What Is Inside the BEGC 105 Solved Guess Paper for American Literature

The file holds 13 questions with complete answers across 14 pages, split as 4 questions of 5 marks, 5 questions of 10 marks and 4 questions of 20 marks.

That split is deliberate. It mirrors the way the BEGC 105 paper is actually set, so you are never revising a 450 word essay for a question that will only ever appear as a 5 mark reference to the context. Each answer begins with a short source line, moves through numbered analytical points, and closes with a conclusion you can write in the last thirty seconds of your allotted time.

The questions run across all four blocks: Arthur Miller, Nathaniel Hawthorne, American short fiction and American poetry. If you have been collecting scattered notes and want the wider set for your other papers too, our IGNOU Solved Guess Paper collection covers the remaining course codes in the same format.

What this file is not: it is not a plot summary, and it is not a shortcut around reading Miller or Hawthorne. It is a revision instrument. You still need to have read the texts once. What we remove is the guesswork about which of the sixteen units will actually earn you marks in three hours.

5 Sample Questions With Answers From BEGC 105 American Literature

Five of the thirteen answers are reproduced in full below, exactly as they appear in the PDF, so you can judge the writing quality before you pay for anything.

We have picked one from each mark band and from three different blocks. Read Sample 5 in particular, because a 20 mark answer is where most BEGC 105 students lose the difference between a second division and a first.

O Captain! My Captain! (Reference to the Context)

Question: Explain the following stanza with reference to the context: "Here captain! dear father! / The arm beneath your head! / It is some dream that on the deck, / You've fallen cold and dead."

Answer. It is an elegy on the death of Abraham Lincoln, President of the USA from 1860 to 1865.

  1. Source. The lines come from Whitman's elegy "O Captain! My Captain!", written in mourning for the assassinated President Abraham Lincoln.
  2. Metaphor. The ship is the United States and the captain is Lincoln. The Civil War is the voyage that has just ended.
  3. The situation. The victorious ship reaches harbour, yet the captain lies fallen cold and dead at the very moment of triumph.
  4. "Dear father". The address shows deep personal grief. Whitman, an ardent admirer, mourned Lincoln as a loss of his own.
  5. Tone. The speaker hopes it is "some dream", which sharpens the contrast between public triumph and private sorrow.

Conclusion. The stanza captures the anguish of losing a beloved leader at the height of victory, through symbol and metaphor.

Emerson's "Brahma" (Reference to the Context)

Question: Explain the following stanza with reference to the context: "If the red slayer thinks he slays / Or if the slain thinks he is slain / They know not well the subtle ways / I keep, and pass, and turn again."

Answer. The sloka of The Bhagavad Gita (2.19) was the inspiration for Emerson's poem.

  1. Source. The stanza opens Emerson's "Brahma", a poem drawn directly from a sloka of The Bhagavad Gita.
  2. Meaning. The killer who thinks he slays and the victim who thinks he is slain are both mistaken.
  3. The Over soul. They do not know the subtle ways of Brahma, the Paramatman, who is both creator and destroyer.
  4. Immortal soul. The soul lives on and only the body dies. It can neither be created nor destroyed.
  5. Indian thought. Emerson's Hindu learning shapes the doctrine that slayer, slaying and slain are mere appearances.

Conclusion. The stanza conveys Emerson's debt to Indian thought and his belief in the timeless, indestructible Over soul.

Realism in American Drama

Question: Write a note on Realism in American Drama.

Answer. "He created an ibsenesque heroine who deftly asserted her autonomy."

  1. Post Civil War shift. Drama after the Civil War moved steadily towards realism, illuminating humble life and criticising social conditions.
  2. Faithful representation. Playwrights concentrated on middle class life and its preoccupations, avoiding larger, more dramatic issues.
  3. Stagecraft. Scenes carried three dimensional settings and the actors spoke authentic sounding dialogue.
  4. Early realists. Bronson Howard's Shenandoah (1874) and William Dean Howells' Mouse Trap (1889) were notable realistic plays.
  5. James A. Herne. Margaret Fleming (1890) was his greatest achievement, and his plays are marked by clarity and simplicity.
  6. Province Town Players. This amateur group set a new course for modern theatre and launched Eugene O'Neill and Susan Glaspell.
  7. Mid century. Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams combined realistic characters with social issues, and realism remained the primary dramatic form through the twentieth century.

Conclusion. Realism transformed American drama from melodrama into a believable mirror of social life, dominating the stage from the late nineteenth century onward.

"The Snows of Kilimanjaro" as a Story of Life and Death

Question: Discuss "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" as a story about life and death.

Answer. "Close to the western summit there is the dried and frozen carcass of a leopard."

  1. The situation. Harry, a writer, lies dying of gangrene on safari in Africa with his wife Helen, awaiting a rescue plane.
  2. Reviewing life. He realises he wasted his talent through procrastination and through the luxury of a loveless marriage to a wealthy woman.
  3. Artistic failure. His failure to achieve artistic success is a main theme. He became what he despised.
  4. Decay imagery. His regrets eat at him as the gangrene eats his leg: "Rot and poetry. Rotten poetry."
  5. The dream flight. When death comes it is transcendent rather than lingering. He hallucinates the plane carrying him to the snow covered summit of Kilimanjaro, the House of God.
  6. The leopard. The frozen leopard of the epigraph suggests that in death Harry finds release and the purity he always sought.

Conclusion. Hemingway weaves life and death together so that Harry's physical decay becomes the path to a final, transcendent vision of artistic creation.

All My Sons as a Modern Tragedy

Question: Give a critical justification with respect to the title of the play All My Sons, treating it as a modern tragedy.

Answer. "Sure, he was my son, but I think to him they were all my sons. And I guess they were."

  1. The partners. Joe Keller and Steve Deever manufacture cylinder heads for aircraft and receive an urgent army contract during World War II.
  2. The fault. The cylinder heads carried hairline cracks. Keller assured Deever he would take responsibility but did not go to the factory.
  3. The consequence. The defective parts caused twenty one planes to crash, killing their pilots.
  4. The trial. Keller denied responsibility and was exonerated, while the blame shifted to Deever, who was imprisoned.
  5. The motive. Keller pursues the American Dream and ships the faulty parts to save his business and his family from ruin.
  6. Larry's letter. The letter reveals that Larry could not live with the shame of his father's involvement and took his own life.
  7. The awakening. Confronted with the truth, Keller realises that the dead pilots were, to Larry, all his sons.
  8. Self punishment. Unable to bear the estrangement from Chris and the weight of his guilt, Keller shoots himself at the end of the play.
  9. Moral meaning of the title. The title marks Keller's awakening that his responsibility extends beyond his family to all the young men who died.
  10. A web of denial. Denial by Keller, Kate, Ann and the neighbours deepens the tragedy until the truth destroys the family.

Conclusion. The play is a modern tragedy because its chief character is created as tragic and his actions lead to several tragic consequences. The title fittingly names his final, fatal recognition that all the pilots were his sons.

BEGC 105 American Literature Blocks and Units Covered in This Paper

The official BEGC 105 syllabus runs to 4 blocks and 16 units, and the guess paper draws questions from every one of the four blocks.

The unit names below match the Self Learning Material hosted on IGNOU's own repository. You can cross check them on the official eGyanKosh collection for BEGC 105. We list them here because most students revise from a photocopied bundle with no contents page and have no idea that Block 3 alone holds three separate short stories.

Block wise and unit wise structure of the IGNOU BEGC 105 American Literature syllabus, with the number of guess paper questions drawn from each block.
BlockBlock titleUnits inside the blockQuestions in this guess paper
Block 1Arthur Miller: All My SonsUnit 1 American Drama: An Introduction; Unit 2 All My Sons: A Detailed Study; Unit 3 Thematic Concerns in All My Sons; Unit 4 All My Sons: Characterisation4 questions (Q5, Q7, Q10 and Q12), covering realism, social responsibility and the tragic title
Block 2Nathaniel Hawthorne: The Scarlet LetterUnit 1 A Socio Cultural Background; Unit 2 Characterization; Unit 3 Themes and Their Expression Through Imagery; Unit 4 Structure, Narrative Style and Special Features2 questions (Q6 and Q11), covering Hester Prynne as symbol and rebel, and the Puritan theocracy behind the novel
Block 3Short FictionUnit 1 Short Fiction: An Introduction; Unit 2 O' Henry: After Twenty Years; Unit 3 Willa Cather: On the Gull's Road; Unit 4 Ernest Hemingway: The Snows of Kilimanjaro2 questions (Q8 and Q9), covering Hemingway's treatment of death and the growth of the American short story from Poe onward
Block 4American Poetry: An IntroductionUnit 1 Ralph Waldo Emerson; Unit 2 Walt Whitman; Unit 3 Emily Dickinson; Unit 4 Sherman Alexie5 questions (Q1 to Q4 and Q13), covering four prescribed stanzas for Section A plus the full Dickinson essay

One honest note on Block 4. The Sherman Alexie unit, which prescribes "Crow Testament" and "Evolution", is deliberately not answered in this file because those poems have not been examined in the five sessions we studied. If your regional centre has flagged them, prepare them separately from your BEGC 105 Study Material rather than relying on this paper alone.

How We Built This BEGC 105 Solved Guess Paper From Past Papers

We read five term end question papers, June 2023, December 2023, December 2024, June 2025 and December 2025, tallied every topic that repeated, then wrote answers only for the topics that survived that filter.

The method is unglamorous and it is the reason the file is only 13 questions long. First we transcribed all five papers question by question. Then we built a grid of 24 recurring topics and marked which session each one appeared in. Anything appearing four or five times was tagged HIGH. Two or three appearances became MEDIUM. Single appearances were dropped or kept only as a backup note.

Only then did the writing start, and every answer was drafted against the IGNOU Self Learning Material rather than from memory, which is why the dates, the critic names and the quoted lines match what your evaluator has in front of them. If you would like to run the same exercise yourself, the raw papers are on our IGNOU Previous Year Question Paper archive.

Sheetal Kirola, our Academic Head, holds an M.Ed. and reviewed every answer for factual accuracy and word length before the file went out. Where a topic sits in a grey zone, we say so on the page rather than quietly inflating the promise.

BEGC 105 American Literature Exam Pattern and Marks Distribution

The BEGC 105 term end paper carries 100 marks over 3 hours and is divided into Section A worth 20 marks, Section B worth 40 marks and Section C worth 40 marks.

Section wise marks distribution, question count and recommended word length for the BEGC 105 American Literature term end examination.
SectionQuestion typeAttemptMarksWord target per answer
Section AExplain stanzas with reference to the context, drawn from the prescribed poemsAny four of the given stanzas, or two at ten marks each4 × 5 = 20About 150 words
Section BShort critical notes on themes, characters and literary movementsAny four questions from the choices given4 × 10 = 40About 250 to 300 words
Section CLong essay questions demanding argument, evidence and structureAny two questions from the choices given2 × 20 = 40About 450 to 500 words

All three sections are compulsory but each offers internal choice, so attempt exactly the required number and no more. Extra answers cost you time and earn nothing. Please confirm the current pattern on your hall ticket, since IGNOU occasionally adjusts internal choice from one session to the next.

Repeat Topic Frequency Analysis for BEGC 105 American Literature

Across the five sessions we studied, four topics appeared in every single paper, and those four alone can carry roughly 30 marks if you write them well.

The full grid inside the PDF tracks 24 topics against five sessions. Here is the top slice of it, which is the part that decides where your first three days of revision should go.

Who Should Buy the BEGC 105 American Literature Guess Paper

This paper suits a BAEGH Semester III student with two to four weeks left who has read the texts at least once but cannot decide what to revise.

It also works for a re appear candidate who cleared everything except American Literature and does not want to reread sixteen units. And it works for a working student who gets ninety minutes a day and needs those minutes pointed at the right pages. Backup candidates who want to write something respectable in every section find the word targets particularly useful. Most of them end up taking the whole semester bundle from our BAEGH Guess Paper shelf rather than one code at a time.

It is a poor fit if you have not opened the play or the novel at all, because no guess paper can substitute for knowing who Chris Keller is. It is also a poor fit if you are hunting for assignment answers, since assignment questions differ from term end questions every session. What the BEGC 105 Solved Guess Paper does well is compress five sessions of examiner behaviour into one revision plan.

BEGC 105 American Literature Guess Paper: Frequently Asked Questions

Is the BEGC 105 Solved Guess Paper valid for both the June 2026 and December 2026 exams?

Yes. The file has been prepared for both 2026 term end sessions of BEGC 105 American Literature. The topic selection rests on repeat behaviour across five past papers rather than on any single session, so the same 13 questions remain relevant for June and December. If IGNOU revises the BEGC 105 syllabus before December, we update the file and resend it to buyers on the same WhatsApp thread.

How many questions does the BEGC 105 American Literature guess paper contain?

The file contains 13 questions with complete answers across 14 pages. Five of those answers are published on this page as samples, so 8 answers remain inside the paid file. The split is 4 questions of 5 marks, 5 questions of 10 marks and 4 questions of 20 marks, which matches the Section A, B and C structure of the BEGC 105 paper.

Are the BEGC 105 American Literature answers written from the IGNOU book?

Yes. Every answer is drafted against the IGNOU Self Learning Material for BEGC 105, so the author names, dates, critical quotations and definitions match what your evaluator expects to see. We do not paraphrase from general internet sources. Sheetal Kirola, our Academic Head, reviews each answer for factual accuracy and for the word length appropriate to its mark band.

Which blocks of BEGC 105 American Literature does the guess paper cover?

All four blocks are covered. Block 1 is Arthur Miller's All My Sons, Block 2 is Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, Block 3 is American short fiction and Block 4 is American poetry. Five questions come from Block 4 alone, because the Section A stanza questions are drawn from the prescribed poems by Whitman, Emerson and Dickinson every session without exception.

Can I pass BEGC 105 American Literature by studying only this guess paper?

It gives you a strong, evidence based revision plan, but honesty matters more than a sales line here. Students who have read All My Sons and The Scarlet Letter at least once and then revise this file thoroughly are generally well placed. Students who have never opened the prescribed texts will struggle with any unseen question, because BEGC 105 rewards analysis rather than recall.

How is the BEGC 105 American Literature guess paper delivered after payment?

Delivery is on WhatsApp as a PDF. Message 9899436384 with your course code and session, confirm the price, complete the payment, and the 14 page file arrives in the same chat, usually within minutes during working hours. There is no login, no download portal and no waiting for courier. You can read it on a phone or forward it to a printer.

Are Sherman Alexie's poems included in the BEGC 105 American Literature guess paper?

No, and that is a deliberate choice. "Crow Testament" and "Evolution" from Block 4 Unit 4 did not appear in any of the five sessions we analysed, so answering them would have padded the file without improving your odds. If your study centre has specifically flagged Alexie for your session, prepare those two poems separately from your official BEGC 105 study material.

What is the difference between the BEGC 105 guess paper and a previous year question paper?

A previous year paper shows you what was asked in one past session and carries no answers. This guess paper reads five sessions together, identifies which topics repeat, and supplies model answers written to the correct word length for each mark band. Use both: the past papers for timing practice, and this file for the actual content you will write in the hall.
