Every answer is written from the IGNOU study material for the course, not from a general mathematics textbook. That matters more in BCOC-134 than in most commerce papers, because the examiner marks the method. In the Cramer's rule answer you will see the determinant written out, then substituted, then verified back into both equations. Verification is a marks-carrying step that most students skip.

Solve the following system of equations by Cramer's rule: 2x + 5y = 1 and 3x + 2y = 7.

Answer

The given equations are 2x + 5y = 1 and 3x + 2y = 7. Comparing with the standard form a1x + b1y = c1 and a2x + b2y = c2, we have a1 = 2, b1 = 5, c1 = 1 and a2 = 3, b2 = 2, c2 = 7.

Step 1: Find the determinant D
D = (2 × 2) − (5 × 3) = 4 − 15 = −11

Step 2: Find the determinant Dx
Replace the first column with the constants.
Dx = (1 × 2) − (5 × 7) = 2 − 35 = −33

Step 3: Find the determinant Dy
Replace the second column with the constants.
Dy = (2 × 7) − (1 × 3) = 14 − 3 = 11

Step 4: Calculate the values of x and y
x = Dx / D = −33 / −11 = 3
y = Dy / D = 11 / −11 = −1

Verification
Substituting x = 3, y = −1 in the first equation: 2(3) + 5(−1) = 6 − 5 = 1.
Second equation: 3(3) + 2(−1) = 9 − 2 = 7. Both equations are satisfied.

Sample 2 of 5 · Local Maxima and Minima of a Function (20 marks)

Find all the points of local maxima and minima and the corresponding values of the function: f(x) = 2x3 − 21x2 + 36x + 20.

Answer

Given f(x) = 2x3 − 21x2 + 36x + 20. Differentiate with respect to x:

f′(x) = 6x2 − 42x + 36 = 6(x2 − 7x + 6) = 6(x − 1)(x − 6)

For local maxima and minima, f′(x) = 0, so 6(x − 1)(x − 6) = 0, giving x = 1, 6.

Now find the second derivative: f″(x) = 12x − 42.

At x = 1
f″(1) = 12(1) − 42 = −30. Since f″(1) < 0, there is a local maximum at x = 1.
f(1) = 2(1)3 − 21(1)2 + 36(1) + 20 = 2 − 21 + 36 + 20 = 37.
So the local maximum point is (1, 37).

At x = 6
f″(6) = 12(6) − 42 = 72 − 42 = 30. Since f″(6) > 0, there is a local minimum at x = 6.
f(6) = 2(6)3 − 21(6)2 + 36(6) + 20 = 432 − 756 + 216 + 20 = −88.
So the local minimum point is (6, −88).

Given fixed cost = ₹9,00,000, variable cost = ₹300 per unit and selling price = ₹750 per unit, find the cost function C(x), revenue function R(x), the break-even point, and the profit at quantity = 1000 units.

Answer

Given: Fixed Cost = ₹9,00,000, Variable Cost = ₹300 per unit, Selling Price = ₹750 per unit.

1. Cost Function C(x)
C(x) = Fixed Cost + Variable Cost × x, therefore C(x) = 900000 + 300x.

2. Revenue Function R(x)
Revenue is obtained by multiplying selling price per unit by the number of units sold, therefore R(x) = 750x.

3. Break-Even Point
At the break-even point, C(x) = R(x).
900000 + 300x = 750x
750x − 300x = 900000
450x = 900000
x = 900000 / 450 = 2000

Thus the break-even quantity is 2000 units. At this quantity, R(2000) = 750 × 2000 = ₹15,00,000 and C(2000) = 900000 + 300 × 2000 = ₹15,00,000. Hence the break-even point is (2000, ₹15,00,000).

4. Profit at 1000 Units
Profit = R(x) − C(x). At x = 1000, R(1000) = 750 × 1000 = ₹7,50,000 and C(1000) = 900000 + 300 × 1000 = ₹12,00,000.
Therefore Profit = 750000 − 1200000 = −450000. Since the profit is negative, there is a loss of ₹4,50,000.

What is a time series? Discuss briefly the utility of time series analysis and explain its components.

Introduction. A time series is a set of observations arranged in chronological order at regular intervals of time, such as daily, monthly, quarterly or yearly. Time series analysis is used to study past data, identify patterns and trends, and forecast future values. It is widely used in business, economics, finance and government planning.

Meaning of Time Series. A time series is a sequence of numerical observations recorded over successive periods of time. The observations are collected at equal intervals and are arranged according to time. Examples include monthly sales of a company, annual production of wheat, daily stock market prices and quarterly profits of a business.

Utility of Time Series Analysis

  1. Forecasting Future Trends: It helps predict future sales, demand, production, prices and profits based on past data.
  2. Business Planning: Business organisations use time series analysis for production planning, inventory management and budgeting.
  3. Policy Formulation: Governments use time series data for economic planning and policy decisions.
  4. Performance Evaluation: It helps compare present performance with past performance and measure growth over time.
  5. Demand Estimation: It assists firms in estimating future demand for products and services.
  6. Financial Planning: Banks and financial institutions use time series analysis for investment decisions and financial forecasting.

2. Seasonal Variation (S). Seasonal variation refers to regular and repetitive fluctuations occurring within a year due to seasons, festivals, weather or customs. Example: increased sales of woollen clothes during winter or higher demand for sweets during festivals.

3. Cyclical Variation (C). Cyclical variation refers to long-term oscillations around the trend caused by business cycles such as prosperity, recession, depression and recovery. These cycles usually extend over several years. Example: rise and fall in industrial production during different phases of the business cycle.

4. Irregular or Random Variation (I). Irregular variation consists of sudden and unpredictable changes caused by unforeseen events such as natural disasters, wars, strikes, pandemics or political disturbances. Example: a sudden decline in tourism due to a natural calamity or a pandemic.

Two patterns are worth naming. First, differentiation and the statistics definition question have never been absent in five sittings, which is why both sit at the top of the paper. Second, types of matrices appeared four times and then vanished in December 2025, and a gap like that after a four-year run is the classic setup for a return in June 2026.

Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme for BCOC 134 Business Mathematics and Statistics

The BCOC-134 Term-End paper runs for 3 hours and carries 100 marks, with Question 1 compulsory and any two questions to be attempted from each of Part A and Part B. All questions carry equal marks.

Question 1 is the one students underestimate. It splits into a Part A half and a Part B half, usually 10 plus 10, and often asks for four short answers of 2.5 marks each within either half. Those are definitional marks, and they are the cheapest 20 marks on the paper. Nobody fails BCOC-134 on Question 1; people fail it by attempting the hardest optional numerical instead of the second easiest.

Word targets that the guess paper answers are written to: 450 words for a 20 mark answer, 250 words for a 10 mark answer and 150 words for a 5 mark answer. Length alone earns nothing, but an answer that is half the expected length usually signals to a checker that a section has been left out.

For numericals, write the formula first, substitute the values, then compute, and verify wherever verification is possible. Steps carry marks in this paper even when the final figure slips, which is precisely why compressing a solution into three lines costs more than it saves.

A Ten Day Revision Routine for BCOC 134 Business Mathematics and Statistics

Ten days is enough for this paper if you spend six of them on Part A numericals and four on Part B theory, practising each numerical twice with changed figures. The routine below assumes roughly three hours a day.
