What the BPCS 185 Solved Question Paper June 2026 covers

BPCS 185 Developing Emotional Competence is a 4-credit psychology skill course that IGNOU offers to learners in Bachelor of Arts (General), Bachelor of Commerce (General) and Bachelor of Science (General).

The June 2026 paper follows the course from start to finish: what emotions are and why we have them, how they shape behaviour, emotional intelligence and its components, and the self-skills IGNOU groups under emotional competence, namely self-regard, self-actualisation, self-control, self-regulation and assertiveness.

Our file answers each question in the 300-word shape the paper asks for, and writes the two short notes in Question 8 in about 150 words each. That matters in a 2-hour, 50-mark paper where you attempt five questions and every answer is marked against a word limit.

What makes this paper friendly is that it is almost entirely concept-and-strategy based. There are no numericals and no case studies, so marks depend on defining a term cleanly, splitting your answer to match the printed marks such as 4+6, and naming practical strategies with everyday examples.

BPCS 185 sample answers from the June 2026 paper

Questions 1 and 2 from Section A are fully solved below; the other six questions appear only as printed text, and their answers are in the full file.

Both answers were written by our team for this page. They show the structure we use throughout the file: a short introduction, a body split to match the printed marks, a real-life example, and a one-line conclusion.

Sample 1 of 2 Question 1 ยท Section A 10 marks

Question 1 (Section A, 5+5 marks)

1. Describe the nature of emotions and explain the functions served by emotions. 5+5

Answer

An emotion is a short-lived, complex reaction to an event that matters to us. It combines a feeling, bodily changes, a way of judging the event and an urge to act. Fear when a stray dog runs towards you, or joy when your result is declared, are everyday examples.

Nature of emotions (5 marks)

  • Multi-component: every emotion has a subjective feeling, physiological arousal through the autonomic nervous system (faster heartbeat, quicker breathing), a cognitive appraisal of the event, and expressive behaviour in the face, voice and posture.
  • Appraisal-driven: the same event can make one student anxious and another excited, because emotion depends on how the event is interpreted.
  • Brief and intense: emotions are shorter and sharper than moods, which are milder, last longer and often have no clear cause. Feelings are the private, conscious experience of an emotion.
  • Action tendencies: each emotion prepares a type of action. Fear prepares us to escape, anger to confront and joy to approach and share.
  • Universal yet learned: Paul Ekman's research showed that facial expressions of basic emotions such as happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise and disgust are recognised across cultures, while display rules about when to show them are learned within each culture.

Functions of emotions (5 marks)

  • Intrapersonal functions: emotions prepare the body for action, direct attention, colour memory and guide decisions. Anxiety before an exam, for instance, pushes a learner to revise.
  • Interpersonal functions: emotions communicate our inner state to others. A worried face invites help, a smile signals friendliness, and shared emotions such as love and gratitude build relationships.
  • Social and cultural functions: emotions keep group life orderly. Guilt and shame discourage people from breaking norms, while pride and admiration reward behaviour a group values.

Conclusion: emotions are not enemies of reason but useful signals. Understanding their nature and functions is the first step of emotional competence, because it helps us use emotions instead of being ruled by them.

Sample 2 of 2 Question 2 ยท Section A 10 marks

Question 2 (Section A, 5+5 marks)

2. How do emotions affect behaviour ? Is it possible to manage emotions ? Explain with examples. 5+5

Answer

Emotions, thinking and behaviour work as a loop. How we interpret a situation creates an emotion, the emotion shapes what we do, and our actions then change the situation and our next thoughts. This is why learning to manage emotions changes behaviour too.

How emotions affect behaviour (5 marks)

  • Action tendencies: fear pushes us to avoid, anger to attack or protest, and happiness to approach others. A student who fears the viva may skip practice sessions altogether.
  • Attention and perception: an anxious person notices threats more quickly, and an angry driver may read an ordinary horn as an insult.
  • Thinking and decisions: positive emotions broaden thinking and creativity, as Barbara Fredrickson's broaden-and-build theory explains, while intense negative emotions narrow focus and invite impulsive choices, such as sending an angry message.
  • Memory: emotionally charged events are remembered better, and people in a low mood tend to recall more unhappy memories.
  • Performance and health: moderate arousal improves performance while very high arousal disrupts it, as the Yerkes-Dodson law describes. Long-lasting stress and anger can also harm health and relationships.

Can emotions be managed? (5 marks)

Yes. Managing emotions does not mean hiding them; it means regulating when and how strongly they are felt and expressed. James Gross's process model describes five strategies:

  • Situation selection: avoiding a group that spreads exam panic the night before a paper.
  • Situation modification: asking a friend to stop discussing results while you are still revising.
  • Attentional deployment: shifting attention to your breathing or to the next question instead of a difficult one.
  • Cognitive change (reappraisal): seeing low marks in an assignment as feedback rather than proof of failure.
  • Response modulation: deep breathing, exercise, or counting to ten before replying.

Research by Gross and John found that habitual reappraisal is linked with better well-being than habitual suppression. For example, an employee criticised in a meeting can notice the anger, pause, reframe the comment as feedback, and later respond assertively instead of shouting.

Conclusion: emotions strongly drive behaviour, but self-awareness, self-control and reappraisal make them manageable, which is the core idea of emotional competence.

Questions answered only in the full file

These six questions are listed exactly as printed in the June 2026 paper. Their answers are not shown on this page and are available only in the full solved file.

  1. Q3 (Section A, 10 marks): Explain self-regard. Describe the strategies to develop self-regard.
  2. Q4 (Section A, 5+5 marks): Explain self-actualization. Describe the strategies to develop self-actualization.
  3. Q5 (Section B, 4+6 marks): Explain the meaning of self-control. Describe the strategies to develop self-control.
  4. Q6 (Section B, 10 marks): Define emotional intelligence. Describe the components of emotional intelligence.
  5. Q7 (Section B, 10 marks): Describe the strategies to develop emotional competence.
  6. Q8 (Section B, 5+5 marks): Write short notes on the following in about 150 words each : (a) Self-regulations (b) Meaning and importance of assertiveness

Between them, these questions cover the four self-skills of the course, the two big ideas of emotional intelligence and emotional competence, and a short note on assertiveness that IGNOU has asked in some form in six of the eight papers we checked.

Developing Emotional Competence syllabus themes in BPCS 185

BPCS 185 is built around six themes, moving from what emotions are, to emotional intelligence, to the self-skills that make up emotional competence.

eGyanKosh lists BPCS 185 units under more than one block layout, so we have grouped the syllabus by theme and marked block numbers we could not confirm. The two unit titles shown in quotes are taken from eGyanKosh.

BPCS 185 Developing Emotional Competence syllabus themes mapped to the June 2026 questions
Course theme Where it sits in the IGNOU material Topics you must know June 2026 question
Emotions: nature, types and functions Opening units [VERIFY block and unit] Components of an emotion; emotions vs feelings vs mood; Ekman's basic emotions and universality of expression Q1, Q2
Emotional intelligence [VERIFY block and unit] What EI is and is not; IQ vs EQ; history from Salovey and Mayer (1990) to Goleman (1995) Q6
Emotional competence and its domains Block-2 Emotional Competencies [VERIFY unit] Self-awareness, social awareness and social skills; alexithymia; emotional awareness in oneself and in others Q8(a)

Self-regard and self-actualisation Unit "Emotions, Self-Regard and Self-Actualization", Block-3 Developing Emotional Competencies Self-concept vs self-esteem vs self-regard; prerequisites for self-regard; Maslow's hierarchy of needs Q3, Q4

For unit-wise notes on each of these themes, our BPCS 185 Study Material breaks every topic into exam-length points you can revise in the last week.

BPCS 185 Question Paper pattern and marks split

The BPCS 185 Question Paper has 8 questions of 10 marks each in two sections; you answer any five, with at least two from each section, in 2 hours for 50 marks.

IGNOU BPCS 185 June 2026 question paper pattern and marks split
Question Section Marks as printed Words expected What it tests
Q1 A 5+5 About 300 Nature of emotions and their functions
Q2 A 5+5 About 300 Emotions and behaviour, and managing emotions
Q3 A 10 About 300 Self-regard and how to build it
Q4 A 5+5 About 300 Self-actualisation and how to build it
Q5 B 4+6 About 300 Self-control and how to build it
Q6 B 10 About 300 Emotional intelligence and its components
Q7 B 10 About 300 Strategies to develop emotional competence
Q8 B 5+5 About 150 per note Short notes: self-regulation; assertiveness

With 2 hours for five answers, you get roughly 24 minutes per question. A sensible plan is three questions from the section you know better and two from the other, which still meets the rule of at least two per section.

Watch the split marks. In Question 5 (4+6), the strategies part carries more weight than the meaning, so give it more lines. The IGNOU BPCS 185 Question Paper is set as a bilingual paper, so you may answer in English or Hindi.

IGNOU's official BPCS 185 assignment for July 2025 to January 2026 confirms the course carries 4 credits, with assignments worth 30 per cent and the term-end exam worth 70 per cent of your final result.

BPCS 185 topics IGNOU keeps repeating

Self-control, emotional intelligence and the nature of emotions appeared in all eight IGNOU papers we checked, and all three are asked again in June 2026.

We counted topics in eight official papers from IGNOU's websites: June 2022, December 2022, June 2023, December 2023, June 2024, December 2024, June 2025 and December 2025. A topic is counted once per paper, even if it appears in two questions.

BPCS 185 topic frequency across eight IGNOU term-end papers, June 2022 to December 2025

Assertiveness: meaning, importance and strategies June 2022, December 2022, December 2023, June 2024, December 2024, June 2025 6 of 8 Yes, Q8(b)
Self-actualisation: meaning and strategies June 2022, December 2022, December 2024, June 2025 4 of 8 Yes, Q4
Emotions, thinking and behaviour June 2023, June 2024, December 2025 3 of 8 Yes, Q2

Sub-components of self-regulation and self-motivation June 2023, December 2023, December 2025 3 of 8 Yes, Q8(a)

Two patterns stand out. First, IGNOU likes to pair a meaning question with a strategies question, as in self-regard, self-control and self-actualisation. Second, emotional awareness, asked seven times, is missing from June 2026, which makes it a strong candidate for December 2026.

If you want predicted questions built on this kind of analysis, our IGNOU Important Questions page lists course-wise guess papers for the coming term-end exam.

How our Developing Emotional Competence answers are written and checked

Every answer is written against the IGNOU self-learning material for Developing Emotional Competence, then checked for accuracy, marks split and word length.

Our writer first maps each question to its course theme and lists the terms an examiner looks for, such as display rules, reappraisal, alexithymia or the hierarchy of needs. Only concepts and psychologists the course actually uses go into the answer.

Each answer then follows the descriptive format IGNOU's own assignment guidance asks for: a short introduction, a body divided to match the printed marks, at least one everyday Indian example, and a crisp conclusion. Short notes in Question 8 are kept to about 150 words.

Finally, Sheetal Kirola reviews the file, checking definitions against the study material, confirming that 4+6 or 5+5 splits are respected, and trimming any answer that runs well past the 300-word limit.

Programmes that carry BPCS 185 Developing Emotional Competence

IGNOU files the BPCS 185 paper under three bachelor's programmes: BAG, BCOMG and BSCG.

The June 2026 paper itself is headed Bachelor's Degree Programme (BDP), while IGNOU's previous-paper archive stores BPCS 185 in its BAG-BCOMG-BSCG folder. Learners from all three streams therefore sit the same paper with the same eight questions.

In the IGNOU Bachelor of Arts (General) (BAG), BPCS 185 is a natural fit for learners who take psychology, because it turns theory about emotions into practical self-skills.

In the Bachelor of Commerce (General) (BCOMG) and Bachelor of Science (General) (BSCG), it serves as a 4-credit course that IGNOU's 2025-26 assignment labels an Ability Enhancement Course. Commerce and science learners often find it scoring, since answers rely on clear definitions and examples rather than calculations.

Which BPCS 185 topics repeat most in IGNOU papers?

Across the eight papers we checked, from June 2022 to December 2025, three topics appeared every time: the nature and functions of emotions, emotional intelligence and its components, and self-control. Emotional awareness and strategies for developing emotional competence appeared seven times each, while self-regard and assertiveness came up in six papers. Revise these themes first.

How many questions must I attempt in the BPCS 185 exam?

You attempt any five of the eight questions, with at least two from Section A and at least two from Section B. Every question carries 10 marks, so the paper totals 50 marks in 2 hours. Full answers should run about 300 words, and Question 8 asks for two short notes of about 150 words each.

Is BPCS 185 Developing Emotional Competence a theory or practical course?

It is a theory course with no practical file or lab record. IGNOU assesses it through tutor marked assignments, worth 30 per cent of the final result, and a written term-end exam worth 70 per cent. That is why this page carries a solved file index showing each question, its course theme and where its answer appears, instead of a practical index.

Which programmes include BPCS 185 Developing Emotional Competence?

IGNOU files the BPCS 185 paper under its Bachelor of Arts (General), Bachelor of Commerce (General) and Bachelor of Science (General) programmes, so learners in BAG, BCOMG and BSCG can all take it. It is a 4-credit psychology skill course, which is why students from commerce and science backgrounds sit the same paper as arts students.

Were the BPCS 185 answers written from the IGNOU study material?

Yes. Our subject experts wrote each answer after studying the IGNOU self-learning material for Developing Emotional Competence and the previous papers from June 2022 to December 2025. Every answer uses the concepts and psychologists named in the course, such as Goleman and Maslow, and Sheetal Kirola reviewed the file for accuracy, structure and word length before release.

Can the BPCS 185 June 2026 answers help in the December 2026 exam?

They can, because IGNOU repeats BPCS 185 themes closely. Self-control, emotional intelligence and the nature of emotions appeared in every paper we checked, and most June 2026 questions revisit topics asked before. Learning these answers prepares you for likely December 2026 questions too, though IGNOU never repeats a paper word for word, so read each question carefully.
