Course Overview

The MPH 001 Solved Guess Paper 2026 is a fourteen question, fully answered preparation pack built for the June 2026 and December 2026 Term End Examinations of Mathematical Methods in Physics. Every answer was written after reading five years of MPH 001 papers, including the December 2025 paper, so the questions you revise are the ones the examiner keeps coming back to.

Most learners on this course do not fail because the mathematics is beyond them. They fail because two hours is not enough time to attempt five ten mark derivations you have never rehearsed. This pack fixes the rehearsal problem. You get the question, the full working, and the finishing line the examiner is looking for.

What Is Inside the MPH 001 Guess Paper for 2026

The MPH 001 guess paper contains fourteen exam style questions with complete answers, spread across all five blocks of Mathematical Methods in Physics. Five of those answers are printed in full further down this page. The remaining nine come with the complete pack.

The split is deliberate. Block 1 and Block 2 between them account for roughly half of every paper we studied, so they carry six of the fourteen questions. Block 3 carries three, Block 4 three and Block 5 two. That mirrors how the eight question paper is actually assembled.

Each question in the file arrives with four things attached. The exam style wording, the block and unit it belongs to, a priority label of high, medium or low, and the answer itself with every intermediate step written out. Nothing is left as an exercise for the reader.

The answers are written to length. A ten mark question gets around 250 words of prose plus the full derivation. A five mark part gets around 150 words. You are not memorising an essay, you are memorising a shape you can reproduce in twenty minutes under pressure.

MPH 001 Sample Questions With Full Solutions

Five of the fourteen questions are reproduced below in full, one from each block, so you can check the depth of the working before you enquire. These are complete answers, not extracts. What you read here is the standard of every remaining answer in the file.

Legendre Recurrence Relation From the Generating Function

Question: Starting from the generating function for Legendre polynomials, obtain the recurrence relation (2n + 1) x Pn(x) = (n + 1) Pn+1(x) + n Pn-1(x). (10 marks)

Answer. The generating function is g(x, t) = (1 - 2xt + t2)-1/2 = Σ Pn(x) tn, summed from n = 0 to infinity, valid for |t| < 1.

Differentiate g with respect to t, holding x fixed:

∂g/∂t = (x - t) (1 - 2xt + t2)-3/2

Multiplying both sides by (1 - 2xt + t2) and recognising that (1 - 2xt + t2)-1/2 is g itself gives the key identity:

(1 - 2xt + t2) ∂g/∂t = (x - t) g

Now substitute the series on both sides. On the left, ∂g/∂t = Σ n Pn(x) tn-1, so the left side becomes Σ n Pn tn-1 - 2x Σ n Pn tn + Σ n Pn tn+1. On the right we get x Σ Pn tn - Σ Pn tn+1.

Collect the coefficient of tn on each side. The left side contributes (n + 1) Pn+1 - 2nx Pn + (n - 1) Pn-1. The right side contributes x Pn - Pn-1.

Since the two power series are equal for all admissible t, the coefficients of tn must match:

(n + 1) Pn+1 - 2nx Pn + (n - 1) Pn-1 = x Pn - Pn-1

Gathering like terms gives (n + 1) Pn+1 - (2n + 1) x Pn + n Pn-1 = 0, which rearranges to the required result.

Conclusion. (2n + 1) x Pn(x) = (n + 1) Pn+1(x) + n Pn-1(x). This is the recurrence that lets you climb from P0 = 1 and P1 = x to any higher polynomial without differentiating Rodrigues' formula.

Eigenvalues, Orthonormal Eigenvectors and Diagonalisation

Question: For the real symmetric matrix A with rows (2, 1) and (1, 2), obtain the eigenvalues, the orthonormal eigenvectors and the diagonalising matrix. (2 + 5 + 3 marks)

Answer. A real symmetric matrix has real eigenvalues, and eigenvectors belonging to distinct eigenvalues are orthogonal. Both facts are used below.

Eigenvalues. The characteristic equation is det(A - λI) = 0, that is (2 - λ)2 - 1 = 0. Hence (2 - λ) = ±1 and the eigenvalues are λ1 = 3 and λ2 = 1.

Eigenvector for λ = 3. Solving (A - 3I)v = 0 gives -v1 + v2 = 0, so v1 = v2. An unnormalised eigenvector is (1, 1). Its norm is √2, so the normalised eigenvector is (1/√2)(1, 1).

Eigenvector for λ = 1. Solving (A - I)v = 0 gives v1 + v2 = 0, so v2 = -v1. The normalised eigenvector is (1/√2)(1, -1).

Check orthogonality: the dot product of (1, 1) and (1, -1) is 1 - 1 = 0, as guaranteed for a symmetric matrix with distinct eigenvalues. The two vectors therefore form an orthonormal basis of R2.

Diagonalising matrix. Place the normalised eigenvectors as columns. S = (1/√2) with rows (1, 1) and (1, -1). This matrix is orthogonal, so S-1 = ST, and STAS is the diagonal matrix with entries 3 and 1 down the leading diagonal, in the same order as the columns of S.

Conclusion. Eigenvalues 3 and 1, orthonormal eigenvectors (1/√2)(1, 1) and (1/√2)(1, -1), and an orthogonal diagonalising matrix S with STAS = diag(3, 1). Always state that S is orthogonal, because that single line earns the transpose shortcut.

Cauchy Riemann Equations in Polar Form

Question: Show that in polar coordinates the Cauchy Riemann equations take the form ∂u/∂r = (1/r) ∂v/∂θ and ∂v/∂r = -(1/r) ∂u/∂θ. (10 marks)

Answer. Write f(z) = u(x, y) + i v(x, y) and change to polar coordinates using x = r cosθ and y = r sinθ. In Cartesian form the Cauchy Riemann equations are ∂u/∂x = ∂v/∂y and ∂u/∂y = -∂v/∂x.

Apply the chain rule to u:

∂u/∂r = (∂u/∂x) cosθ + (∂u/∂y) sinθ

∂u/∂θ = -(∂u/∂x) r sinθ + (∂u/∂y) r cosθ

The same two expressions hold for v with u replaced by v throughout.

First relation. Take ∂v/∂θ = -(∂v/∂x) r sinθ + (∂v/∂y) r cosθ. Substitute ∂v/∂x = -∂u/∂y and ∂v/∂y = ∂u/∂x. This gives ∂v/∂θ = r[(∂u/∂y) sinθ + (∂u/∂x) cosθ], and the bracket is exactly ∂u/∂r. Hence ∂u/∂r = (1/r) ∂v/∂θ.

Second relation. Take ∂v/∂r = (∂v/∂x) cosθ + (∂v/∂y) sinθ. Substituting the same two Cartesian relations gives ∂v/∂r = -(∂u/∂y) cosθ + (∂u/∂x) sinθ. Comparing with ∂u/∂θ above, the right side is -(1/r) ∂u/∂θ. Hence ∂v/∂r = -(1/r) ∂u/∂θ.

Conclusion. The polar Cauchy Riemann equations are ∂u/∂r = (1/r) ∂v/∂θ and ∂v/∂r = -(1/r) ∂u/∂θ. They are the natural form to use whenever the function is written in terms of r and θ, for example when testing the analyticity of ln z or zn.

Laplace Transform Initial Value Problem and a Fourier Transform

Question: (a) Using Laplace transforms, solve y'' + 2y' + 5y = 0 with y(0) = 1 and y'(0) = 7. (b) Obtain the Fourier transform of the single square pulse f(x) = 1 for |x| < 1 and f(x) = 0 otherwise. (7 + 3 marks)

Answer (a). Let Y(s) be the Laplace transform of y(t). Using L{y'} = sY - y(0) and L{y''} = s2Y - s y(0) - y'(0), the equation transforms to:

s2Y - s - 7 + 2(sY - 1) + 5Y = 0

Collecting terms gives Y(s2 + 2s + 5) = s + 9, so Y(s) = (s + 9) / (s2 + 2s + 5).

Complete the square in the denominator: s2 + 2s + 5 = (s + 1)2 + 4. Write the numerator to match: s + 9 = (s + 1) + 8. Therefore

Y(s) = (s + 1) / [(s + 1)2 + 22] + 4 × 2 / [(s + 1)2 + 22]

Inverting term by term with the shifting theorem gives y(t) = e-t(cos 2t + 4 sin 2t).

Verification. y(0) = 1 as required. Differentiating and setting t = 0 gives y'(0) = -1 + 8 = 7. Both initial conditions are satisfied, so the solution is correct.

Answer (b). With the convention F(k) = ∫ f(x) e-ikx dx over the whole real line, the integral collapses to the interval where f is non zero:

F(k) = ∫ e-ikx dx from x = -1 to x = 1 = [e-ikx / (-ik)] from -1 to 1

This evaluates to (eik - e-ik) / (ik) = 2 sin k / k. At k = 0 the limit is 2, matching the area under the pulse.

Conclusion. y(t) = e-t(cos 2t + 4 sin 2t), and the square pulse transforms into the sinc shaped function F(k) = 2 sin k / k. If your paper uses the symmetric convention, multiply by 1 over √(2π) and say so.

Abelian Groups and the Multiplication Table of S3

Question: What is an Abelian group? Construct the multiplication table for the group of permutations of the set {1, 2, 3} and state whether it is Abelian. (5 + 5 marks)

Answer. A group is a set G with a binary operation that is closed and associative, contains an identity element, and gives every element an inverse in G. The group is called Abelian, or commutative, when ab = ba for every pair of elements. The integers under addition form an Abelian group; the identity is 0 and the inverse of n is -n.

The permutation group S3. The permutations of {1, 2, 3} number 3! = 6, so the group has order 6. Label them: e is the identity, a and b are the two three cycles (123) and (132), and p, q, r are the three transpositions (12), (13) and (23).

Multiplication table for the permutation group S3, read as row element followed by column element
Row elementeabpqr
eeabpqr
aabeqrp
bbearpq
pprqeba
qqpraeb
rrqpbae

Every row and every column contains each element exactly once, which is the rearrangement theorem in action and a quick way to check your table for errors.

Conclusion. S3 has order 6 and is not Abelian, since ap = q while pa = r. It is the smallest non commutative group, which is why the examiner keeps returning to it. Note that the subgroup {e, a, b} of three cycles is Abelian, so a non Abelian group can still contain commutative subgroups.

Those are 5 of the 14 questions. The remaining 9 arrive with the same depth of working in the complete pack.

How the MPH 001 Guess Paper Was Built

Fourteen questions survived from a pool drawn out of five years of MPH 001 Term End papers, with the December 2025 paper weighted most heavily. Nothing was guessed in the casual sense of the word. The list is what the arithmetic of repetition produced.

The first pass was pure transcription. Every question from every paper we could source was typed out and tagged to a block and a unit. That turns a stack of scanned PDFs into something countable.

The second pass counted repeats. A topic that appears in three of ten papers behaves very differently from one that appeared once in 2021 and never again. Anything crossing the repeat threshold went straight onto the high priority list.

The third pass looked for gaps. IGNOU tends to rotate within a block rather than abandon it, so a Block 4 topic that has been quiet for three sessions is often overdue. Those went on as medium priority insurance.

The last pass was the writing itself. Each answer was drafted against the IGNOU self learning material for that unit, so definitions, constants and notation match the book rather than a textbook the examiner has never opened. If you want to sanity check the exam format yourself, the official IGNOU MPH 001 June 2024 question paper is published on the university web services portal, and the block texts sit on eGyanKosh.

One habit worth borrowing even if you never buy anything from us. Keep your own copy of every IGNOU Previous Year Question Paper you can find for this course and read them side by side before you open a single unit. Twenty minutes of that will reshape how you study.

MPH 001 Block and Unit Index

Mathematical Methods in Physics is organised into five blocks, and the eight question paper draws roughly two questions from Block 1, two from Block 2, two from Block 3 and one each from Blocks 4 and 5. Knowing that ratio tells you where your revision hours belong.

MPH 001 Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme

The MPH 001 Term End paper runs for two hours, carries 50 marks, sets eight questions and asks you to attempt any five. A calculator is allowed and symbols carry their usual meanings, so notation is never redefined for you.

Most questions carry ten marks. Some arrive whole, such as a single derivation. Others split as 5 plus 5, and occasionally as 2 plus 5 plus 3 when the examiner wants eigenvalues, eigenvectors and the diagonalising matrix in sequence. Read the mark split before you start writing, because it tells you how many distinct results are expected.

Two hours across five questions is twenty four minutes each, and that is before you spend time choosing which five to attempt. Choose in the first three minutes, then do not revisit the decision.

The arithmetic that matters most: five clean answers at seven marks each is 35 out of 50. Eight rushed half answers is usually less. Depth beats coverage in this paper, every single session.

Answer Writing Strategy for MPH 001

Marks in MPH 001 sit in the intermediate steps, not the final line, so an answer that reaches the right result by magic scores worse than one that arrives slowly and shows its reasoning. Write for a reader who is checking method.

Open with the governing statement. Name the theorem, quote the generating function, or write the definition you are about to use, then define every symbol that follows. Two lines of setup routinely carry two marks.

Keep derivations vertical, one operation per line. When you multiply through, say what you multiplied by. When you substitute, say what you substituted. Examiners award steps they can follow without reconstruction.

Verify wherever verification is cheap. Substituting your Laplace solution back into the initial conditions costs one line and demonstrates command of the method. It also catches sign errors before the examiner does.

Draw the diagram when the topic has one. Contours for residue problems, dispersion sketches, the unit circle for complex mappings. A labelled sketch communicates faster than a paragraph and often carries its own mark.

Close with one evaluative sentence tying the result back to the physics or to the next step. It reads as understanding rather than reproduction, and it costs you fifteen seconds.

Who Should Use This MPH 001 Solved Guess Paper

This pack suits MSCPH learners sitting MPH 001 in June 2026 or December 2026 who have limited revision time and need a ranked, fully answered question list rather than another textbook. It is a finishing tool, not a substitute for the blocks.

It fits you well if you are working or studying part time and can give this course a fortnight rather than a semester. It fits you if you have attempted MPH 001 before and want to know precisely which topics to close out. It fits you if your mathematics is rusty and you need worked derivations rather than hints.

It fits you less well if you are aiming for a distinction across the whole syllabus, or if you enjoy the subject and want depth for its own sake. In that case read the blocks properly and treat this as a rehearsal set at the end. Learners in that position often work through a wider MSCPH Guess Paper set across several courses instead.

One honest caveat. A guess paper narrows your preparation, and narrowing carries risk. IGNOU can and does set an unexpected question. Treat these fourteen as your core and keep one medium priority topic per block in reserve.

How to Get the Complete MPH 001 Solved Guess Paper

Send your course code on WhatsApp to 9899436384 and we will confirm availability, price and delivery for the complete MPH 001 Solved Guess Paper 2026. The nine questions not shown on this page arrive with the same depth of working as the five above.

Message us with three things: the course code MPH 001, your programme, and the session you are appearing in. That is enough for us to confirm the current file and get it to you, usually the same day.

If you are not sure this is the right material for you, read the five sample answers again first. They are printed in full precisely so that the decision is yours rather than ours.

MPH 001 sits in the first year of the Master of Science (Physics) - MSCPH programme, and most learners take it alongside the classical mechanics and electromagnetic theory courses. Preparing it in isolation is possible but harder than it needs to be.

Learners who take other courses in the same programme usually want the same treatment for each of them. The full IGNOU Solved Guess Paper library is organised by course code, so you can pick up the rest of your semester in one visit.

A short note on practical work, because it comes up in almost every enquiry. MPH 001 is a theory course with no laboratory component and therefore no practical file to submit. Practical work in MSCPH is assessed through the separate laboratory courses, so nothing on this page applies to those. If you need practical file support for a lab course, ask for it by its own course code.

Before the exam, work through the past papers once with a timer running. Nothing else exposes your weak block as quickly, and it takes an afternoon.

MPH 001 Guess Paper Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MPH 001 Solved Guess Paper 2026?

The MPH 001 Solved Guess Paper 2026 is a fourteen question preparation file for Mathematical Methods in Physics, with a complete worked answer for every question. It was compiled after studying five years of Term End papers for this course, including December 2025, and covers all five blocks. Five of the fourteen answers are published in full on this page so you can assess the quality before enquiring on WhatsApp.

How many questions does the MPH 001 guess paper contain?

It contains fourteen questions in total. Five of them are reproduced with full solutions on this page, one from each block, which leaves nine questions that come with the complete pack. The distribution follows the shape of the real paper, with six questions from Blocks 1 and 2 together, three from Block 3, three from Block 4 and two from Block 5.

Which blocks of MPH 001 Mathematical Methods in Physics does it cover?

All five. Block 1 on Partial Differential Equations and Special Functions, Block 2 on Vector Spaces, Matrices and Tensors, Block 3 on Complex Analysis, Block 4 on Fourier and Laplace Transforms, and Block 5 on Group Theory. Coverage is weighted rather than even, because the Term End paper itself draws more heavily on the first three blocks than on the last two.

What is the exam pattern for the MPH 001 Term End Examination?

The MPH 001 paper runs for two hours and carries a maximum of 50 marks. Eight questions are set and you attempt any five, so each answer is worth ten marks. Questions may be whole or split as 5 plus 5, and sometimes as 2 plus 5 plus 3. A calculator is permitted and symbols carry their usual meanings, which the paper states in its instructions.

Is the MPH 001 guess paper useful for both June 2026 and December 2026?

Yes. The file targets both the June 2026 and December 2026 sessions of MPH 001, because IGNOU rotates topics within blocks rather than replacing the syllabus between sessions. The priority grid inside the file marks which topics have been quiet recently, and those are usually the ones most likely to surface in the next paper. No other session labels apply to this course.

Are the MPH 001 answers written from the IGNOU study material?

Yes. Every answer was drafted against the IGNOU self learning material for the relevant unit, so definitions, standard results and notation match the printed blocks rather than an external textbook. Where a derivation can be done in more than one way, the file follows the route the block takes. That matters, because examiners mark against the material the university issued you.

How do I get the complete MPH 001 guess paper with answers?

Send a WhatsApp message to 9899436384 with your course code, your programme and the session you are appearing in. We will confirm availability, price and delivery for the MPH 001 file. It is a paid study resource and is delivered directly on WhatsApp after the enquiry is confirmed, in most cases on the same day you message us.

Does MPH 001 have a practical file or laboratory component?

No. MPH 001 Mathematical Methods in Physics is a theory course assessed by an assignment and a Term End paper, with no laboratory work and no practical file. Practical assessment in the Master of Science (Physics) programme is handled through the separate laboratory courses, each with its own course code. If you need practical file help, request it under that laboratory course code instead.

Will the MPH 001 guess paper alone be enough to pass?

For most learners short on time it covers the high yield core, but it narrows your preparation and that carries real risk. IGNOU can set a question outside any predicted list. The safest use is to master these fourteen answers, then keep one medium priority topic per block in reserve so you always have five questions you can attempt with confidence.
