BCS 053 Solved Guess Paper 2026 is a 12-question answer file for IGNOU's Web Programming course, written for BCA students sitting the December 2026 term-end exam. Each answer follows the IGNOU block text, fits the word limit for its marks and pairs the theory with the small code fragment examiners expect to see.
BCS-053 Web Programming is the Semester V course of IGNOU's Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA / BCA_NEW / BCA_NEWOL) that teaches client-side technologies such as HTML5, CSS, XML, JavaScript and WML in Block 1, and server-side development with JSP and JDBC in Block 2. The same paper tests both halves, which is why a focused answer set saves so much time.
1. What the BCS 053 Guess Paper Covers
The BCS 053 guess paper holds 12 solved questions: one 20-mark compulsory question and eleven 10-mark questions, split across Block 1 (Client Side) and Block 2 (Server Side).
We did not start with a topic list. We started with the papers. Six IGNOU term-end papers, from June 2023 to December 2025, were broken into sub-questions, and each sub-question was tagged to its block and unit. Topics that turned up in five or six of those papers became full answers; one-time topics were kept as short notes.
The result is a file that reads the way the exam is set. Q1 mirrors the compulsory question, with four short parts on CSS, XML, the DOM and HTTP methods. Q2 to Q11 are two-part, 5 + 5 mark questions, and Q12 is the "explain any four" short-notes question that IGNOU tends to place last.
BCS 053 sits inside our wider IGNOU Solved Guess Paper collection, but this file was written only for Web Programming. Nothing here is recycled from another course code, and every definition is quoted in the wording the IGNOU block uses, because that wording is what evaluators match against.
2. BCS 053 Solved Guess Paper: 5 Sample Answers
Five complete answers from the BCS 053 file are reproduced below, unedited in structure, so you can judge the depth, the code and the word count before ordering.
Each one carries chips showing its block, its marks and how often the topic has appeared in the six papers we analysed, plus a short note on what makes the answer score.
JSP life cycle and the three JSP directives
Question: (a) What is JSP? Explain the JSP life cycle with the help of its methods. (b) Explain the three types of directives used in a JSP document.
(a) JSP and its life cycle
Java Server Pages (JSP) is a web technology that helps software developers to create dynamic content based web pages.
JSP is an extension of the Java Servlet. When a JSP page is first requested, the container translates it into a servlet, compiles it, and from then on the page serves requests as that servlet.
Three methods control the life cycle:
- jspInit(): called only once, to initialise the objects and variables used for the whole life of the page.
- _jspService(): called on every request; it handles the request and the response and cannot be overridden.
- jspDestroy(): called when the page is taken out of service, for clean-up such as releasing database connections.
(b) The three JSP directives
Directives guide the container while it translates and compiles the page. They are written inside <%@ ... %> and produce no output of their own.
- page: global settings for the page, through attributes such as language, import, buffer, errorPage and isErrorPage.
- include: inserts the content of another static file (HTML or JSP) into the current page at translation time.
- taglib: makes a custom tag library available to the page through a uri and a prefix.
Conclusion: JSP mixes static HTML with dynamic Java; the three life-cycle methods and the three directives are the parts IGNOU asks about most.
Why this answer scores: Name all three methods with their brackets and say when each one runs. The December 2025 paper asked only for the page directive with syntax, so keep one line of syntax per directive ready.
Session management and cookies in JSP
Question: (a) What is session management? Explain the different session tracking methods. (b) What is a cookie? Write the commands to create a cookie named 'txtcookie' and set its life to 5 minutes.
(a) Session management and tracking methods
HTTP is a stateless protocol, so the server keeps no memory of earlier requests. Session management fixes this by recording a user's activity across a series of requests. There are four tracking techniques:
- Cookies: small pieces of information stored in the client browser and sent back with each request.
- URL rewriting: a token is added to the URL as a query parameter and carried from page to page.
- Hidden fields: the token travels as the value of an HTML hidden field inside the submitted form.
- Session objects: the data stays on the server and the browser holds only a unique token that points to it.
(b) Cookies
A cookie is a small piece of information that is sent by the server to the client browser. It is stored at the client machine in the form of a text file.
A cookie is created from the Cookie class with a name and value pair, its life is set in seconds with setMaxAge(), and it is then added to the response. For a cookie named txtcookie that lives for 5 minutes:
Cookie c = new Cookie("txtcookie", "value");
c.setMaxAge(5 * 60); // 5 minutes = 300 seconds
response.addCookie(c);
Conclusion: cookies live on the client while session objects live on the server; both keep state across the stateless HTTP protocol.
Why this answer scores: Set the age before calling addCookie(). Many answer books write it the other way round, and a sharp evaluator will notice. The December 2023 paper asked exactly this create-and-set-life question.
JDBC connection steps and the four driver types
Question: (a) Explain the steps involved in connecting to a database using JDBC. (b) Explain the four types of JDBC drivers.
(a) Connection steps using JDBC
A Java API (Application Programming Interface) that enables a JSP program to execute SQL statements is called JDBC.
Five steps are followed:
- Load a JDBC driver with
Class.forName(drivername). - Create a connection with
DriverManager.getConnection(dbURL), which returns a Connection object. - Create a statement:
Statement stmt = con.createStatement(); - Process the results:
ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery(query);and read the rows withnext(). - Close the connection by calling
close()on the ResultSet, the Statement and the Connection.
(b) Four types of JDBC drivers
- Type 1, JDBC-ODBC bridge: turns JDBC calls into ODBC calls; the ODBC driver must be configured on the client.
- Type 2, native-API, partly Java: turns JDBC calls into DBMS-specific native calls; binary code is needed on each client.
- Type 3, JDBC-Net, pure Java: works through a middle-tier server and a network protocol; suited to Internet applications.
- Type 4, native-protocol, pure Java: converts JDBC calls straight into the vendor's database protocol; platform independent and the fastest.
Conclusion: JDBC follows five fixed steps and offers four driver types; Type 1 suits prototyping while Type 4 gives the best performance.
Why this answer scores: Write each step with its method call. The June 2023 paper gave a Programme table and a ready statement object and asked for the code fragment, so practise one executeQuery() loop that prints two columns.
WAP protocol stack, WML decks and cards
Question: (a) What is WAP? Explain the WAP protocol stack. (b) What is WML? Explain WML decks and cards, and list its navigational elements.
(a) WAP and its protocol stack
WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) is simply a communication protocol by which a wireless device talks to a server installed in a wireless network.
The WAP stack borrows most of its ideas from the ISO-OSI reference model and has five layers:
- Application layer (WAE): the Wireless Application Environment, holding WML and WMLScript.
- Session layer (WSP): an organised exchange of content between client and server.
- Transport layer (WTP): reliable delivery of data packets over the wireless medium.
- Security layer (WTLS): an optional layer based on SSL for privacy and authentication.
- Network layer (WDP): the bottom datagram layer that shields the upper layers from bearer services.
(b) WML, decks and cards
WML is the markup language defined in the WAP specification. WML is an application of XML.
A single WML screen is called a card, and related cards sit together in one file called a deck. The key difference from HTML is the unit of navigation: HTML moves page by page, WML moves card by card. The navigational elements are <do>, <a>, <anchor> and <go>.
Conclusion: WAP reaches wireless devices through a five-layer stack, and WML, an XML application, arranges content as cards inside decks.
Why this answer scores: Draw the five layers as a stack, top to bottom, with the short forms in brackets. WAP or WML has appeared in every one of the six papers, so this answer is close to a sure question.
Validating XML with DTD and XML Schema
Question: (a) What is DTD? Explain its role in XML and its two ways of declaration. (b) What is XML Schema? How is it different from a DTD?
(a) Document Type Definition (DTD)
A Document Type Definition (DTD) defines the legal building blocks of an XML document. It defines the document structure with a list of elements and attributes.
When a DTD is supplied, the parser checks the document against its rules and raises an error, showing where processing failed, if the document does not conform. A DTD can be declared in two ways:
- Internal: written inside the document, as
<!DOCTYPE root-element [ element-declarations ]> - External: kept in a separate file, as
<!DOCTYPE root-element SYSTEM "filename">
(b) XML Schema (XSD)
XML Schema is described as the successor to DTD.
Also called XML Schema Definition (XSD), it describes the structure of an XML document but is more powerful because it has a rich data-typing system and is itself written in XML. Common built-in types are xs:string, xs:decimal, xs:integer, xs:boolean, xs:date and xs:time.
| Point | DTD | XML Schema (XSD) |
|---|---|---|
| Syntax | Not written in XML | Written in XML |
| Data types | No data-type support | Rich types such as string, integer and date |
| Standing | Older and less powerful | Successor to DTD, more flexible |
Conclusion: both DTD and XSD validate XML structure, but XSD is the XML-based successor with strong data typing.
Why this answer scores: Give one line of each declaration syntax and close with the three-row table. In June 2023, IGNOU asked students to write the DTD for an XML document they had just created, so be ready to write one.
That is 5 of the 12 answers. The other 7, including the 20-mark compulsory Q1 and the short-notes question, are in the full file and listed further down.
3. All 12 BCS 053 Questions in the File
The BCS 053 file has 12 questions in total: 5 are shown as samples on this page and the remaining 7 are only in the full PDF.
| File question | Topic | Marks | What the answer covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 (compulsory) | Web fundamentals: CSS, XML, DOM and HTTP methods | 20 | Three CSS types with a no-repeat background-image rule, XML's edge over HTML, DOM node types and node tree, GET vs POST |
| Q5 | 3-tier and MVC architecture | 10 | Roles of presentation, application logic and data layers, why n-tier is more secure, Model, View and Controller duties |
| Q8 | JSP implicit objects and scripting elements | 10 | All nine implicit objects named, request, response, session and out explained, declaration, expression and scriptlet tags |
| Q9 | Web 2.0 technologies and HTML vs XHTML | 10 | RIA, mashups, web services with their three roles, widgets, and a row-by-row HTML vs XHTML syntax table |
| Q10 | DOM access methods and AJAX | 10 | getElementById, getElementsByTagName, getElementsByClassName, innerHTML, and an AJAX vs JavaScript table |
| Q11 | Deployment descriptor and server-side scripting | 10 | web.xml under WEB-INF, the error-page fragment for Error 404, server-side vs client-side scripting |
| Q12 | Short notes, any four | 10 | CSS box model, MIME types, web container, safe methods, with XML namespaces listed as the fifth option |
The five samples above are file questions Q2, Q3, Q4, Q6 and Q7, so 5 shown plus 7 listed here makes the full set of 12. Q1 is the one most students want first, because 20 of the 50 marks ride on it.
4. BCS 053 Exam Pattern for December 2026
BCS 053 is a 2-hour, 50-mark paper: Question 1 is compulsory and carries 20 marks, and you attempt any three of Questions 2 to 5 at 10 marks each.
This is taken from the instructions printed on the IGNOU December 2025 BCS-053 question paper, which also lists the theory weightage as 70 percent; older papers printed 75 percent. The structure itself has stayed steady for years.
| Element | What the paper says | How the guess paper prepares you |
|---|---|---|
| Time allowed | 2 hours | Every answer is sized so four answers fit comfortably |
| Maximum marks | 50 | Q1 alone is 40 percent of the paper, so it gets the longest answer |
| Question 1 | Compulsory, 20 marks, several short parts | File Q1 solves four linked parts in about 450 words |
| Questions 2 to 5 | Attempt any three, 10 marks each | Eleven 10-mark answers give you more choice than the paper does |
| Last question | Often 'explain any four' short notes | Q12 gives four ready notes of about 150 words together |
| Style of parts | Theory plus small code fragments | JSP, JDBC, cookie and web.xml code is written out in full |
5. BCS 053 Topic Frequency (Six Papers)
Across six BCS 053 papers, XML, WAP and WML, JSP directives and HTML5 forms appeared every single time, while MIME, XML namespaces and the CSS box model appeared only once.
The grid below is the one printed in the file. We have shown the raw count next to each topic and set the priority strictly by that count: HIGH for four or more papers, MEDIUM for two or three, LOW for one. If you want to see the original papers yourself, our IGNOU Previous Year Question Paper section keeps them in one place.
| Topic | Jun 2023 | Dec 2023 | Jun 2024 | Dec 2024 | Jun 2025 | Dec 2025 | Papers | Priority | Guess paper question |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| XML namespaces | — | — | — | — | Yes | — | 1 | LOW | Q12 option |
| CSS box model | — | Yes | — | — | — | — | 1 | LOW | Q12 |
One honest note: HTML5 forms came up in all six papers, yet the file treats them through its exam-pattern notes rather than a full model answer. If form-building is your weak spot, practise one form question from a past paper, using select, radio, checkbox and details or summary tags.
6. BCS 053 Blocks and Units
BCS 053 Web Programming has 2 blocks and 9 units: five client-side units in Block 1 and four server-side units in Block 2.
The unit list below follows the course as published on eGyanKosh, IGNOU's official repository for BCS-053. The last column shows where each unit is answered in the guess paper, so you can see there is no unit left without cover.
| Block | Unit | Unit title | Exam topics inside the unit | Guess paper question |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Block 1: Client Side | Unit 1 | Web 2.0 and XHTML/HTML5 | Web 1.0 vs Web 2.0, blogging, RIA, mashups, HTML5 form tags, details and summary | Q9 |
| Block 1: Client Side | Unit 2 | Style Sheets | Inline, embedded and external CSS, class selector, box model, div vs span | Q1(a), Q12(a) |
| Block 1: Client Side | Unit 3 | Introduction to XML | Need for XML, well-formed documents, DTD, XML Schema, namespaces | Q1(b), Q7, Q12(e) |
| Block 1: Client Side | Unit 4 | JavaScript, DOM and AJAX | DOM node tree, getElementById, events, changing styles, AJAX vs JavaScript | Q1(c), Q10 |
| Block 1: Client Side | Unit 5 | Introduction to WAP and WML | WAP stack, decks and cards, select element, navigation elements | Q6 |
| Block 2: Server Side | Unit 1 | The Server Side Scripting | Static vs dynamic pages, 2-tier, 3-tier and MVC, GET and POST, safe methods, web container | Q1(d), Q5, Q11(b), Q12 |
| Block 2: Server Side | Unit 2 | JSP Basic | JSP life cycle, directives, declarations, expressions, scriptlets, static vs dynamic include | Q2, Q8(b) |
| Block 2: Server Side | Unit 3 | JSP Applications | Implicit objects, compile-time and request-time errors, cookies, URL rewriting, hidden fields | Q3, Q8(a) |
| Block 2: Server Side | Unit 4 | JSP Application Deployment | Role of JDBC, DriverManager, four driver types, web.xml deployment descriptor | Q4, Q11(a) |
If you have not opened the blocks yet, start with Block 2, Unit 2. It carries the JSP basics that feed three different questions, and our BCS 053 Study Material follows the same unit order if you want fuller notes before using the guess paper.
7. BCS 053 Practical File Index (BCSL-057)
BCS 053 theory is supported by the BCSL-057 Web Programming Lab, and our practical file covers the 11 exercises listed below, each tied to a BCS 053 unit.
The lab and the theory paper overlap more than most students expect. The same HTML form, the same WML card and the same JDBC query that you practise for the lab are asked as code fragments in the BCS 053 term-end paper, so working through the practical file doubles as revision.
| Practical | Exercise | Linked unit | Skill it builds |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Registration form with text, select, radio and checkbox inputs | Block 1, Unit 1 | HTML5 form elements and a submit button |
| 2 | Two-column page layout with div, span and an external style sheet | Block 1, Unit 2 | Linking a .css file and using class selectors |
| 3 | Styled results table using margin, border and padding | Block 1, Unit 2 | Applying the CSS box model |
| 4 | Student-record XML document with an internal DTD | Block 1, Unit 3 | Well-formed XML and DTD validation |
| 5 | Book catalogue validated with an XML Schema | Block 1, Unit 3 | xs:string, xs:integer and xs:date types |
| 6 | Button that changes the page background to red | Block 1, Unit 4 | Events and style changes in JavaScript |
| 7 | Login form validation using getElementById | Block 1, Unit 4 | Reading and checking field values |
| 8 | WML deck with two cards and a selection list | Block 1, Unit 5 | card, select, option and go elements |
| 9 | JSP page printing 11 to 15 in a loop with the current date | Block 2, Unit 2 | Scriptlets and expressions |
| 10 | Visit counter using cookies and a session object | Block 2, Unit 3 | Session tracking in JSP |
| 11 | JSP page listing records from a database table, plus a 404 error page | Block 2, Unit 4 | JDBC steps and the web.xml error-page element |
The practical file is a separate product from the guess paper. Ask for it in the same WhatsApp message if you need both, and mention your programme code so we send the right version.
8. 10-Day BCS 053 Revision Plan
Ten days are enough for BCS 053 if you learn one high-frequency topic a day and spend the last two days on timed practice.
| Day | Focus | Guess paper question | Target by evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | XML, DTD and XSD | Q7, Q1(b) | Write one internal and one external DTD from memory |
| Day 2 | WAP stack, WML decks and cards | Q6 | Draw the five-layer stack and a two-card deck |
| Day 3 | JSP life cycle and directives | Q2 | List three methods and three directives with syntax |
| Day 4 | Implicit objects and scripting elements | Q8 | Name all nine objects without looking |
| Day 5 | Sessions, cookies, URL rewriting | Q3 | Write the txtcookie code in the correct order |
| Day 6 | JDBC steps and drivers | Q4 | Write a full executeQuery() loop for a sample table |
| Day 7 | CSS, DOM and AJAX | Q1(a), Q1(c), Q10 | Code a no-repeat background and one getElementById call |
| Day 8 | Architecture, web.xml, scripting types | Q5, Q11 | Draw MVC and write the Error 404 fragment |
| Day 9 | Web 2.0, HTML vs XHTML, short notes | Q9, Q12 | Prepare four short notes of about 40 words each |
| Day 10 | Timed mock | Q1 plus any three | Finish four answers inside two hours |
Most Semester V students carry more than one paper at a time. If the rest of your term-end list needs the same treatment, our BCA Guess Paper set follows this format for the other BCA courses.

10. BCS 053 Web Programming FAQs
Quick answers to the questions BCS 053 students ask most before ordering.
What does the BCS 053 guess paper include?
The BCS 053 guess paper includes 12 solved questions: one 20-mark compulsory question on CSS, XML, the DOM and HTTP methods, ten two-part 10-mark questions on topics such as JSP, JDBC, WAP and XML validation, and one short-notes question. Five complete answers are shown on this page, and the remaining seven come in the full PDF, which you can order on WhatsApp 9899436384.
Which BCS 053 topics are most important for December 2026?
In the six BCS 053 papers from June 2023 to December 2025, four topics appeared every time: XML with DTD and Schema, WAP and WML, JSP directives and scriptlets, and HTML5 forms. MVC architecture, CSS, the DOM, AJAX and GET versus POST each appeared five times. Prepare these first, then sessions, JDBC and the deployment descriptor, which appeared four times each.
What is the exam pattern of IGNOU BCS 053?
IGNOU BCS 053 is a two-hour paper worth 50 marks. Question 1 is compulsory and carries 20 marks, usually split into four or five short parts. You then attempt any three questions from Questions 2 to 5, each worth 10 marks. The last question is often a set of short notes where you explain any four of five given terms, with an example where needed.
Are the BCS 053 answers written from the IGNOU study material?
Yes. Every BCS 053 definition is taken in the wording used in the IGNOU Web Programming blocks, because evaluators check answers against that text. The explanations around each definition are written in simple language, and the code fragments for JSP, JDBC, cookies and web.xml follow the syntax shown in the course units, with one small correction noted for the cookie example.
How many BCS 053 questions can I check before ordering?
You can read five full BCS 053 answers on this page: JSP life cycle and directives, session management and cookies, JDBC steps and drivers, the WAP stack with WML decks, and DTD versus XML Schema. The other seven questions, including the 20-mark compulsory Q1, are only inside the complete solved file.
How do I get the full BCS 053 solved file?
Send the message BCS 053 on WhatsApp to 9899436384. Our team confirms the price and payment details in the chat, and the complete 12-question BCS 053 PDF is shared once payment is received. You can ask for the BCSL-057 practical file in the same message, and any doubt about an answer is handled on that same number.
Will the guess paper questions come exactly in the exam?
No guess paper can promise identical BCS 053 questions, and we do not claim that. What the file does is cover the topics that have repeated across six recent papers, in the form IGNOU usually asks them. Students who learn these answers and practise one or two past papers are prepared for the large majority of what the paper tends to test.
11. Who Prepared the BCS 053 Answers
The BCS 053 answers were written by Prateek Talwar and reviewed for syllabus accuracy by Sheetal Kirola, Academic Head at Unnati Educations.
Prateek Talwar is the founder of Unnati Educations, a Delhi institute that has supported open-learning students since 2008, and leads the team that writes its IGNOU guess papers. Sheetal Kirola (M.Ed.) checked each BCS 053 answer against the course blocks and the six past papers before release.
