Course Overview

BPHCT 131 Solved Guess Paper 2026 is the file our Physics team hands to a first-semester student who has four weeks left and a Mechanics book that runs to four thick blocks. It carries 12 exam-style questions with complete model answers, each one traced back to a question that has actually been set in a BPHCT-131 Term-End paper. Nothing in it is invented. If a topic never appeared in six sessions, it is not in the file.

Mechanics is the first physics course in the B.Sc. programme and it is also the one that catches people out, because the paper mixes vector algebra and differential equations from Block 1 with rotational motion and oscillations from the later blocks. Our wider IGNOU Solved Guess Paper collection follows the same method across course codes, and this page shows you exactly what that method produces for BPHCT-131.

What the BPHCT 131 Solved Guess Paper Contains

The file holds 12 exam-style BPHCT-131 questions, each with a full model answer, a block and section tag, a marks value and the list of sessions in which that topic last appeared. There is no filler chapter summary and no copied textbook page. Every page is an answer you can write in the hall.

The 12 answers sit across Block 1, Block 3 and Block 4, which is where the 5-mark theory parts of recent Mechanics papers have been concentrated. Alongside them the file carries a six-session frequency map of the whole course, a short note on what not to over-prepare, and the answer discipline examiners reward. Students usually read the discipline page first and the answers second.

Each answer is laid out the same way. A short meaning or definition line taken from the IGNOU book, then the defining relation, then three to five numbered points, then a one-line conclusion. That shape is deliberate. A 5-mark Mechanics answer that opens with a definition and states the correct formula rarely loses more than half a mark, even when the handwriting is rushed.

5 Sample Questions with Answers from the BPHCT-131 Mechanics Guess Paper

Five of the 12 answers are reproduced in full below so you can judge the writing quality before you enquire. These are not trimmed previews. What you read here is exactly what sits in the PDF, formatting included.

Sample 15 marksPriority: HighBlock 3 / Central ForcesLast appeared: Jun 2025, Dec 2024, Jun 2024Target length: about 150 words

State and explain Kepler's laws of planetary motion.

Meaning. Kepler's laws describe the motion of the planets orbiting the Sun under its gravitational, inverse-square force.

  1. Law of orbits. Every planet moves in an elliptical orbit with the Sun situated at one focus of the ellipse.
  2. Law of areas. The radial vector joining the Sun to a planet sweeps out equal areas in equal intervals of time.
  3. Law of periods. The square of the orbital period is proportional to the cube of the semi-major axis, T² = k a³, so the ratio T²/a³ is the same for all planets orbiting the same body.
  4. Physical consequence. A planet moves faster when it is nearer the Sun, because the areal velocity ½ r²ω stays constant.

Conclusion. Kepler's three laws follow directly from the attractive inverse-square nature of gravitation and the constancy of angular momentum.

Sample 25 marksPriority: HighBlock 3 / Rotational MotionLast appeared: Jun 2025, Jun 2024, Dec 2023Target length: about 150 words

Define torque and discuss its main features.

Meaning. If a net force F is exerted on a particle at a point P having position vector r about an origin O, the torque about O is τ = r × F.

  1. It is the rotational analogue of force. A net force changes translational motion, while a net torque changes rotational motion.
  2. Its magnitude is τ = rF sinθ, where θ is the angle between r and F placed tail to tail. The SI unit is N m.
  3. Its direction is given by the right-hand rule and is perpendicular to the plane containing r and F.
  4. The net torque on a particle at rest or in uniform rotation is zero. Its rotation changes only when a net external torque acts.

Conclusion. Torque measures the turning effect of a force and is as fundamental to rotational motion as force is to translational motion.

Sample 35 marksPriority: HighBlock 3 / Conservation LawsLast appeared: Jun 2025, Dec 2024, Jun 2024Target length: about 150 words

What is a collision? Distinguish between elastic and inelastic collisions.

Meaning. A collision is said to take place between two or more objects when they come close enough to interact for a brief time interval. Physical contact is not necessary.

  1. Elastic collision. Both the linear momentum and the total kinetic energy are conserved, so pᵢ = pᶠ and Kᵢ = Kᶠ.
  2. Inelastic collision. Linear momentum is conserved but the total kinetic energy is not. The total energy is still conserved.
  3. Conservation laws predict collision outcomes even without knowing the interaction force.
  4. Equal masses in one dimension. When a particle collides head-on with an equal-mass particle at rest, the incident particle stops and the target moves off with the incident velocity.
  5. A much heavier target reflects the incident particle back, while a much lighter target moves off at nearly twice the speed.

Conclusion. Elastic collisions conserve both momentum and kinetic energy, whereas inelastic collisions conserve momentum and total energy only.

Sample 45 marksPriority: HighBlock 4 / Harmonic OscillationsLast appeared: Dec 2025, Dec 2024, Jun 2023Target length: about 150 words

What is simple harmonic motion? State its basic characteristics.

Meaning. Simple harmonic motion is the simplest kind of oscillatory motion, illustrated by the oscillations of an idealised spring-mass system.

  1. It is a periodic to-and-fro motion about a fixed equilibrium position.
  2. The motion repeats itself after a fixed time period and is characterised by amplitude, frequency and phase.
  3. An idealised spring-mass system is the standard model used to bring out the basic features of SHM.
  4. The mathematical techniques developed for SHM also let us work out the energy associated with oscillatory systems.
  5. SHM is the foundation for superposition of oscillations, damped oscillations and wave motion.

Conclusion. SHM is the basic periodic oscillation about equilibrium, described by amplitude, frequency and phase, and it underpins every oscillatory and wave topic in the course.

Sample 55 marksPriority: HighBlock 1 / Vector AlgebraLast appeared: Dec 2025, Dec 2024, Jun 2023Target length: about 150 words

Define the scalar and vector products of two vectors and state their properties.

Meaning. The scalar or dot product of two vectors a and b is a·b = ab cosθ, while the vector or cross product is a × b = ab sinθ ç, where θ is the angle between them.

  1. The scalar product is a scalar. It is zero when the vectors are perpendicular and maximum when they are parallel.
  2. The vector product is a vector directed perpendicular to the plane containing a and b, with its direction given by the right-hand rule.
  3. The vector product of a vector with itself is zero, so r × r = 0.
  4. A unit vector has unit magnitude. The unit vector along a is â = a/|a|, which specifies direction only.

Conclusion. The scalar product measures the parallel component of two vectors and gives a scalar, while the vector product measures their perpendicular turning effect and gives a vector.

Five samples above, seven questions remaining in the complete file. The full list of those seven is given further down this page.

Block titles and the Block 1 unit names above are taken from the IGNOU self-learning material hosted on eGyanKosh, the university's own digital repository. If you want the printed booklets alongside the answers, our BPHCT 131 Study Material page lists what is available for the Mechanics course.

BPHCT-131 Important Questions That Repeat in Every Term-End Paper

Four topics have appeared in all six Mechanics papers from June 2023 to December 2025: Kepler's laws, collisions, damped oscillations and wave motion. If you prepare nothing else, prepare those four. They alone can carry a large share of the 5-mark parts.

The table below lists only the High-priority band. High means a topic appeared four or more times in six sessions, or appeared three times with a gap in the most recent paper, which usually signals a return. Medium topics such as central forces, friction on an inclined plane, integrating-factor problems and boundary-value ODEs appear two or three times and are worth a second pass. Low topics such as the Wronskian, centre of mass and mass versus weight appeared once and belong on a backup list.

High-priority BPHCT-131 topics and how often each appeared across the six Term-End papers from June 2023 to December 2025
TopicBlockAppearances in 6 papersWhat the examiner usually asks
Kepler's laws and satellite orbitsBlock 36State the three laws, then an orbital-period calculation using T² proportional to a³
Elastic and inelastic collisionsBlock 36Define a collision, separate the two types, then derive final velocities in one dimension
Damped oscillationsBlock 46Write the equation of motion, then logarithmic decrement or relaxation time
Wave motionBlock 46Read amplitude, wavelength, frequency and speed off a given wave equation
Vector algebraBlock 15Unit vector in a given direction, resolving a force into components, scalar and vector products
Moment of inertia and work by a torqueBlock 35Angular speed and angular momentum of a disc, then work done by a constant torque
Exact ordinary differential equationsBlock 14Test for exactness and solve, or reduce to exact form
Newton's first law in contextBlock 24The bus jerk, the breaking string, or why a passenger lurches forward
Work-energy theoremBlock 24Work by a variable force along a line, or a ramp and train problem
Uniform circular motionBlock 24Centripetal force, angular velocity and the merry-go-round style numerical
TorqueBlock 34Define with τ = r × F, list features, then compute torque on a rotating particle
Simple harmonic motionBlock 44State two characteristics, or find the energy of a spring-mass oscillator
Superposition and Lissajous figuresBlock 44Combine two collinear or orthogonal oscillations and identify the resulting figure
Angular momentum and its conservationBlock 33 with a recent gapDefine L = r × p, state the conservation law, then apply τ = dL/dt

Counts here come from our own reading of the official Term-End papers published by IGNOU, which anyone can cross-check on the IGNOU webservices question paper archive. We publish the counts openly because a guess paper is only as good as the papers behind it.

BPHCT-131 Mechanics Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme

The BPHCT-131 paper runs for 2 hours, carries 50 marks, and asks you to attempt 13 parts in total: five parts of 2 marks in Question 1, and two parts of 5 marks in each of Questions 2 to 5. All questions are compulsory but internal choice is given inside every question, and a calculator is permitted.

Question-wise marks distribution in the IGNOU BPHCT-131 Mechanics Term-End Examination
QuestionWhat to attemptMarksHow to write it
Question 1Any five parts out of the set given5 × 2 = 10About 70 words each. One definition line plus the formula is usually enough.
Question 2Any two parts2 × 5 = 10About 150 words each. Definition, formula, three to five points, conclusion.
Question 3Any two parts2 × 5 = 10Often a split-mark numerical such as 2+3. Show every substitution step.
Question 4Any two parts2 × 5 = 10Rotational and central-force territory. Draw the diagram even when not asked.
Question 5Any two parts2 × 5 = 10Oscillations and waves. State units against every final answer.
Total13 parts50Roughly 9 minutes per part, so do not overwrite the 2-mark ones.

One habit separates a pass from a good grade in Mechanics: writing the formula before the arithmetic. Method marks are awarded even when the final number is wrong. If you want to see the pattern hold across sessions yourself, work through an IGNOU Previous Year Question Paper for BPHCT-131 before you touch the guess paper.

How We Built This BPHCT 131 Solved Guess Paper

We read six BPHCT-131 Term-End papers from June 2023 to December 2025, logged every topic session by session, then cross-checked the list against the June 2026 paper before locking the 2026 edition. The frequency table you saw above is the working sheet from that exercise, not a decoration.

The selection rule is simple. A topic earns a modelled answer when it clears one of three tests: it appears four or more times in six sessions, it appears three times with a gap in the latest paper, or it sits on a syllabus area the examiner has recently started rotating through. Anything that appeared once stays out of the answer set and goes on the backup list instead.

Writing the answers is a separate job. Each one is drafted from the IGNOU Mechanics blocks, kept to the word target for its marks value, then read back by a teacher against the marking pattern of the actual paper. Where the book gives a specific phrasing for a definition, we keep it, because that is the phrasing the evaluator is scanning for.

What we deliberately do not do: pad the file with derivations that have never been asked, promise a fixed percentage of the paper, or reprint the textbook. A guess paper is a shortlist with answers attached. Anything beyond that is weight you have to carry into the exam hall.

Who Should Use the BPHCT-131 Guess Paper in BSCG and BSCM

BPHCT-131 is a first-semester Physics core course in IGNOU's Bachelor of Science (General), BSCG, and Bachelor of Science (Multidisciplinary under FYUP), BSCM. Students of both programmes sit the same Mechanics paper, so this file serves both without any change.

It suits four kinds of students in particular. The working student with four weeks left and no time to read four blocks. The repeater who cleared the assignment but missed the Term-End. The learner whose school physics was in Hindi medium and who needs the English terminology fixed before the exam. And the careful student who has read the book already and wants a shortlist to revise from on the last two days.

If you are taking more than one Physics paper this semester, look at our BSCG Guess Paper listing as well, because the same six-session method has been run for other course codes in the programme. Preparing two papers with one method saves more time than preparing one paper twice.

Who it does not suit: anyone hoping to skip the assignment. BPHCT-131 carries 30 per cent weightage for continuous evaluation through the tutor-marked assignment, and no guess paper replaces those marks.

BPHCT-131 Questions Still Inside the Complete File

Five answers are shown on this page and seven remain in the complete BPHCT-131 file, giving 12 in total. The seven are listed below by name so you know exactly what you are asking for.

  1. Angular momentum and its conservation. Definition of L = r × p, the right-hand rule, dependence on the reference point, and the conservation statement through τ = dL/dt.
  2. Central force and central conservative force. The distinction between the two, why angular momentum stays constant, and why mechanical energy is conserved only in the second case.
  3. Centre of mass of a system of particles. The two-body position vector, the Cartesian coordinates, extension to N particles, and why the idea simplifies many-particle motion.
  4. Reduced mass of a two-particle system. The relation 1/μ = 1/m₁ + 1/m₂, why μ is smaller than either mass, and the diatomic-molecule example.
  5. Moment of inertia and the work-energy theorem for rotation. Why I depends on the axis, the τ proportional to α relation, and W = ∫τ dθ as a change in rotational kinetic energy.
  6. Superposition of harmonic oscillations and Lissajous figures. Resultant of collinear oscillations, orthogonal oscillations, and how frequency ratio, amplitude and phase set the figure.
  7. Wave motion, nature and types. What a disturbance is, water, sound and electromagnetic examples, and the medium versus no-medium distinction.

The complete file also carries the student instruction page, the three preparation rules, the priority legend and the full 25-topic frequency map. Message us on WhatsApp 9899436384 with your course code and session to get it.

BPHCL-132 Practical File Index for BPHCT-131 Mechanics Students

BPHCT-131 is the theory course and BPHCL-132, Mechanics: Laboratory, is the paired first-semester lab course, so most students need a practical file in the same session. The two are marked separately, and a missing practical file holds up the result even when the theory paper has gone well.

IGNOU describes the BPHCL-132 laboratory as covering experiments on the determination of acceleration due to gravity and on material properties such as the elastic constants of a wire and the spring constant of a spring-mass system. The purpose stated in the course description is to build the habit of setting up apparatus, taking readings, doing simple calculations and reading the result honestly.

Experiment groups in the IGNOU BPHCL-132 Mechanics Laboratory practical file and what each write-up needs
Experiment groupWhat is measuredWhat the write-up must show
Acceleration due to gravityValue of g using a pendulum or a falling-body arrangementApparatus sketch, observation table of length against time period, calculation of g, and percentage error against the standard value
Elastic constants of a wireYoung's modulus, rigidity modulus or a related elastic constantLoad and extension readings, the least-count statement for the measuring instrument, the graph, and the slope-based calculation
Spring constant of a spring-mass systemSpring constant k by the static and the oscillation methodTwo observation tables, comparison of both methods, time-period readings, and a short note on why the values differ
Measurement and error practiceLeast count, zero error and repeated readings on basic instrumentsInstrument details, least-count working, mean of repeated readings, and the absolute and relative error stated separately

We prepare BPHCL-132 practical files with the aim, apparatus, theory, formula, observation tables, sample calculation, result and precautions laid out the way an examiner expects at the viva. Ask for it on WhatsApp 9899436384 along with your BPHCT-131 request and we will quote both together.

BPHCT-131 Guess Paper FAQs

Is the BPHCT 131 Solved Guess Paper valid for the December 2026 Term-End Examination?

Yes. The 2026 edition was built from the six Term-End papers running from June 2023 to December 2025 and then cross-checked against the June 2026 paper, so it is current for the December 2026 session. IGNOU holds Mechanics Term-End examinations in June and December only. If the syllabus or the paper structure changes, we revise the file and existing buyers get the updated version.

How many questions does the BPHCT-131 Mechanics guess paper contain?

The file contains 12 exam-style questions with complete model answers. Five of those answers are reproduced in full on this page as samples, which leaves seven inside the complete file. Each answer is tagged with its block, its marks value, a High, Medium or Low priority, and the sessions in which that topic last appeared in a BPHCT-131 paper.

Can I pass BPHCT-131 Mechanics by preparing only this guess paper?

It improves your odds considerably but we will not promise a pass on the file alone. The guess paper covers the theory parts that repeat most often. Numerical parts change their data every session, so you also need practice from past papers. Treat the file as a shortlist with answers attached, and work at least two full previous papers alongside it.

Are BPHCT-131 numerical problems included in the guess paper?

The 12 modelled answers are theory answers, because that is where fixed wording earns marks. Numericals in Mechanics repeat in method but not in data, so memorising a worked example helps less than knowing the formula and the steps. For numerical practice we point students to the previous year papers, where the same problem types recur with changed numbers.

Is the BPHCT-131 guess paper useful for both BSCG and BSCM students?

Yes. BPHCT-131 Mechanics is offered in the Bachelor of Science (General), BSCG, and in the Bachelor of Science (Multidisciplinary under FYUP), BSCM. Both programmes sit the same Term-End paper with the same two-hour, 50-mark structure, so a single file serves both. Mention your programme when you message us and we will confirm before sending anything.

In which language are the BPHCT-131 Mechanics answers written?

The answers are written in simple English, using the symbols, units and definitions exactly as the IGNOU Mechanics blocks give them. Students who studied physics in Hindi medium at school usually find this the fastest way to fix the English terminology before the exam. If you need Hindi-medium support while revising, tell us on WhatsApp and we will guide you through it.

How do I receive the BPHCT-131 guess paper after enquiring?

Message 9899436384 on WhatsApp with your course code, programme and exam session. Our team replies with the file details and the price. Once you confirm and complete the payment, the print-ready PDF reaches the same WhatsApp number, usually within minutes during working hours. You can print it or read it on your phone, whichever suits your revision.

Does Unnati Educations also provide the BPHCL-132 practical file for BPHCT-131 students?

Yes. BPHCL-132, Mechanics: Laboratory, is the paired first-semester lab course and we prepare its practical file with aim, apparatus, theory, formula, observation tables, sample calculation, result and precautions. Ask for it in the same WhatsApp message as your BPHCT-131 request on 9899436384 and we will quote the theory guess paper and the practical file together.
