(क) अभिमानी मनुष्य को कृतघ्नता से जितना दु:ख होता है, उतना और किसी बात से नहीं होता। वह चाहे अपने उपकारों के लिए कृतज्ञता का भूखा न हो, चाहे उसने नेकी करके दरिया में ही डाल दी हो; पर उपकार का विचार करके उसको अत्यन्त गौरव का आनन्द प्राप्त होता है। उमानाथ ने सोचा, संसार कितना कुटिल है। मैं इनके लिए महीनों कचहरी, दरबार के चक्कर लगाता रहा, वकीलों की कैसी-कैसी खुशामद की, कर्मचारियों के कैसे-कैसे नखरे सहे, निज का सैकड़ों रुपया फूंक दिया, उसका यह यश मिल रहा है।
(ख) निस्संदेह कला का उद्देश्य सौन्दर्य वृत्ति की पुष्टि करना है और वह हमारे आध्यात्मिक आनन्द की कुंजी है, पर ऐसा कोई रुचिगत मानसिक तथा आध्यात्मिक आनन्द नहीं, जो अपनी उपयोगिता का पहलू न रखता हो। आनन्द स्वतः एक उपयोगितायुक्त वस्तु है और उपयोगिता की दृष्टि से एक ही वस्तु से हमें सुख भी होता है और दु:ख भी। आसमान पर छायी लालिमा निस्संदेह बड़ा सुन्दर दृश्य है, परन्तु आषाढ़ में अगर आकाश पर वैसी लालिमा छा जाय, तो वह हमें प्रसन्नता देने वाली नहीं हो सकती।
(ग) संध्या समय एक पेड़ के नीचे पंचायत बैठी। शेख जुम्मन ने पहले से ही फर्श बिछा रखा था। उन्होंने पान, इलायची, हुक्के-तम्बाकू आदि का प्रबन्ध भी किया था। हाँ, वह स्वयं अलबत्त अलगू चौधरी के साथ जरा दूर पर बैठे हुए थे। जब पंचायत में कोई आ जाता था, तब दबे हुए सलाम से उसका स्वागत करते थे। जब सूर्य अस्त हो गया और चिड़ियों की कलरवयुक्त पंचायत पेड़ों पर बैठी, तब यहाँ भी पंचायत शुरू हुई। फर्श की एक-एक अंगुल जमीन भर गई; पर अधिकांश दर्शक ही थे। निमन्त्रित महाशयों में से केवल वे ही लोग पधारे थे, जिन्हें जुम्मन से अपनी कुछ कसर निकालनी थी।
(घ) लड़कों के लिए यहाँ कोई आकर्षण न था। वे सब आगे बढ़ जाते हैं, हामिद लोहे की दुकान पर रुक जाता है। कई चिमटे रखे हुए थे। उसे ख्याल आया, दादी के पास चिमटा नहीं है। तवे से रोटियाँ उतारती हैं, तो हाथ जल जाता है; अगर वह चिमटा ले जाकर दादी को दे दे तो वह कितना प्रसन्न होंगी! फिर उनकी उंगलियाँ कभी न जलेंगी। घर में एक काम की चीज हो जाएगी। खिलौने से क्या फायदा ? व्यर्थ में पैसे खराब होते हैं। जरा देर ही तो खुशी होती है। फिर तो खिलौने को कोई आँख उठाकर नहीं देखता।
