Course Overview

BZYET 143 Solved Guess Paper 2026 is a 23-question, exam-focused answer set for IGNOU course BZYET-143 Insect Vectors and Vector Borne Diseases, prepared for the June and December 2026 term-end exams. It is built for B.Sc. (General) Zoology learners who want to walk into a 2 hour, 50 mark paper knowing which answers to write and how long each one should be.

BZYET-143 is the Discipline Specific Elective in Zoology that studies insects which carry disease to humans, the pathogens they carry and the ways to control them. The textbook runs across two volumes, and most learners find it hard to decide what to learn first. This page shows you five full answers so you can judge the quality before you order.

What the BZYET 143 Solved Guess Paper Covers in Insect Vectors and Vector Borne Diseases

The guess paper answers 23 questions: 10 full 10 mark questions, 9 two-part 5+5 questions, 2 short note sets, 1 differentiate pairs set and 1 compulsory Q1 practice set.

Every question is mapped to its block and tagged HIGH or MEDIUM, based on how often the topic returned in recent papers. You will not find padding here. Topics like Zika and chikungunya, which did not appear in six recent papers, are kept to a mention so your time goes to lice, sand flies and IVM.

The answers are written in simple English with short numbered points, because that is how BZYET-143 examiners read a 10 mark answer. If you are preparing more than one course this term, the full range of IGNOU Solved Guess Paper sets follows the same definition, points and conclusion format.

Think of this BZYET 143 Guess Paper as the shortest route through the textbook. It does not replace your reading, but it tells you which unit to open, which diagram to practise and which scientific names you cannot afford to misspell.

5 Solved BZYET 143 Sample Questions from Insect Vectors and Vector Borne Diseases

Below are 5 of the 23 answers exactly as they appear in the PDF, one from each of the four blocks plus one extra from Block 4. Read one fully and check whether it is clear enough to reproduce in the exam.

Sample 1Guess paper Q6Block 1, Unit 55+5 marksAsked in 3 of 6 papers

Sample 1: Modes of Transmission and Vectorial Capacity

Question: (i) Write a note on the modes of transmission of diseases by biological vectors. (5) (ii) What is vectorial capacity? Discuss the factors affecting it. (5)

(i) Modes of Transmission of Disease

A disease vector (vector is a Latin word which means 'bearer') is any agent (a human, animal or microorganism) that carries and transmits an infectious pathogen into another living organism.

  1. Propagative transmission: The pathogen only multiplies in the vector. There is no change of stage. Example: dengue and JE viruses; plague bacilli in rat flea.
  2. Cyclopropagative transmission: The pathogen changes its stages and also multiplies. Example: malaria, where one zygote gives more than 2,00,000 sporozoites.
  3. Cyclodevelopmental transmission: The pathogen changes stages but does not multiply. Example: filaria, where one microfilaria gives only one infective larva.
  4. Vertical transmission: The pathogen passes from the female vector to offspring through eggs (transovarial transmission), then from stage to stage (trans-stadial).

(ii) Vectorial Capacity

Vectorial capacity is a measurement of the efficiency of vector-borne disease transmission.

Formula: VC = m a2 C Pn / (−loge P). Here m is vector density per host, a is feeding rate, C is vector competence, P is daily survival and n is the extrinsic incubation period.

  1. Anthropophilic biting: Vectors that prefer human blood are more efficient.
  2. Longevity: The vector must live longer than the incubation period of the pathogen.
  3. High productivity and density: More vectors mean more infection.
  4. Bio-rhythm with host: Painless or night biting helps feeding without disturbance.
  5. Transovarial transmission: Adults are infected from birth, as in Aedes.
  6. Environmental and intrinsic factors: Temperature and immune status affect pathogen growth.

Conclusion: Biological vectors transmit in four ways. Vectorial capacity shows how efficiently a vector spreads disease.

Sample 2Guess paper Q17Block 2, Unit 810 marksAsked in 6 of 6 papers

Sample 2: Medical Importance of Three Human Lice

Question: Explain the medical importance of three types of lice that are ectoparasitic on humans.

The body louse (Pediculus humanus corporis), head louse (Pediculus humanus capitis) and pubic or crab louse (Pthirus pubis) are the three types of sucking lice found in humans.

1. Body Louse

  1. Pediculosis and vagabond disease: Itching, allergy, and dark, tough skin from long scratching.
  2. Epidemic typhus: Caused by Rickettsia prowazekii. Man gets it when louse faeces are scratched into bite wounds, not by the bite. Treated with doxycycline.
  3. Louse-borne relapsing fever: Caused by Borrelia recurrentis. Spreads when infected lice are crushed. Treated with tetracycline.
  4. Trench fever: Caused by Bartonella quintana. Also called five-day fever. First seen in soldiers in World War I.

2. Head Louse

  1. Low disease role: Not important as a pathogen carrier. Only in the lab can it carry R. prowazekii.
  2. Irritation: Heavy infestation causes severe irritation and secondary infection.
  3. Plica polonica: Scabby crusts form on the head with lice below them.
  4. High risk group: School children. Girls are infested 2 to 4 times more than boys.

3. Pubic (Crab) Louse

  1. No disease: No proof that it spreads any disease in nature.
  2. Pruritus: Bites cause itching and allergic reaction.
  3. Blue spots: Maculae caeruleae (0.2 to 0.3 cm) appear some hours after biting.

Conclusion: Only the body louse is a real disease vector. Head and pubic lice mainly cause irritation and skin problems.

Sample 3Guess paper Q7Block 3, Unit 1010 marks with diagramAsked in 2 of 6 papers

Sample 3: Life Cycle of Malaria Parasite

Question: Describe the life cycle of malaria parasite with the help of a well-labelled diagram.

Malaria is an Anopheles-borne disease caused by the Plasmodium parasite (a protist).

Malaria is caused by P. vivax, P. falciparum, P. malariae and P. ovale. P. vivax and P. falciparum are common in India. The parasite needs two hosts: human and female Anopheles.

A. In Human Host

  1. Entry: Infected female Anopheles bites and injects sporozoites with her saliva.
  2. Liver stage: A sporozoite enters a liver cell and becomes a schizont. It makes 30,000 to 40,000 merozoites within six days.
  3. RBC stage: Merozoites enter red blood cells. Each becomes a trophozoite and feeds on haemoglobin.
  4. Bursting of RBC: The schizont releases 8 to 24 new merozoites. Toxic pigment (haemozoin) causes chills and fever.
  5. Gametocytes: Some merozoites form male and female gametocytes.

B. In Female Anopheles

  1. Fertilisation: Gametocytes are sucked with blood. Gametes fuse in the midgut to form a zygote.
  2. Ookinete and oocyst: The zygote becomes a motile ookinete. It crosses the gut wall and forms an oocyst.
  3. Sporozoites: The oocyst divides and releases sporozoites. They reach the salivary glands.

The cycle in the liver is exoerythrocytic, in RBCs it is erythrocytic, and in the mosquito it is sporogonic (about two weeks). Plasmodium cannot complete its cycle below 20 °C. The labelled diagram for this answer is included in the full PDF.

Conclusion: Plasmodium multiplies asexually in the human liver and RBCs and sexually in Anopheles, so the mosquito is needed to spread malaria.

Sample 4Guess paper Q12Block 4, Unit 1310 marksAsked in 4 of 6 papers

Sample 4: Kala-azar: Sand Flies, Transmission and Control

Question: Name any three species of sand fly and write a brief account of the diseases spread by them. Explain the transmission of kala-azar by sand flies and write their control measures.

Visceral leishmaniasis is a chronic disease caused by Leishmania donovani.

Sand flies belong to family Psychodidae, subfamily Phlebotominae. In the Indian subcontinent two genera, Phlebotomus and Sergentomyia, have 46 species. Phlebotomus argentipes is the only known vector of kala-azar in India.

Sand fly species, the diseases they spread and their pathogens (BZYET-143 Unit 13)
Sand fly speciesDiseasePathogen
Phlebotomus argentipesVisceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar)Leishmania donovani
P. sergenti, P. papatasiAnthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (oriental sore)Leishmania tropica
P. salehiZoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasisLeishmania major
Phlebotomus speciesSand fly feverPhlebovirus

Transmission of Kala-azar

  1. Bite of sand fly: Female P. argentipes injects promastigotes while taking a blood meal.
  2. Other routes: Sexual contact, blood transfusion, congenital infection and accidental inoculation.
  3. Symptoms: Fever, enlarged spleen and liver, anaemia, low WBC and platelet count.
  4. PKDL: After recovery, whitish skin spots may form (Post Kala-azar Dermal Leishmaniasis).

Prevention and Control

  1. Indoor residual spraying (IRS): Spray houses and animal shelters with pyrethroids or organochlorines. Works best with case detection.
  2. Personal protection: Protective clothing, repellents and insecticide-treated bed nets.
  3. Habitat reduction: Plaster cracks in walls. Remove organic waste and unused buildings.
  4. Reservoir control: Control dogs and rodents. Deltamethrin dog collars prevent bites.
  5. Sanitation: Dispose of garbage away from houses.

Conclusion: P. argentipes spreads kala-azar in India. IRS, bed nets and clean surroundings are the main control measures.

Sample 5Guess paper Q20Block 4, Unit 155+5 marksAsked in 4 of 6 papers

Sample 5: IVM Key Elements and Insecticide Resistance

Question: (i) Explain the concept, objectives and key elements of Integrated Vector Management. (5) (ii) What are the ways by which development of insecticide resistance in vectors can be avoided? (5)

(i) Integrated Vector Management (IVM)

Integrated vector management (IVM) is, in fact, a rational decision-making process to optimise the use of resources for vector control.

Objectives: IVM improves the efficacy, cost effectiveness, ecological soundness and sustainability of vector control. It uses the tools and resources already available.

  1. Advocacy, social mobilisation and legislation: Add IVM to policies, make public health laws and empower communities.
  2. Collaboration: The health sector works with other public and private sectors.
  3. Integrated approach: Tackle many diseases together. Mix chemical and non-chemical methods.
  4. Evidence-based decision-making: Plan as per local ecology, research and monitoring.
  5. Capacity-building: Provide infrastructure, money and trained people.

(ii) Ways to Avoid Insecticide Resistance

The indiscriminate use of chemicals has made disease vectors resistant to them.

The main causes are detoxification mechanisms and target insensitivity.

  1. No overuse: Avoid indiscriminate use of insecticides.
  2. Different modes of action: Avoid insecticides with a similar mode of action.
  3. Single mechanism: Avoid insecticides that cause more than one resistance mechanism.
  4. Stage-specific use: Do not use the same insecticide on adults and larvae.
  5. Non-chemical methods: Use biopesticides, larvivorous fish and net screens.
  6. Synergists: Mix synergists so insecticides work at lower doses.
  7. Rotation: Rotate insecticide groups with different modes of action.

Conclusion: IVM is a smart, decision-based use of all control methods. Careful and rotated insecticide use prevents resistance.
