The paper holds eight questions, four in each Section. You answer any five, with at least two from each Section, and every question carries 20 marks. About IGNOU BHIE-142 History of Modern East Asia Japan

BHIE-142 is the modern-Japan elective offered across the IGNOU B.A. History (BAG and BAHIH) programmes. It studies Japan from about 1868 to 1945, opening with the fall of the Tokugawa order and the Meiji Restoration that pulled the country into rapid modernisation.

The course then traces how Japan built infrastructure and a modern economy, framed the Meiji Constitution, and educated a new generation. It moves on to the wars with China and Russia, colonial expansion across East Asia, the rise of the zaibatsu and the inter-war economy, the turn to military authoritarianism, and finally the political and economic consequences of the Allied occupation.

This page was prepared by Prateek Talwar and reviewed by the Unnati Educations academic team with History and modern-Asia content reviewers. It is anchored to the IGNOU Term-End Examination, December 2025. Last updated June 2026.

How the BHIE-142 Paper Is Split into Section A and Section B

The split is not random, and knowing it helps you plan. Section A clusters around the Meiji and modernisation era: the Restoration itself, protests against the Meiji State, infrastructure and the economy, and short notes on the Daimyo, proto-industrialisation, educational reforms and the Meiji Constitution.

Section B shifts to the war, colonial and occupation phase: Japan's wars with Russia and China, colonial expansion, the implications of the Allied occupation, and notes on inter-war foreign trade, military authoritarianism, the zaibatsu and the INA. Because you must take at least two from each, don't over-prepare one era. A safe plan is two strong Meiji answers and two strong twentieth-century ones, with a fifth from whichever side you know best.

Key Terms in the BHIE-142 Paper Explained

Meiji Restoration: the 1868 transfer of power from the Tokugawa shogunate back to the emperor, which launched Japan's rapid modernisation and centralisation.

Daimyo: the powerful feudal lords of Tokugawa Japan whose domains and autonomy were dismantled during the Meiji reforms.

Proto-industrialisation: the early, pre-factory growth of rural manufacturing and commerce that prepared the ground for full industrialisation.

Zaibatsu: the large family-controlled business conglomerates, such as Mitsui and Mitsubishi, that dominated Japan's modern economy.

Military Authoritarianism: the inter-war and wartime dominance of the armed forces over Japan's civilian government and policy.

INA: the Indian National Army, which operated alongside Japanese military authorities in South-East Asia during the Second World War.

How to Use BHIE-142 December 2025 Question Paper to Score in the 2026 Exam

Sit this under real conditions: a 3 hour clock, five answers, and the at-least-two-per-section rule firmly in mind. Decide your five before you start writing so you don't run short of options in either era.

History answers here reward chronology and cause-and-effect, not adjectives. For the Meiji Restoration, trace the chain from the 1853 arrival of Perry through the fall of the shogunate to 1868, with dates anchoring each turn. For Japan's wars with Russia and China, link the victories to their social impact, rising nationalism, militarisation and great-power status. Most students notice that a tight argument backed by a treaty or a date scores far higher than a general account. The IGNOU December 2025 TEE gives steady weight to the Meiji era, the wars and the occupation, so balance those across the two sections.

Sample Answer Approach (not a full answer)

Take Q1, the process leading to the Meiji Restoration from 1853 to 1868. Here is the shape of a 20-mark, 400-word answer, not the answer itself.

Context: open by setting the late-Tokugawa crisis and the shock of Western intrusion.

Points to cover: Commodore Perry's arrival in 1853 and the unequal treaties, the loss of shogunal authority, the rallying cry of "revere the emperor, expel the barbarian", the role of the Satsuma and Choshu domains, and the 1868 restoration of imperial rule.

Worked example: use the Treaty of Kanagawa or the Boshin War as your concrete anchor.

Conclusion: a short analytical line on why the Restoration became the gateway to modernisation.

Four or five dated stages with one anchoring example is what earns the full twenty.
