Quick answer. NIOS admission after CBSE compartment fail runs through four streams, and two of them are open to a Class 12 candidate today. Stream 2, the second chance route for board failures, closes on 17 August 2026 under Notification 16/2026 and leads to the September and October 2026 public examination. The On Demand route under Stream 4 stays open throughout the year.

NIOS Admission After CBSE Compartment Fail Starts With Stream Selection

NIOS runs four admission streams. Stream 1 is fresh admission in two blocks leading to the April or October public examination. Stream 2 is the second chance route for board failures. Stream 3 and Stream 4 are admission for the On Demand Examination System, at Secondary and Senior Secondary level respectively.

A Class 12 candidate is dealing with Senior Secondary, so the live options are Stream 2, Stream 4 and Stream 1 Block 1. The stream cannot be changed once an admission is confirmed, which makes this the decision that matters most. Learners who want the wider background can read our NIOS Stream 1 admission guide.

NIOS Stream 2 Closes on 17 August 2026

Stream 2 opened on 1 May 2026 under Notification 02/2026 dated 27 April 2026. The last date was extended twice, first by Notification 10/2026 dated 30 June 2026, and then by Notification 16/2026 dated 31 July 2026, which set the final date as Monday 17 August 2026.

Several websites still show 30 June as the closing date. That figure is out of date. Check the notification page on the NIOS portal at sdmis.nios.ac.in before you accept any deadline you read elsewhere, including on this page.

The timing this year is unusually kind. The Class 12 compartment result was declared on 12 August 2026, five days before the Stream 2 window shuts. In most years the window closes before the compartment result is out, which leaves candidates with no second chance route at all.

If you did not clear your compartment examination, call the NIOS desk on 9654279279 today. Four days is enough time to apply, but not enough time to fix a mistake in the form.

Which NIOS Stream Is Right for a Class 12 Compartment Student Right Now

A compartment result that does not go your way feels final on the day it arrives. It is not. The Senior Secondary qualification can still be completed within months, and for most students reading this before 17 August the answer is Stream 2.

Stream 2 covers the full NIOS subject list, keeps you inside the public examination route, and allows transfer of credit for subjects you have already passed. You appear in the September and October 2026 examination and the result normally follows in December.

If you cannot complete the application by 17 August, Stream 4 stays open throughout the year. It is faster to book but carries a restriction that catches people out, explained further down.

If your subject is outside the On Demand list and you have missed Stream 2, Stream 1 Block 1 runs until 15 September 2026, with the examination in April and May 2027.

CBSE Compartment Result 2026 for Class 12

CBSE declared the Class 12 compartment result on 12 August 2026 for the examination held on 28 July 2026. A total of 2,91,576 candidates registered for the supplementary examination and 2,75,287 appeared, a figure that includes improvement candidates alongside compartment candidates.

Detail Figure
Result declared 12 August 2026
Examination held 28 July 2026
Registered for the supplementary examination 2,91,576
Appeared in the supplementary examination 2,75,287
Appeared in the compartment category 1,64,231
Compartment pass percentage 53.08 per cent
Compartment pass percentage in 2024 29.78 per cent

The pass percentage has climbed a long way from 29.78 per cent in 2024. It still leaves close to 77,000 Senior Secondary candidates who did not clear, all of them facing the same four day window before Stream 2 shuts.

NIOS Stream 2 Eligibility for Class 12 Compartment Candidates

Stream 2 admission is open to learners who appeared in the public examination of a recognised board and were declared unsuccessful, whether that was a compartment or a full fail. It covers CBSE, CISCE and state board candidates alike, and the minimum age at Senior Secondary level is 15 years.

Learners completing the course choose five subjects with at least one language. Learners who have already passed and only want to improve a qualification can take part admission in up to four subjects instead.

The scanned copy of the failed marksheet issued by the board has to be uploaded, along with a recent passport size photograph, a signature preferably in black ink, valid identity proof, and a caste certificate where a category concession applies.

Our detailed NIOS Stream 2 admission guide covers the subject combinations and the fee structure in full.

Transfer of Credit Rules for NIOS Stream 2 Admission

Transfer of credit lets you carry forward subjects you have already cleared instead of studying them again. The limit depends on where those subjects were passed, and this single rule decides how many papers you actually have to sit.

Where the subject was passed Maximum subjects transferable
Another recognised board such as CBSE, CISCE or a state board Two
NIOS, as a former NIOS learner Four

For a CBSE candidate this means two subjects can be carried across and the remaining three have to be taken with NIOS. Students often assume every passed subject transfers automatically, then discover at the form stage that they are studying three papers rather than one.

The original failed marksheet carrying the reference number must be posted with the admission form to the Online Cell at NIOS, Room 408, A-24-25, Institutional Area, Sector 62, NOIDA 201309. Uploading it online alone does not complete the transfer of credit claim.

NIOS Stream 4 On Demand Route if You Miss 17 August

The On Demand Examination System, or ODES, accepts online admission throughout the year. At Senior Secondary level this is Stream 4, and eligibility covers learners who appeared in a recognised board examination but could not clear it. It is the route that stays open after Stream 2 shuts.

One restriction decides whether it suits you. A learner registered under Stream 4 may appear only through On Demand mode and is not permitted to sit the October and November or April and May public examinations. The choice fixes the examination route for the whole admission.

Aspect Position under ODES
Examination fee 500 rupees per subject, 200 rupees extra with a practical
Venue Regional centre, NIOS headquarters at NOIDA or the allotted Kendriya Vidyalaya
Theory examination days Tuesday to Thursday at Kendriya Vidyalayas, Tuesday to Friday at NOIDA, 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm
Months with no examination April, May, October and November
Result Last week of every month for the previous month

Delhi region learners appear at the NOIDA headquarters. Registering twice in the same month for the same subject is not permitted, and the NIOS identity card must be carried to the centre. September is the last examination month before the pause, and the next opening after that is December 2026.

NIOS Senior Secondary Subjects Available Under On Demand Examination

ODES does not cover every NIOS subject, which is one reason Stream 2 is the stronger option while it lasts. Confirm that your failed subject appears below before choosing this route.

Hindi (301), English (302), Sanskrit (309), Mathematics (311), Physics (312), Chemistry (313), Biology (314), History (315), Geography (316), Political Science (317), Economics (318), Business Studies (319), Accountancy (320), Home Science (321), Psychology (328), Sociology (331), Painting (332), Environmental Science (333), Mass Communication (335), Data Entry Operations (336), Introduction to Law (338).

Subjects a Class 12 candidate commonly fails, such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Accountancy, all appear on this list. Computer Science does not, so a candidate carrying that subject has to use the public examination route.

NIOS Stream 2 Versus Stream 4 for Class 12 Candidates

Point of difference Stream 2 Stream 4
Status today Open until 17 August 2026 Open throughout the year
Examination mode September and October 2026 public examination On Demand mode only
Public examination allowed Yes No
Subject coverage Full NIOS subject list Restricted On Demand list
Transfer of credit Two subjects from another board, four from NIOS Available subject to the same guidelines
Result Expected December 2026 Last week of the month after the examination

For a student who can apply by Monday, Stream 2 is usually the better route. It keeps the public examination open, covers every subject, and finishes inside the same calendar year. Stream 4 earns its place when the deadline has passed or when only one paper is pending and it appears on the On Demand list.

NIOS Admission After CBSE Compartment Fail Through Stream 1 Block 1

Stream 1 Block 1 opened on 16 March 2026 and closed without a late fee on 31 July 2026. It remains open with a late fee until 15 September 2026, after which the block shuts for this session. Block 1 learners appear in the April and May 2027 public examination.

Miss 15 September and the next opening is Block 2 on 16 September 2026, which leads to the October and November 2027 examination. The two dates sit one day apart on the calendar but a full year apart in outcome.

Late fee amounts are quoted differently across websites, so no figure is printed here. Check the amount on sdmis.nios.ac.in at the moment you apply, since the slab changes with the date.

What Waiting Costs You After a CBSE Compartment Fail

Route Admission by Examination Result expected
Stream 2 17 August 2026 September and October 2026 Around December 2026
Stream 4 On Demand Open now September 2026 if a slot is available, otherwise December 2026 Last week of the following month
Stream 1 Block 1 15 September 2026 April and May 2027 Around June 2027
Stream 1 Block 2 Opens 16 September 2026 October and November 2027 Around December 2027

The gap between the first row and the last is roughly twelve months. For a candidate aiming at a graduation admission next year, that is the difference between applying on time and applying a year late, and it turns on an application submitted before Monday.

What to Do Before 17 August 2026 After a CBSE Compartment Fail

Four days is workable but leaves no room for a correction. Work through this order today.

  1. Download the compartment scorecard from the DigiLocker results portal and save a clear scanned copy, since the failed marksheet has to be uploaded with the form.
  2. List the subjects you have already passed, because a maximum of two of them can be carried across from CBSE under transfer of credit.
  3. Keep a recent passport size photograph, a signature in black ink, proof of age, proof of address and identity proof ready before you open the form.
  4. Choose your five subjects with at least one language, or up to four subjects if you are taking part admission for a qualification update.
  5. Check every entry before payment. The form locks once the fee is paid and the stream cannot be changed afterwards.
  6. Apply on sdmis.nios.ac.in only, and keep the payment receipt and a copy of the submitted form.
  7. Post the original failed marksheet to the Online Cell at NOIDA if you are claiming transfer of credit.

Three mistakes account for most rejected applications each cycle. Paying the fee before checking the subject combination, assuming every passed CBSE subject transfers automatically, and uploading documents that are blurred or cropped into the wrong field.

Talk to a NIOS Counsellor Before You Pay Any Fee

With a deadline four days away there is no room to fix a wrong choice. A ten minute conversation before payment is worth more than any amount of reading afterwards, and our counselling desk handles these cases through every admission cycle.

A consultation covers the specific things that go wrong. Which subjects qualify for transfer of credit, how your CBSE subject maps to a NIOS subject code, whether Stream 2 or Stream 4 suits your case, whether your documents will pass verification, and whether the timeline works against the college deadline you are chasing.

Call the NIOS desk on 9654279279 to talk it through, or send your marksheet on WhatsApp at 9899436384. The alternate number is 9654279279. Share the subject you did not clear and the subjects you passed, and you will get a straight answer on which route fits.

NIOS Study Support for Class 12 Learners From Unnati Education

Unnati Education is an independent academic support platform working with NIOS, IGNOU and B.Ed learners. The NIOS desk supplies solved tutor marked assignments, practical files, subject notes, objective question sets and intext and terminal question solutions for Senior Secondary subjects, prepared against the current syllabus rather than reused across sessions.

Stream 2 learners have a short preparation period between admission and the September and October examination, and the assignment deadlines fall inside it. That is where most of the pressure lands once the admission is done.

Unnati Education does not issue enrolment numbers, marksheets or certificates and cannot influence an admission or a result. Those come from NIOS alone.

For NIOS Class 12 study material, solved assignments or practical files, message our desk on WhatsApp at 9899436384. The alternate number is 9654279279.

Frequently Asked Questions About NIOS Options After Compartment

Can I still take NIOS Stream 2 admission after the CBSE Class 12 compartment result

Yes, until 17 August 2026. Notification 16/2026 dated 31 July 2026 extended the last date for online Stream 2 admission to that Monday. Stream 2 is open to learners who were declared unsuccessful in the public examination of any recognised board at Senior Secondary level. Apply on sdmis.nios.ac.in and confirm the date there before paying anything.

What happens if I miss the 17 August 2026 NIOS deadline

The On Demand Examination System under Stream 4 stays open throughout the year, so that route remains available. Stream 1 Block 1 also runs with a late fee until 15 September 2026, with the examination in April and May 2027. What you lose by missing Monday is the September and October 2026 public examination and a result inside this calendar year.

How many subjects can I transfer under NIOS transfer of credit

A maximum of two subjects can be transferred from another recognised board such as CBSE, CISCE or a state board. Former NIOS learners can transfer up to four. For a Class 12 CBSE candidate this means two passed subjects carry across and the rest must be taken with NIOS. The original failed marksheet has to be posted to the Online Cell at NOIDA.

Which NIOS stream should a Class 12 compartment student choose

Stream 2 while it is open, because it covers the full subject list and keeps the public examination route available. After 17 August 2026, a candidate with one or two pending subjects that appear on the On Demand list is better served by Stream 4. A candidate whose subject sits outside that list should complete a Stream 1 Block 1 admission instead.

Does a NIOS Senior Secondary certificate carry the same value as a CBSE certificate

Yes. NIOS is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and its Senior Secondary certificate is recognised for higher education and employment alongside other national boards. Individual universities and recruiters set their own eligibility conditions, so candidates should confirm the specific requirement of the institution they are applying to before enrolling.

Can I talk to someone before choosing a NIOS stream

Yes. Call the NIOS desk at Unnati Education on 9654279279, or send your compartment marksheet on WhatsApp with the subject you did not clear and the subjects you passed. The counsellor checks which subjects qualify for transfer of credit, how they map to NIOS subject codes, and whether Stream 2 is still workable in the time left.

What NIOS Class 12 study material does Unnati Education provide

The NIOS desk supplies solved tutor marked assignments, practical files, subject notes, objective question sets, and intext and terminal question solutions for Senior Secondary learners. Material is prepared against the current syllabus for the subject and session you name, and is sent on WhatsApp. Unnati Education is an independent platform with no connection to NIOS.

Unnati Education is an independent academic support platform. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) or the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in any manner. Admission dates, fees and examination schedules mentioned here are drawn from published notifications and should be verified on the official NIOS admission portal before applying.
