BCS 053 Solved Question Paper June 2026 is our expert-written answer file for the official IGNOU Web Programming term-end paper, with all 16 sub-questions answered. Two answers are open on this page, Q1(a) and Q4(b); the other 14 sit in the full file, shared on WhatsApp 9899436384.
1. What the June 2026 Paper Covers
BCS 053 Web Programming is a 2-credit theory course in Semester V of IGNOU's Bachelor of Computer Applications, covering HTML5, CSS, XML, JavaScript and WML on the client side and JSP with JDBC on the server side.
We took the printed paper, which has five main questions and 16 sub-questions, and answered every one of them in the length and format IGNOU examiners expect for 2, 3 and 5 mark parts.
This paper leans hard on code. Nine of the 16 sub-questions ask for a program or a coded example: an HTML5 page, an HTML table with merged cells, CSS for a background colour, an inline style, a JSP loop that sums 1 to 10, jsp:plugin, WML navigation, JSP scripting elements and a Type-1 JDBC page. Theory marks come from JDBC, sessions, the web container and the META tag.
If you are revising from the question paper itself, the gap most students feel is not the theory but the code. Our answers give complete, correctly nested programs with a short explanation of each tag or statement, so you understand why the code works and can rewrite it from memory in the exam hall.
2. Two Answers Solved in Full, Fourteen Held Back
Two BCS 053 answers are shown in full below: Question 1(a) on HTML web page design and Question 4(b) on JSP scripting elements, each worth 5 marks.
Read them as a sample of the whole file. Both follow the same pattern as the other 14 answers: the question exactly as printed, a direct opening line, complete code where the question asks for it, and a short note on what earns the last mark.
Designing a web page with HTML5
Question 1 (a): Design a web page using the following statements. (5)
(i) Header as 'BCS-053'
(ii) Your name as highlighted text
(iii) Create navigation links for 'about us' and 'contact us'
(iv) Date and time within your page
(v) Footer line should be displayed as copyright symbol with 'IGNOU' text
Approach. The page uses HTML5 structural tags so that each of the five statements maps to one clear element. A small internal style sheet colours the header and centres the footer, and one line of JavaScript prints the live date and time.
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="UTF-8">
<title>BCS-053 Web Page</title>
<style>
header { background: #003366; color: #ffffff; text-align: center; padding: 10px; }
nav a { margin-right: 20px; }
footer { text-align: center; border-top: 1px solid #999999; margin-top: 30px; }
</style>
</head>
<body>
<header>
<h1>BCS-053</h1>
</header>
<nav>
<a href="aboutus.html">About Us</a>
<a href="contactus.html">Contact Us</a>
</nav>
<main>
<p>Student Name: <mark>Aman Verma</mark></p>
<p>Current date and time: <span id="today"></span></p>
</main>
<footer>
<p>&copy; IGNOU</p>
</footer>
<script>
document.getElementById("today").innerHTML = new Date().toLocaleString();
</script>
</body>
</html>
How each statement is met
- Header as 'BCS-053': the
<header>element holds an<h1>with the text BCS-053, styled with a dark blue background. - Name as highlighted text: the
<mark>tag highlights the name (yellow by default in every modern browser). Replace Aman Verma with your own name in the exam. - Navigation links: the
<nav>element groups two anchor tags that point to aboutus.html and contactus.html. - Date and time:
new Date()creates the current date object,toLocaleString()formats it, andgetElementById()writes it into the empty<span>. - Copyright footer: the entity
&copy;prints the © symbol, followed by the text IGNOU inside<footer>.
Examiner tip. Write the output in one line under the code (header, highlighted name, two links, current date and time, © IGNOU). A short output note is often the difference between 4 and 5 marks on a design question.
Scripting elements of JSP
Question 4 (b): What are the scripting elements of JSP? Explain with the help of an example. (5)
Scripting elements let a JSP page carry Java code alongside HTML. When the JSP container translates the page into a servlet, each scripting element lands in a different place in that servlet, and that is the main point examiners look for. JSP has three scripting elements.
- Declarations
<%! ... %>declare variables and methods. They become members of the generated servlet class, outside the_jspService()method, so a declared variable keeps its value across requests. XML form:<jsp:declaration>. - Scriptlets
<% ... %>hold ordinary Java statements such as loops and conditions. Their code is placed inside_jspService(), so it runs on every request and can use implicit objects like request and out. XML form:<jsp:scriptlet>. - Expressions
<%= ... %>evaluate one Java expression, convert the result to a String and write it to the output. No semicolon is used. XML form:<jsp:expression>.
Example. The page below uses all three elements together.
<%@ page language="java" contentType="text/html" %>
<html>
<body>
<%-- 1. Declaration: class-level variable and method --%>
<%! int hits = 0;
int square(int n) { return n * n; } %>
<%-- 2. Scriptlet: Java statements run on every request --%>
<% hits++;
for (int i = 1; i <= 3; i++) { %>
<p>Square of <%= i %> is <%= square(i) %></p>
<% } %>
<%-- 3. Expression: value written straight into the page --%>
<p>This page has been opened <%= hits %> times.</p>
</body>
</html>
How it works. The declaration creates hits and the method square() once, at class level. The scriptlet increases hits and runs a loop three times. Inside the loop, expressions print i and square(i), giving the lines "Square of 1 is 1", "Square of 2 is 4" and "Square of 3 is 9". The last expression prints the running count, which rises each time the page is opened because hits is shared by all requests.
Note for full marks. JSP comments <%-- ... --%> are not a scripting element and are never sent to the browser. Mention the difference between declaration (class level) and scriptlet (method level) in one line; it is the part most students miss.
3. Questions Answered Only in the Full File
The remaining 14 sub-questions of the June 2026 paper are listed below exactly as printed. Their answers, including all the HTML, CSS, WML and JSP code, are in the full file only.
Question 1 (b): Write a JSP program that prints a sequence of numbers from 1 to 10. Also find the sum of these numbers. (5)
Question 1 (c): Explain the inline style sheet with an example. (2)
Question 1 (d): Define the role of JDBC in a web application. Why is the DriverManager class needed? (3)
Question 1 (e): What is the purpose of the 'alt' attribute on an image? Also write CSS code for adding any colour as the background of the web page. (5)
Question 2 (a): What are action elements? Define the
<jsp:plugin>action element with an example. (5)Question 2 (b): Create a table like the one printed in the paper using HTML code (a sample table with Header 1, Header 2, three body rows and Footer 1). (5)
Question 3 (a): What is WML? Explain any two of the WML navigational elements with an example. (5)
Question 3 (b): Compare and contrast the following. (5)
(i) Session and Cookie object
(ii) executeQuery() and executeUpdate() methods
Question 4 (a): Design a JSP page to fetch the records of a student having attributes such as ENO, name, date and programme code from any database table using a JDBC Type-1 driver. (5)
Question 5: Explain any four of the following with the help of an example or diagram, if needed. (4 × 2½ = 10)
(a)
<error-page>element in a JSP page
(b) Request implicit object
(c) Web container
(d) Handling of the OnClick event
(e) META tag in HTML
4. Syllabus Block by Block
The BCS 053 syllabus has two blocks: Block 1 Client Side with five units and Block 2 Server Side with four units, and the June 2026 paper draws from all nine.
The unit list below follows the self-learning material published for the course. You can open each unit on the BCS-053 course page on eGyanKosh, which is filed under the archived BCA Revised Semester V listing.
| Block | Unit | Key topics examined |
|---|---|---|
| Block 1: Client Side | Unit 1: Web 2.0 and XHTML/HTML5 | Web 2.0 technologies such as blogging, mashups and web services; HTML5 structural tags; forms and tables |
| Block 1: Client Side | Unit 2: Style Sheets | CSS rule format; inline, embedded and external style sheets; class selectors, the box model, div and span |
| Block 1: Client Side | Unit 3: Introduction to XML | Need for XML over HTML; DTD and XML schema; namespaces and XSLT |
| Block 1: Client Side | Unit 4: Programming with JavaScript: DOM and Events | HTML DOM node tree; getElementById(); event handling such as onclick |
| Block 1: Client Side | Unit 5: Introduction to WAP and WML | WAP model and protocol stack; WML cards and decks; select, input and navigation elements |
| Block 2: Server Side | Unit 1: The Server Side Scripting | Static versus dynamic pages; 2-tier, 3-tier and MVC architecture; GET, POST and the web container |
| Block 2: Server Side | Unit 2: JSP: Basic | JSP life cycle; page, include and taglib directives; scripting elements and action elements |
| Block 2: Server Side | Unit 3: JSP: Applications | Compile-time and request-time errors; session management; cookies, URL rewriting and hidden fields |
| Block 2: Server Side | Unit 4: JSP: Application Deployment | Role of JDBC; the DriverManager class; JDBC-ODBC bridge (Type-1) and deployment descriptor |
Block 2 carries more of this paper than Block 1: JSP action elements, scripting elements, sessions and JDBC together account for most of Questions 2 to 4. If you are reading the BCS 053 Study Material unit by unit, give Units 2 and 4 of Block 2 the most time.
5. How the Question Paper Is Set and Marked
The BCS 053 paper carries 50 marks in 2 hours: Question 1 is compulsory for 20 marks, and you attempt any three of Questions 2 to 5 for 10 marks each.
| Question | Structure | Marks | What June 2026 asked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 | 5 parts: (a) to (e) | 20 (5 + 5 + 2 + 3 + 5) | HTML page design, JSP loop program, inline CSS, JDBC, alt attribute |
| Q2 | 2 parts | 10 (5 + 5) | JSP action elements and an HTML table with merged cells |
| Q3 | 2 parts | 10 (5 + 5) | WML navigation, session versus cookie, executeQuery versus executeUpdate |
| Q4 | 2 parts | 10 (5 + 5) | Type-1 driver JSP page and JSP scripting elements |
| Q5 | 5 short notes, attempt any 4 | 10 (4 × 2½) | error-page, request object, web container, OnClick, META tag |
One detail worth noticing: the BCS 053 question paper for June 2023, December 2023 and June 2025 printed a weightage of 75%, while December 2025 and June 2026 print 70%. The marks and time have not changed, but check the front page of your own paper so you know how the term-end score feeds your final grade.
Question 1 mixes 2, 3 and 5 mark parts, so time planning matters more here than in a plain essay paper. Practise on at least three older papers from our IGNOU Previous Year Question Paper page and keep about 45 minutes for Question 1 and 25 minutes for each of the other three.
6. Topics IGNOU Keeps Bringing Back
HTML page coding and WML appeared in all six BCS 053 papers we checked, and JDBC, CSS, JSP action elements and JavaScript DOM appeared in five of six.
We built this table from official IGNOU papers only: June 2023, December 2023, June 2024, June 2025 and December 2025, set against the June 2026 paper. We could not find the December 2024 paper on an official IGNOU site, so it is not counted.

Three topics sat out June 2026 after appearing in every other paper we checked: XML with DTD or schema, GET and POST, and tier or MVC architecture. That does not guarantee they return in December 2026, but it is a strong reason to keep them on your list. Our IGNOU Solved Guess Paper page brings together the topics we see most across IGNOU courses.
7. How Our Answers Are Written and Checked
Every BCS 053 answer is written from the IGNOU self-learning material, sized to its printed marks and checked by a second reviewer before it goes into the file.
The answers were written after reading how earlier BCS 053 papers worded the same topics, since IGNOU often asks the same idea from a new angle: the jsp:plugin question in June 2026 had already appeared in June 2025, and the error-page element returned as a short note after being a 4-mark part a year earlier.
The review covers three things: technical accuracy, code that is complete and correctly nested, and length that matches the marks. A 2½-mark short note gets a definition, a small snippet or diagram and one use; a 5-mark coding question gets full code with an explanation of each part.
Where the course material teaches a method that has since changed in current Java versions, the Type-1 driver being the clearest case in this paper, the file writes the answer the way the study material does and adds a brief note on how the same thing is done today. You score the marks and still understand modern practice.
8. Practical and Solved File Index
BCS 053 has a companion practical course, BCSL-057 Web Programming Lab, and 9 of the 16 sub-questions in this paper ask for code you would also write in that lab.
The index below lists every sub-question in the June 2026 paper, the course unit it comes from, the kind of practical or written skill it tests, and whether its answer is on this page or in the full file. Use it alongside any older BCA Question Paper to see which skills keep turning up.

9. Programmes That Include BCS 053
BCS 053 Web Programming is taught in IGNOU's BCA Revised programme and carries over, with the same code and 2 credits, into BCA_NEW and BCA_NEWOL.
It sits in Semester V of the Bachelor of Computer Applications (Revised), alongside BCS-051, BCS-052, BCS-054, BCS-055 and the three lab courses BCSL-056, BCSL-057 and BCSL-058. The Semester V assignment booklet lists all eight courses together.
IGNOU's internal credit transfer document for students moving from BCA Revised to BCA_NEW or BCA_NEWOL maps BCS-053 Web Programming, 2 credits, to a course with the same code, title and credits. So the term-end paper, and this solved file, apply to students of both schemes.
10. How to Get the Full Solved Question Paper

11. BCS 053 Web Programming FAQs
What is BCS 053 Web Programming and which IGNOU programme is it part of?
BCS 053 Web Programming is a 2-credit theory course in Semester V of the IGNOU Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA Revised). It teaches client-side work in HTML5, CSS, XML, JavaScript and WML, then server-side JSP with sessions and JDBC. IGNOU's credit transfer document also lists the same 2-credit course inside BCA_NEW and BCA_NEWOL, so students of those schemes sit this paper too.
How many questions are in the June 2026 question paper?
The June 2026 BCS 053 paper has five main questions split into 16 sub-questions. Question 1 is compulsory and carries 20 marks across five parts, and you then attempt any three of Questions 2 to 5 for 10 marks each. The paper is set for 50 marks and 2 hours, with a 70% weightage printed on the front page this session.
Which two answers are shown on this page?
This page shows complete answers to Question 1(a), the HTML web page with a header, highlighted name, navigation links, live date and time and a copyright footer, and Question 4(b) on JSP scripting elements. Both carry 5 marks and include full code with explanations. The other 14 sub-questions of the paper are answered only in the full file.
How do I get the full solved question paper on WhatsApp?
Send a message to WhatsApp 9899436384 with the text BCS 053 June 2026 solved paper. Our team replies with the price and shares the complete PDF once you confirm. The full file answers all 16 sub-questions of the June 2026 paper, which means the 2 answers you can read here plus the 14 answers that are not shown on this page.
Which BCS 053 topics repeat most often in IGNOU papers?
Across the five official papers we checked (June 2023 to December 2025) plus June 2026, HTML page coding and WML appeared in all six papers. JDBC, CSS style sheets, JSP action elements and JavaScript DOM each appeared in five. XML, GET and POST, and tier architecture were also asked five times but skipped in June 2026, so revise with those in mind.
Is the solved file useful for the BCSL-057 lab exam?
Yes, to a point. BCSL-057 Web Programming Lab is the companion practical course to BCS 053, and many theory questions ask for the same things you build in the lab: HTML tables, CSS styling, WML cards and JSP pages that talk to a database. The coded answers in this file are complete programs, so they double as practice before your lab session.
How are the BCS 053 answers written and checked?
Prateek Talwar wrote the BCS 053 answers from the IGNOU self-learning material, after studying how earlier papers phrased the same topics. Sheetal Kirola then reviewed every answer for accuracy, code syntax and length against the marks printed beside each question. Coding answers follow the study material's own conventions, so what you write in the exam matches what the examiner expects to see.
Is BCS 053 still part of the new IGNOU BCA?
Yes. IGNOU's internal credit transfer document maps BCS-053 Web Programming, 2 credits, in BCA Revised to a course with the same code, title and credits in BCA_NEW and BCA_NEWOL. On eGyanKosh, the course material sits under the archived BCA Revised Semester V listing. Check your own programme guide or grade card to confirm which scheme you are registered in.
12. Who Wrote and Checked the BCS 053 Answers
The BCS 053 answers were written by Prateek Talwar and reviewed by Sheetal Kirola at Unnati Educations.
Prateek Talwar prepares IGNOU computer-science solved papers from the course blocks and the official term-end paper. Sheetal Kirola, Academic Head (M.Ed.), checks every answer for technical accuracy, complete and correctly nested code, and length against the marks printed beside each question.
