What the BPCS 183 Solved Question Paper June 2026 gives you
BPCS 183 Solved Question Paper June 2026 answers all 8 questions of the IGNOU Emotional Intelligence term-end paper, written in the length and structure the examiners expect.
BPCS 183 Emotional Intelligence is a 4-credit Skill Enhancement Course from the IGNOU School of Social Sciences, taken mainly in the BA (General), B.Com (General) and B.Sc (General) programmes. It teaches what emotions are, how emotional intelligence is measured, and how skills such as self-control and self-regard can be built.
The June 2026 paper was a fair but wide one. Section I moved from the components of emotions to the IQ and EQ debate, Goleman's competencies and EI models with their assessment tools. Section II stayed practical, asking about self-control, self-regard and the use of emotional intelligence in schools and colleges.
Every answer in our file follows the exact BPCS 183 question paper wording, including the mark split printed beside each question. If you are preparing several courses this term, you can find more papers for your programme on our BAG Question Paper page.
Two BPCS 183 Emotional Intelligence answers solved in full
Two questions from the June 2026 BPCS 183 paper, Q3 from Section I and Q5 from Section II, are solved in full below so you can check the depth before you order.
Question 3. Explain the five emotional competencies given by Goleman. (10)
Question 3. Explain the five emotional competencies given by Goleman. (10)
Answer
Daniel Goleman, an American psychologist and science writer, brought emotional intelligence to a wide audience with his 1995 book Emotional Intelligence. In Working with Emotional Intelligence (1998) he described an emotional competence as a learned capability, based on emotional intelligence, that leads to outstanding performance. He grouped these competencies into five dimensions.
The first three are personal competencies, which decide how we manage ourselves. The last two are social competencies, which decide how we handle relationships with others.
- Self-awareness: knowing one's own internal states, preferences, resources and intuitions. It covers emotional awareness, accurate self-assessment and self-confidence. A student who notices rising panic before an exam and names it as anxiety is using self-awareness.
- Self-regulation: managing one's internal states, impulses and resources. It includes self-control, trustworthiness, conscientiousness, adaptability and innovation. Staying calm and polite when a classmate is rude shows self-regulation at work.
- Motivation: the emotional tendencies that guide a person towards goals. Its parts are achievement drive, commitment, initiative and optimism, so a motivated learner keeps going after a low assignment grade instead of giving up.
- Empathy: awareness of the feelings, needs and concerns of others. It covers understanding others, developing others, service orientation, leveraging diversity and political awareness, which means reading the emotional currents of a group.
- Social skills: skill in drawing desirable responses from others. Influence, communication, conflict management, leadership, acting as a change catalyst, building bonds, collaboration and team capabilities all belong here.
Goleman argued that, unlike IQ, these competencies can be learned and improved at any age, which is why organisations use them in training. In a later version developed with Richard Boyatzis, the framework was regrouped into four clusters: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management.
To conclude, Goleman's five competencies show that emotional intelligence is not one trait but a set of skills. Self-awareness is the base, self-regulation and motivation build on it, and empathy with social skills carries these abilities into relationships, teams and leadership.
Question 5. Explain self-control. Describe the strategies to develop self-control. (5+5)
Question 5. Explain self-control. Describe the strategies to develop self-control. (5+5)
Answer
Meaning of self-control: self-control is the ability to manage disruptive emotions, impulses and urges so that behaviour stays in line with long-term goals and social standards rather than momentary feelings. In Goleman's framework it sits within self-regulation, the second of his five emotional competencies.
A person with good self-control still feels anger, envy or temptation, but chooses how to respond instead of reacting at once. Psychologist Walter Mischel's delay of gratification studies at Stanford, often called the marshmallow test, showed that young children differ in how long they can wait for a bigger reward, and that children who distracted themselves waited longer.
Self-control matters because it supports steady study habits, good health, careful money management and calm relationships. It also protects people from aggressive or risky acts that they may regret later.
Strategies to develop self-control:
- Know your triggers: keep a short diary of situations that lead to outbursts or giving in, so that patterns become visible.
- Pause before responding: a few slow breaths or counting to ten creates a gap between the feeling and the action.
- Reappraise the situation: reinterpret an event in a less threatening way, for example by seeing criticism as feedback rather than insult.
- Make if-then plans: decide the response in advance, such as "if I feel like checking my phone while studying, I will put it in another room".
- Change the environment: remove temptations from sight, which usually works better than relying on willpower alone.
- Set small goals: build the habit step by step and reward each bit of progress.
- Look after the body and mind: enough sleep, regular meals and exercise make impulse control easier, and mindfulness trains a person to notice feelings without acting on them.
In short, self-control is not the suppression of emotion but its skilful management, and like other emotional competencies it grows with regular practice.

How the BPCS 183 question paper is set and marked
The BPCS 183 paper has 8 questions of 10 marks each in two sections, and you answer any five, with at least two from each section, in two hours.
| Feature | June 2026 BPCS 183 paper |
|---|---|
| Time and marks | 2 hours, 50 marks |
| Sections | Section I (Q1 to Q4) and Section II (Q5 to Q8) |
| Choice rule | Any 5 questions, at least 2 from each section |
| Marks per question | 10 |
| Word limit | About 300 words per answer |
| Single 10-mark questions | Q3 (Goleman) and Q7 (EI in education) |
| Equal two-part questions (5+5) | Q1, Q4, Q5 and Q8 |
| Unequal splits | Q2 at 6+4 and Q6 at 4+6 |
| Short notes | Q8, two notes of about 150 words each |
| Language | Printed in English and Hindi |
The unequal splits are where marks slip. In Q6, the 4-mark comparison of self-concept, self-esteem and self-regard needs a sharp contrast, while the 6-mark strategy part needs more room. Comparing this with each IGNOU Previous Year Question Paper shows the same 300-word, five-question format every session.

How our BPCS 183 answers are written and checked
Each BPCS 183 answer is written by Prateek Talwar, reviewed by Sheetal Kirola, and checked against the IGNOU course blocks and the exact mark split of the question.
We start from the question wording. Directive words such as "describe", "explain" and "differentiate" decide the shape of the answer, so a differentiate question gets a clear point-by-point contrast while an explain question gets a definition, the main ideas and a short conclusion.
Theory names are checked carefully because this course leans on named thinkers. Goleman, Mayer and Salovey, Reuven Bar-On and the Genos authors are cited with the right model and book, and each answer is cross-checked with the official BPCS 183 Emotional Competencies block on eGyanKosh and the other course blocks.
Every answer also gets a reviewer pass for length. Long answers sit near 300 words and each Q8 note near 150 words, so you can copy the structure into your own words within the two-hour limit.
