Natyakala 385 for NIOS Senior Secondary Students of Dramatics
19 lessons across six modules. 7 lessons go to TMA, 12 come in the public examination, and the theory paper is 60 marks in two hours.
NIOS Natyakala Syllabus Class 12 in Simple Terms
Short answer: Natyakala, subject code 385, is the NIOS senior secondary course in dramatics. It has 19 lessons across six modules. Seven lessons are assessed through TMA and twelve appear in the public examination, which is a 60 mark theory paper of 31 questions written in two hours.
Two things make 385 different from most senior secondary subjects. The theory paper is 60 marks rather than 70 or 80, and it runs for two hours instead of three. The official course material is in Hindi, so the syllabus documents below are reproduced in the original Devanagari exactly as NIOS issued them.
This page explains the NIOS Natyakala Syllabus Class 12 in plain English around those two source documents, so you can follow the structure even if you are more comfortable reading English than formal Hindi.

Four Points to Notice in the Natyakala Bifurcation
First, Module 3 and Module 6 send nothing to TMA. Every lesson of Ras Vimarsh and Loknatya is examination material, which is why those four lessons cannot be left for the last week.
Second, the lesson numbers do not run in order down the columns. In Module 4 the TMA lessons are 12 and 13 while the examination lessons are 10 and 11. Reading the book front to back without this chart is how students end up preparing the wrong half.
Third, the split is uneven. Seven lessons for TMA against twelve for the examination means most of your reading is exam reading, not assignment reading.
Fourth, this sheet does not print a percentage weightage for TMA, unlike some other senior secondary subjects. Ask your study centre what internal weightage applies to your session rather than assuming a figure.
Natyakala 385 Question Paper Design and 60 Mark Split
Below is the official question paper design for Natyakala 385, reproduced in the original Hindi. It sets out the objective split, the number of questions, the marks per question, the module weightage with recommended study hours, and the difficulty spread.
The hash marks in the second table are not printing errors. They record how many questions in each section carry an internal alternative, which matters when you decide what to skip under time pressure.

What the Natyakala 385 Paper Actually Asks For
Twelve one mark objective questions plus nine two mark matching and fill in the blank questions come to 30 marks. That is exactly half the paper decided by precise recall of names, terms and definitions from Sanskrit and Hindi dramaturgy.
The written half is compact. Six very short answers of two marks, two short answers of three marks and two long answers of six marks. Those two long answers alone are worth 12 marks, the same as the entire MCQ section, so they deserve real planning.
Alternatives are offered in three places. Two of the six VSA questions, one of the two SA questions and one of the two LA questions carry a choice. That is thin cover, so you cannot afford large blank areas in your preparation.
Difficulty is set at 25 percent difficult, 50 percent medium and 25 percent easy. Working through a real NIOS Class 12 question paper against this blueprint is the quickest way to feel the two hour time limit.
Reading the Natyakala 385 Marks Table Module by Module
Three modules carry 12 marks each. Together they hold 36 of the 60 marks, and all three sit at different ends of the syllabus, so a plan that works from module one to module six in order will misallocate your time badly.
Module 1, Introduction to Natyakala, 12 marks
Indian dramatic tradition with its history, a short introduction to the Natyashastra, the relationship between drama and the other arts, and the aesthetics of drama. Two lessons here go to TMA and two to the examination, so your exam load is the lighter half.
Module 2, Main Elements of Natyakala, 10 marks
Plot, characterisation and an introduction to acting. Only one lesson goes to TMA, leaving characterisation and acting as examination material. These two topics generate clean definition questions and are worth learning precisely rather than loosely.
Module 3, Ras Vimarsh, 8 marks
The smallest module by marks and entirely an examination module. It covers the concept of rasa and the rasa sutra along with the idea of the sahridaya, the responsive spectator. Sanskrit terminology has to be exact here, because most of these marks arrive as one and two mark objective questions.
Module 4, Introduction to Indian Plays, 12 marks
Four named plays, two on each side. Abhijnanashakuntalam and Mrichchhakatika are examination lessons, while Dhruvaswamini and Prabodhachandrodaya go to TMA. Learn the playwright, period, characters and central conflict of each rather than trying to memorise the full text.
Checking topic patterns against a NIOS Class 12 previous year question paper set will show how often the named plays reappear in slightly reworded form.
Module 5, Stagecraft and Design, 12 marks
Stage types and stagecraft, stage music, the nine rasas in practice, and gesture and facial acting. Two lessons go each way. Stage music and navarasa sadhana are the examination lessons and both reward diagrams and examples over long prose.
Module 6, Folk Theatre, 6 marks
The smallest module, and again entirely an examination module. Major folk theatre and folk dance forms of India, plus the role of music within folk theatre. Six marks from two lessons with named regional forms makes this a compact, high return topic.
Study Hours NIOS Recommends for Natyakala 385
The design sheet carries a column most students skip. It sets out recommended self-study hours per module, adding to 190 hours for the course. Modules 1, 4 and 5 are given 40 hours each, Module 2 gets 30, and Modules 3 and 6 get 20 each.
Those numbers are a useful reality check. Spread over a nine month session, 190 hours is roughly five hours a week. Students who treat Natyakala as a light subject and give it an hour a week are working at a fifth of the intended pace.
The Seven TMA Lessons of Natyakala 385 and How to Write Them
TMA stands for Tutor Marked Assignment. For 385 it covers seven lessons. You write the answers yourself, submit them to your allotted study centre, and the tutor marks them.
The seven lessons are the Indian dramatic tradition, the short introduction to the Natyashastra, plot, Dhruvaswamini, Prabodhachandrodaya, stage types, and gesture and facial acting.
Notice the shape of that list. Two play studies, two theory lessons, one on plot and two on the practical side of performance. It asks you to move between reading a text and describing a performance, and the best answers do both rather than staying purely theoretical.
Write in Hindi unless your study centre tells you otherwise, since the course material is in Hindi. Keep Sanskrit terms in Devanagari and spell them carefully. Simple labelled sketches help a great deal in the stagecraft answers. Our NIOS solved assignment sets follow the format evaluators expect.
A Workable Study Plan for Natyakala 385
Begin with Modules 3 and 6. Between them they are only 14 marks, but all four lessons are examination lessons and neither module gives you any TMA practice beforehand. Clearing them early removes the part students consistently postpone.
Build one terminology page per module. Rasa names, the sahridaya idea, stage types, folk forms by state, characters and playwrights of the four plays. This sheet is what wins the 30 objective marks, where there is no partial credit.
Practise the two long answers separately. Twelve marks from two questions in a two hour paper means roughly fifteen minutes each with a clear structure of introduction, three or four developed points and a short conclusion.
In the last fortnight, write two full papers under timed conditions. The point is not the score. The point is finishing all 31 questions inside two hours with the long answers still readable.
Notes and Solved TMA Help for Natyakala 385 Students
Unnati Educations has worked with NIOS students since 2010. For 385 we provide solved TMA sets covering all seven assignment lessons in typed and handwritten formats, previous year papers with model answers, and lesson wise notes across all 19 lessons.
Natyakala has fewer coaching options than mainstream subjects, which is exactly why students get stuck on it. Doubt support runs on WhatsApp, so questions about answer structure, Devanagari spelling of technical terms or submission dates are usually resolved the same day.
Where Natyakala 385 Leads After Senior Secondary
Natyakala is a genuine head start for anyone planning to apply to a drama school or a performing arts degree. Institutions such as the National School of Drama and university theatre departments look for candidates who already understand rasa theory and stagecraft vocabulary, and this syllabus supplies both.
Performance routes include stage actor, theatre director, assistant director and voice or movement work. Regional and folk theatre companies across India also take trainees who know the forms.
Production routes are the quieter and steadier side. Set design, lighting, costume, stage management and props are all crafts where Module 5 is directly relevant and where trained people are genuinely short.
Teaching is another common path. Drama teacher in a school, workshop facilitator, or theatre in education practitioner, usually after a degree in performing arts or education.
The skills also travel. Script work, screen acting, content creation, event management and anchoring all draw on the same training in voice, timing and audience awareness.

Last Word on the NIOS Natyakala Syllabus Class 12
Modules 1, 4 and 5 hold 36 of the 60 marks. Add Module 2 and you are at 46. The remaining 14 marks come from Ras Vimarsh and Loknatya, both of which are entirely examination modules. That is the whole subject in three sentences.
Work from the official bifurcation sheet above, keep a terminology page for the objective half, plan the two long answers properly, and write two timed papers before the exam. Sixty marks in two hours is a short, fast paper and preparation shows immediately.
If you need solved TMAs, previous year papers, notes or a straight answer about a submission date, message us and we will help.

Common Doubts About the Natyakala 385 Syllabus
Q1: How many lessons and modules are there in NIOS Natyakala 385?
Natyakala 385 has 19 lessons arranged in six modules, and there is no optional module to choose from. Seven of those lessons are assessed through the TMA and the remaining twelve appear in the public examination. The theory paper carries 60 marks and contains 31 questions, and you are given two hours to complete it rather than the usual three.
Q2: Which lessons of Natyakala 385 go to TMA and which come in the exam?
The seven TMA lessons are numbers 1, 2, 5, 12, 13, 14 and 17. The twelve public examination lessons are numbers 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 18 and 19. Note that modules 3 and 6 send nothing at all to TMA, so all four of their lessons are examination material. The official chart above shows this module by module.
Q3: How are the 60 marks divided across modules in Natyakala 385?
Introduction to Natyakala carries 12 marks, Main Elements carries 10 marks, Ras Vimarsh carries 8 marks, Introduction to Indian Plays carries 12 marks, Stagecraft and Design carries 12 marks, and Folk Theatre carries 6 marks. Three modules therefore hold 36 of the 60 marks between them. Together the six modules add up to the full 60 theory marks.
Q4: What is the question paper pattern for the Natyakala 385 theory exam?
The paper carries 60 marks across 31 questions in two hours. There are 12 one mark multiple choice questions and 9 two mark matching and fill in the blank questions, giving 30 objective marks. The written half has 6 very short answer questions of two marks, 2 short answer questions of three marks and 2 long answer questions of six marks each.
Q5: Does the Natyakala 385 paper offer any internal choice to students?
Yes, but less than most subjects. The design sheet marks alternatives with hash symbols. Two of the six very short answer questions carry an alternative choice, one of the two short answer questions carries an alternative, and one of the two long answer questions carries an alternative. The 30 objective marks offer no choice at all, so gaps in preparation show up quickly.
Q6: Is Natyakala 385 study material available in English or only in Hindi?
The NIOS course material for Natyakala is published in Hindi, and both the syllabus sheet and the question paper design are issued in Devanagari, as reproduced above. Answers are normally written in Hindi too. If you are more comfortable in English, check with your study centre before the session begins, because medium options can differ between regional centres.
Q7: How many study hours does NIOS recommend for Natyakala 385?
The official design sheet allots 190 self study hours across the course. Modules 1, 4 and 5 are given 40 hours each, Module 2 is given 30 hours, and Modules 3 and 6 are given 20 hours each. Spread across a nine month session that works out at roughly five hours a week, which is more than most students plan for this subject.
Q8: How does Unnati Educations help with NIOS Natyakala 385 preparation?
We supply solved TMA sets covering all seven assignment lessons in typed and handwritten formats, previous year question papers with model answers, and lesson wise notes across all 19 lessons of the course. Support is available in Hindi, which matters for this subject. Doubt queries over WhatsApp about answer structure, terminology or submission dates usually get resolved the same day.
