-style questions with complete model answers, a six-session frequency table covering 30 syllabus topics, a mark-split breakdown, and a priority label on every question. Nothing in it is a summary of the block. Every answer is written the way it would need to be written in the answer booklet.

Each of the 12 questions carries four pieces of information before the answer begins. You see the block and unit it maps to, the sessions in which that topic has already been set, the internal mark split such as 3+7 or 5+5, and a rough word target for each part. That header alone tells you how to budget your two hours.

The answers themselves follow a fixed discipline. They open with a definition attributed to a named statistician, work through the numbered points the textbook actually lists, and close with a two or three line evaluative conclusion. Bowley, Horace Secrist, Yule and Kendall, and Wallis and Roberts all appear where the book places them.

If you are also collecting material for the other papers in your semester, the wider IGNOU Solved Guess Paper library covers the remaining commerce and management course codes on the same pattern.

Five Sample Questions and Answers from the ECO 07 Solved Guess Paper

Five of the twelve questions are reproduced below so you can judge the answer quality before you pay for anything. Two carry the full model answer as it appears in the file. Three show the opening definition and the answer skeleton so you can see the structure without the whole thing being given away.

Sample 1 · Q1 Statistics Meaning and Business Importance (full answer)

Block 1 Unit 1 · Marks 3+7 · Set in June 2023, June 2024 and June 2025 · Priority HIGH

Question: Define the term 'Statistics' and discuss the importance of Statistics in Business and Management.

Part (a) — Meaning of Statistics

"Statistics may be defined as the collection, presentation, analysis and interpretation of numerical data."

The word 'statistics' is used in two senses. In the plural sense, it means numerical statements of facts or data; in the singular sense, it refers to the body of statistical methods or the science of statistics. Bowley further called it the science of counting, the science of averages, and the science of measurement of social organism. The most comprehensive plural-sense definition is by Horace Secrist, who states statistics are aggregate of facts affected to a marked extent by multiplicity of causes, numerically expressed, enumerated or estimated according to a reasonable standard of accuracy, collected in a systematic manner for a predetermined purpose, and placed in relation to each other.

Part (b) — Importance of Statistics in Business and Management

With growing size and increasing competition, modern business has become complex. The separation of ownership and management has produced professional management, whose decisions depend on relevant statistical information. Statistical methods are now widely applied across sales, purchases, production, marketing and finance. Wallis and Roberts observe:

"Statistics may be regarded as a body of methods for making wise decisions in the face of uncertainty."

Key Areas of Application

  1. Market & Production Research: Statistical methods are widely applied in market research, demand forecasting, and production research to study consumer behaviour and plan output.
  2. Investment Policies: Statistical analysis of returns, risks and market trends assists firms in formulating sound investment and financial policies.
  3. Quality Control: Statistical quality-control techniques are used by manufacturing units to maintain uniform standards in mass-produced goods.
  4. Economic Forecasting: On the basis of past sales and indicators, statistical techniques help estimate the likely demand for products in future periods.
  5. Auditing & Sampling Inspection: Sampling techniques are used in auditing accounts and in inspecting large consignments instead of complete enumeration.
  6. Decisions under Uncertainty: One element common to all problems faced by managers is the need to take decisions under uncertainty — statistical methods provide the techniques to deal with such situations.

Conclusion: Statistics, both as numerical data and as a science of methods, is indispensable to modern business. From production planning to quality control and forecasting, it enables managers to convert data into informed, evidence-based decisions.

Sample 2 · Q10 Skewness Positive and Negative (full answer)

Block 4 Unit 16 · Marks 10 · Set in December 2025 · Priority HIGH

Question: What is Skewness? Distinguish between Positive and Negative skewness with examples.

Meaning of Skewness

"The word 'skewness' is used to denote the extent of asymmetry in the data. When the frequency distribution is not symmetrical, it is said to be 'skewed'. Skewness literally denotes asymmetry or lack of symmetry."

A frequency distribution is said to be symmetrical if the frequencies are symmetrically distributed about the central value, i.e. values equidistant from the middle have equal frequencies. In such distributions, mean, median and mode are equal and the curve is bell-shaped. If folded along the line through the mean, one half is the mirror image of the other.

A symmetrical distribution has zero skewness. In practice, distributions are usually asymmetrical — some slightly, some highly. The study of skewness, therefore, examines how items are distributed around the central tendency.

Purposes of Studying Skewness

  1. It helps in finding out the nature and the degree of concentration — whether items are concentrated in higher or lower values.
  2. It indicates whether the empirical relationship Mode = 3 Median − 2 Mean (which holds for moderately skewed distributions) is applicable.
  3. It helps in knowing whether the distribution is normal or departs from normality.
Positive versus negative skewness as compared in the ECO-07 answer file
BasisPositive SkewnessNegative Skewness
Tail DirectionLonger tail towards the higher values (right-hand side)Longer tail towards the lower values (left-hand side)
Position of ModeMode lies on the left of the bulk of the dataMode lies on the right of the bulk of the data
Order of AveragesMean > Median > ModeMean < Median < Mode
ConcentrationFrequencies concentrated in lower values, fewer items at higher endFrequencies concentrated in higher values, fewer items at lower end
ShapeElongated bell-shape stretched to the right; extreme case is J-shapedElongated bell-shape stretched to the left; extreme case is reverse-J-shape

Extreme positive skewness arises when frequencies are highest in the lowest values and then steadily fall — this is a J-shaped data. Extreme negative skewness arises when frequencies are lowest in the lower values and steadily increase, with the highest frequency representing the highest values — this is a reverse-J-shaped distribution.

Conclusion: Skewness measures the lack of symmetry in a distribution. While positive skewness pulls the tail to the right (Mean > Median > Mode), negative skewness pulls it to the left (Mean < Median < Mode). Identifying the type of skewness helps determine where the data concentrates and how far it departs from normality.

Sample 3 · Q4 Sampling Random and Non-Random Methods (opening extract)

Block 1 Unit 2 · Marks 2+8 · Set in June 2024 and December 2025 · Priority HIGH

Question: What is Sampling? Explain the various methods of Random sampling and Non-probability sampling.

"When in a survey, instead of studying the whole group (universe), a selected representative section of items is studied, the selected items are called the sample and the technique of selection is called sampling."

Sampling allows reliable conclusions about the universe to be drawn from a much smaller, manageable group of items. Sampling methods fall into two broad categories — probability (random) sampling and non-probability sampling.

Simple Random Sampling: Also known as chance or lottery sampling — each item has an equal chance of selection; random numbers identify the sample units. Best for homogeneous populations.

The complete answer then works through the remaining five probability methods, namely systematic, stratified, cluster, area and multi-stage sampling, followed by the three non-probability methods of convenience, judgement and quota sampling, each with the textbook illustration. The petrol pump example for convenience sampling is included because examiners look for it.

Sample 4 · Q7 Ideal Average with Geometric and Harmonic Mean (opening extract)

Block 3 Units 10 and 13 · Marks 5+5 · Set in June 2025 and December 2025 · Priority HIGH

Question: Write short notes on the following: (a) Essentials of an ideal average; (b) Geometric Mean and Harmonic Mean with examples.

"An ideal average is a single value that describes the characteristics of the entire data and around which other items of the data congregate."

As suggested by the eminent statisticians Yule and Kendall, an ideal average should possess the following six characteristics:

Easy to understand and simple to compute: The average should be easy to make out and its computation should also be simple.

Rigidly defined: It should be defined by a mathematical formula so that different persons computing it derive the same answer, free from personal bias.

Part (b) carries both worked numerical illustrations in full. The geometric mean of 4, 8 and 16 is shown as the cube root of 512, giving 8, alongside the antilog method. The harmonic mean of 2, 4 and 8 is worked out as 3 divided by 0.875, giving 3.43, with a note on when rates such as speed or price per unit call for HM rather than the arithmetic mean.

Sample 5 · Q12 Statistical Error and Reasonable Accuracy (opening extract)

Block 1 Units 2 and 3 · Set in December 2024 and December 2025 · Marks 5+5 · Priority HIGH

Question: Distinguish between the following: (a) Statistical Error and Mistake; (b) Reasonable Accuracy and Spurious Accuracy. Explain with examples.

"In statistics, the word 'error' means the difference between the true value and the estimated or approximated value of an item. A mistake, on the other hand, is inaccuracy arising from the compilation of data — such as arithmetical miscalculation."

Key distinction: errors cannot be completely eliminated but can be minimised; mistakes can be eliminated completely. Errors are inevitable in statistical work; mistakes are not.

The full answer names the three sources of error, being errors of origin, errors of inadequacy and errors of manipulation, and then contrasts reasonable with spurious accuracy through the five-student age example where stating an average of 15.8 years from rough monthly data is shown to be false precision. A four-row comparison table closes the answer.

How the ECO 07 Elements of Statistics Guess Paper Was Built

The selection method was frequency plus gap analysis across six consecutive papers, not guesswork. Six question papers from June 2023 to December 2025 were transcribed topic by topic against the 16 units, then scored.

Two signals decided whether a topic entered the file. The first was straightforward repetition, where a topic had been set three or more times in six sessions. Standard deviation, personal interviewing, ratios and percentages, and classification of data all cleared that bar comfortably.

The second signal was the recent gap. A topic set heavily in 2023 and 2024 but absent from the last two sessions carries a rebound risk, and IGNOU rotates within a small pool for a 50-mark paper. Statistical survey steps and diagrammatic presentation entered the file on that basis rather than on raw count.

The December 2025 paper was weighted most heavily because it is the freshest evidence of what the current setter favours. Skewness and the error versus mistake distinction both appeared there for the first time in the window, which is why they carry HIGH priority despite a count of one. Students who want to run the same check themselves can pull the source papers from our IGNOU Previous Year Question Paper archive.

Answers were then written from the IGNOU self-learning material for Blocks 1 to 4 rather than from third-party notes, which is why the counts in them match the book exactly. Where the book gives nine steps, the answer gives nine. The official unit-wise material sits on eGyanKosh if you want to cross-check any answer against the source.

Block and Unit Index of ECO 07 Elements of Statistics

ECO-07 runs to 4 blocks and 16 units, and the 12 questions in this file draw from 11 of those 16 units. The table below shows which units are represented and which are not, so you know exactly what the file does and does not cover.

Being honest about the gap matters more than claiming total coverage. Units 11, 12 and 15 are computation units, and the file is a theory-answer file. You will still need to drill median, mode and standard deviation sums yourself, and the frequency table in the next section tells you how often each of those has actually been set.

Topic Frequency Analysis for ECO 07 Elements of Statistics

Standard deviation is the single most repeated topic in ECO-07, appearing in 4 of the last 6 papers. Below is the abridged version of the 30-topic table that ships inside the file, showing the highest-value topics only.

Read the priority column against the count column rather than instead of it. A count of one with a HIGH label means the topic surfaced in the most recent paper, which in a rotating pool usually signals a live area rather than a spent one.

Anyone rebuilding this table independently will need the six source papers side by side, which is why the ECO 07 Question paper collection is worth downloading even if you use this analysis as your starting point.

ECO 07 Elements of Statistics Exam Pattern and Mark Splits

ECO-07 is a 50-mark paper written in 2 hours, in which eight questions are set and any five must be attempted, each carrying 10 marks. The pattern has held steady across all six sessions examined.

Internal splits recur in a small set of shapes. A 10-mark question arrives either whole, or split 3+7, or split 2+8, or split 5+5 as two short notes, or occasionally 4+3+3. Recognising the split in the first thirty seconds tells you how to divide the page.

Word budgeting follows from the split. A whole 10-mark theory answer sits comfortably at roughly 400 to 450 words. Each half of a 5+5 short-note pair needs about 150 words. Overwriting is the commonest error in ECO-07 scripts and it costs time on the numericals rather than earning marks on the theory.

Roughly half the paper is computational in most sessions. Expect at least one sum on mean, median, mode, standard deviation or Karl Pearson's coefficient of skewness, and expect a pie diagram or histogram construction. A simple calculator is permitted; programmable models are not. The paper is available in both English and Hindi.

Programmes That Carry ECO 07 Elements of Statistics

ECO-07 appears as an elective commerce course in the Bachelor's Degree Programme under the older Bachelor of Commerce scheme, and also within the Bachelor of Business Administration programme. Learners in either programme sit the same paper.

BDP learners usually meet ECO-07 in the second year alongside the other ECO-series electives, and it is often the first quantitative paper they attempt after two years of descriptive commerce theory. That shift catches people out, which is why the frequency table matters more here than in a pure theory paper. Commerce learners working through the wider course list will find the BCOMG guess Paper set covers the rest of the degree on the same block-mapped pattern.

BBA learners encounter the same course code as part of their quantitative grounding before the management-specific papers begin. The answer discipline is identical, though BBA candidates tend to find the business-application sections in Q1 and Q8 more intuitive. The parallel BBA prog guess Paper collection follows the same six-session analysis method for the remaining BBA course codes.

Verify your own programme structure on ignou.ac.in before you plan a session, since elective baskets are revised periodically and this page is not an official university source.

What to Skip in ECO 07 Elements of Statistics This Session

Five areas appeared once or not at all across six papers and are safe to deprioritise if your revision time is short. Skipping deliberately is what makes a two-week revision plan viable.

Detailed logarithm-based computation from Unit 4 has been rare in recent papers, and conceptual familiarity is enough. Full numerical problems on multi-stage and area sampling are unlikely, though the theory of both must be known because sampling methods are a recurring theory question.

Combined standard deviation problems involving three or more groups are too long for the time available and have not been set in the window examined. Two-group combined SD is worth practising. Weighted geometric and harmonic mean need the formula and one short example, not a full computational drill.

Statistical quality control appears only as an application inside the Q1 answer and has never been set as a standalone question in these six sessions. Learn the one line about it and move on.

ECO 07 Elements of Statistics Guess Paper Questions Answered

Is the ECO 07 Solved Guess Paper valid for both June 2026 and December 2026?

Yes. The file is prepared for both Term-End Examination sessions of 2026 because IGNOU sets ECO-07 from the same 16-unit syllabus in June and December, and the rotation pool does not reset between them. The frequency analysis inside covers June 2023 through December 2025, so it reflects the setter pattern applying to both 2026 sittings without any separate edition being needed.

How many questions does the ECO 07 Elements of Statistics guess paper contain?

It contains 12 examination-style questions with complete model answers across 21 pages. Five of those twelve are previewed on this page, two in full and three as opening extracts. The remaining seven arrive with the complete file. Each question carries a header showing its block and unit mapping, the sessions it has previously been set in, the internal mark split and a suggested word target.

Does the ECO 07 guess paper include solved numerical problems?

No. The 12 solved answers cover the theory core of ECO-07, drawn from Units 1 to 10, 13, 14 and 16. Median, mode and standard deviation computation from Units 11, 12 and 15 are not worked out in this file. The frequency table does tell you how often each numerical topic has been set, so you know which sums deserve your practice time.

Which blocks of ECO 07 Elements of Statistics does the file cover?

All four blocks are represented. Block 1 supplies five questions on statistics, surveys, data types, sampling and errors. Block 2 supplies three on classification, presentation and tabulation. Block 3 supplies the central tendency and averages question. Block 4 supplies dispersion and skewness. Eleven of the sixteen units are covered directly, with the remaining five being computation units.

Are the ECO 07 answers written from the IGNOU book or from other sources?

They are written from the IGNOU self-learning material for Blocks 1 to 4. That is why the counts match exactly, with nine survey steps, six probability sampling methods and six essentials of an ideal average. Definitions are attributed to the statisticians the book names, including Bowley, Horace Secrist, Yule and Kendall, and Wallis and Roberts, because examiners look for those attributions.

What is the ECO 07 Elements of Statistics exam pattern for 2026?

ECO-07 is a 50-mark paper written in two hours. Eight questions are set and candidates attempt any five of them, each worth 10 marks. Internal splits observed across the six sessions examined are 10, 3+7, 2+8, 5+5 and 4+3+3. A simple calculator is permitted but programmable models are not allowed. The paper is offered in both English and Hindi medium.

Which programmes include ECO 07 Elements of Statistics as a course?

ECO-07 sits in the Bachelor's Degree Programme under the older Bachelor of Commerce scheme, and it also appears in the Bachelor of Business Administration programme. Candidates in both write the same paper with the same mark structure. Elective baskets are revised periodically, so confirm your own programme structure against the official IGNOU website before finalising your session plan.

How is the ECO 07 Solved Guess Paper delivered after ordering?

The complete PDF is sent directly on WhatsApp at 9899436384 once your course code and session are confirmed. There is no account registration, no app download and no waiting period. Send the code ECO-07 along with whether you are appearing in June 2026 or December 2026, and the file arrives in the same chat thread you used to enquire.

Can the ECO 07 guess paper replace reading the IGNOU study material?

It is not designed to. The file compresses six sessions of question-paper evidence into 12 high-probability answers, which is a revision tool rather than a substitute for the blocks. Learners who have already read the units use it to prioritise and to fix answer structure. Learners who have not read anything should still work through Blocks 1 to 4 first.
