(क) पुश्तैनी पेशा, अनाज भूनने में क्या रखा है? कनस्तर में अनाज भुनवाने लोग आते नहीं। मकई की रोटी अशराफ लोग खाते नहीं। दाल इतनी महँगी है कि लोग चने की दाल बनाएँगे कि कनस्तर में चना भुनाकर सत्तू बनवाएँगे। उस पर भी इतनी मेहनत गाँव के बगीचों, बँसवाड़ियों में सूखे पत्ते बटोरकर जमा करो, उसे जलाकर अनाज भूनकर पेट की आग ठंडा करो।
(ख) पाँच-छह दिन तक जियाराम ने पेटभर भोजन नहीं किया। कभी दो-चार कौर खा लेता, कह देता भूख नहीं। उसके चेहरे का रंग उड़ा रहता था। रातें जागते कटतीं, प्रतिक्षण थानेदार की शंका बनी रहती थी। यदि वह जानता कि मामला इतना तूल खींचेगा तो कभी ऐसा काम न करता। उसने तो समझा था: किसी चोर पर शुबहा होगा।
(ग) मुझे इसकी चिंता नहीं है, सम्राट! गर्व मेरे अंत:करण का अधिकार है। वह राजा से अनुशासित नहीं है। किंतु मैं स्पष्ट कह देना चाहता हूँ कि चाणक्य के गर्व की चिंगारी स्वर्ग के राज्य को प्राप्त करके भी लपट नहीं बनेगी। हाँ, अपमान के हल्के झोंके से ही वह दावाग्नि बनकर तुम्हारे वैभव के नंदन वन को क्षणभर में भस्म कर सकती है। क्या तुम नंद वंश के विनाश की पुनरावृत्ति देखना चाहते हो?
(घ) भयानक समस्या है। मूर्खों ने स्वार्थ के लिए साम्राज्य के गौरव का सर्वनाश करने का निश्चय कर लिया है! सच है, वीरता जब भागती है, तब उसके पैरों से राजनीतिक छल-छंद की धूल उड़ती है। कुमार चंद्रगुप्त को यह सब समाचार शीघ्र ही मिलना चाहिए। गूँगी के अभिनय में महादेवी के हृदय का आवरण तनिक-सा हटा है, किंतु वह थोड़ा-सा स्निग्ध भाव भी कुमार के लिए कम महत्व नहीं रखता।
