Our subject experts took the official June 2026 paper and wrote complete answers for all 7 questions, from the Ganga comprehension to the folk theatre essay, at the length IGNOU examiners expect. Two answers are open below; the full file comes on WhatsApp 9899436384.

1. What the BEGC-131 Solved Question Paper June 2026 Covers

BEGC-131 Individual and Society is an English language course in IGNOU's Bachelor of Arts (General) programme, also taught in the Bachelor of Arts Multidisciplinary, that builds reading, vocabulary, grammar and writing through four themed blocks.

The June 2026 paper tests each of those skills in seven compulsory questions worth 100 marks, so a weak grammar section can cost as much as a weak essay.

This BEGC-131 Question Paper opens with a 20-mark passage on the river Ganga and its pollution. It then moves to ten vocabulary matches, fifteen grammar items, a hill station dialogue, a letter about a Meditation and Yoga Camp, a speech on conserving natural resources and an essay on the folk theatre of India.

One detail stood out when we compared papers. The Ganga passage in June 2026 is word for word the passage IGNOU used in June 2022, while June 2023 carried a different Ganga passage. If you are tracking other courses in your degree, our BAG Question Paper collection follows the same June and December session labels.

2. BEGC-131 Sample Answers: Ganga Comprehension and Folk Theatre Essay

Two questions from the June 2026 BEGC-131 paper are solved in full here: Question 1 (20 marks) and Question 7 (15 marks).

Together they cover 35 of the 100 marks, so you can judge the depth and style of the whole file before you contact us.

Question 1 Block 1: The Environment 20 marks (15 + 5) Same passage as June 2022

Question 1. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below:

The river Ganga has a unique position in the cultural ethos of India. From time immemorial, the Ganga has been worshipped as a sacred river and even today it is regarded as the holiest of rivers by many Indians. Apart from its cultural significance, the river has great importance for the Indian economy. The densely populated Ganga basin is inhabited by 37% of India's population. About 47% of the total irrigated area of the country is located in the Ganga basin.

Most of the original natural vegetation has disappeared from the Ganga basin which was once densely forested, and the land is now intensively cultivated to meet the needs of an ever-growing population. Wild animals are few, and the Ganga river dolphin once found throughout the Ganga-Brahmaputra basin, is considered endangered because of encroaching human activity. Concern has grown over the environmental impact of hydroelectric dams on the river, including habitat destruction for wildlife, forced relocation of people living in the paths of dams and reservoirs and loss of agricultural land.

Of greater concern, however, has been the degradation in the quality of the river water itself. The Ganga basin is one of the densely inhabited regions on Earth, with the result that the river, over much of its course, is highly polluted. The principal sources of pollution of the Ganga are domestic and industrial wastes. Scores of cities and towns dump untreated sewage into the Ganga, and dozens of manufacturing facilities dump industrial waste. High levels of disease-causing bacteria, as well as toxic substances such as chromium, cadmium, and arsenic have been found in the Ganga. The first step in improving the water quality would be to control the dumping of domestic and industrial waste from the numerous towns along the river's course.

(a)(i) Why is the river Ganga said to occupy a unique position in the cultural ethos of India? (2)

The Ganga holds a unique place in India's cultural ethos because it has been worshipped as a sacred river from time immemorial. Even today, many Indians regard it as the holiest of all rivers, so it is closely tied to their faith, rituals and sense of identity.

(a)(ii) According to this passage, the river Ganga is extremely important for the Indian economy. Why? (2)

The Ganga matters greatly to the Indian economy because its densely populated basin is home to 37% of India's population. In addition, about 47% of the country's total irrigated area lies in the Ganga basin, which makes the river vital for farming and food production.

(a)(iii) What are the main sources of pollution of the Ganga? (2)

The main sources of pollution are domestic and industrial wastes. Scores of cities and towns dump untreated sewage into the Ganga, and dozens of manufacturing units discharge their industrial waste into it.

(a)(iv) In what way has intensive cultivation and urbanisation affected the natural life of the Ganga basin? (2)

Intensive cultivation and growing human settlement have wiped out most of the original vegetation of the basin, which was once densely forested. As a result, wild animals have become few, and the Ganga river dolphin, once found throughout the Ganga-Brahmaputra basin, is now considered endangered.

(a)(v) There are numerous hydroelectric dams on the river. What is the environmental impact of this? (2)

The hydroelectric dams have destroyed the habitat of wildlife and forced people living in the paths of dams and reservoirs to move away. They have also caused the loss of agricultural land.

(a)(vi) What is the first step to be taken to clean up the river Ganga? (2)

The first step is to control the dumping of domestic and industrial waste from the many towns along the river's course. Stopping untreated sewage and factory waste at the source would quickly improve the quality of the water.

(a)(vii) What are the major chemical pollutants found in the river? (2)

The passage names three toxic chemical pollutants: chromium, cadmium and arsenic. Along with these chemicals, high levels of disease-causing bacteria have also been found in the river.

(a)(viii) Give a suitable title of this passage. (1)

The Ganga: A Sacred River in Danger

(b) Use the following words in sentences of your own: 5 × 1 = 5

  1. endangered: The tiger is an endangered species, so poaching it is treated as a serious crime in India.
  2. habitat: Cutting down mangroves destroys the natural habitat of many birds and fish.
  3. degradation: Overgrazing has led to the degradation of the grasslands around our village.
  4. unique: Every student has a unique way of learning, so a good teacher stays patient.
  5. reverence: The pilgrims bowed their heads in reverence as the evening aarti began on the ghats of Varanasi.

Question 7 Block 3: Culture and Entertainment 15 marks About 250 words

Question 7. Write an essay (in about 250 words) on the following topic: (15)

Folk Theatre of India

Folk Theatre of India

Long before cinema halls and mobile screens, villages across India gathered under the open sky to watch stories come alive. Folk theatre is the people's own stage. It grows out of local languages, music, dance and faith, and it is usually performed by community artists rather than by formally trained actors.

Almost every region has its own form. Yakshagana from coastal Karnataka blends dance, drumming and grand headgear to retell stories from the epics, often through the whole night. Jatra draws huge crowds in Bengal and Odisha, Nautanki entertains audiences in Uttar Pradesh, and Tamasha in Maharashtra mixes song, dance and sharp humour.

Gujarat has Bhavai, Tamil Nadu has Therukoothu and Kashmir has Bhand Pather, known for its satire. In Assam, Ankiya Naat, created by the saint-reformer Srimanta Sankardev, is still performed in the sattras. Though different in language and costume, all these forms share music, simple stages, bold make-up and direct talk with the audience.

Folk theatre has always done more than entertain. It has carried myths and history to people who could not read, mocked the powerful through humour, and in modern times spread messages about health, literacy and social reform. Its flexible, partly improvised style lets performers respond to the mood of each audience.

Today these traditions face stiff competition from television, cinema and online videos, and many artists struggle to earn a living. Support through bodies such as the Sangeet Natak Akademi, festival stages and school programmes can help. If we value our folk theatre and watch it live, we keep alive a rich part of India's cultural memory.

Note: this essay runs to about 280 words, a little over the suggested length, so that a student can trim any one regional example and still keep a complete answer.

4. BEGC-131 Individual and Society Blocks and Units at a Glance

BEGC-131 has four blocks of four units each, and every block feeds at least one question in the June 2026 paper.

The course uses everyday themes as reading material, then builds language and writing practice around them.

BEGC-131 Individual and Society block and unit structure linked to June 2026 questions
BlockUnitsWhere it shows up in June 2026
Block 1: The EnvironmentUnit 1 Animal Rights; Unit 2 Human Environment: A Speech; Unit 3 From a Cocoon with Hope; Unit 4 Saving the EnvironmentQuestion 1 Ganga pollution passage and Question 6 speech on natural vegetation and wildlife
Block 2: Travel and TourismUnit 1 Planning a Holiday; Unit 2 Hotels and Restaurants; Unit 3 Mountaineering in India; Unit 4 Assamese EnchantmentQuestion 4 dialogue about visiting a hill station
Block 3: Culture and EntertainmentUnit 1 Leisure; Unit 2 Rukmini Devi Arundale: A Life Dedicated to Art; Unit 3 Yakshagana; Unit 4 Communicating Across CulturesQuestion 7 essay on the folk theatre of India
Block 4: Health and FitnessUnit 1 Stem Cells; Unit 3 Aged People; Unit 4 Drugs of AbuseQuestion 5 letter about a Meditation and Yoga Camp

Unit titles above follow the official BEGC-131 course page on eGyanKosh, where IGNOU publishes the self-learning material block by block. Block 4 has four units in all; the title of its second unit is not listed on the page we could open, so check your own course book for it.

The Yakshagana unit in Block 3 is worth a special mention, because it gives you ready material for the folk theatre essay. If you want block-wise revision rather than past-paper practice, our BEGC-131 Study Material page is the place to start.

5. How the BEGC-131 Paper Is Marked Across Seven Questions

The June 2026 IGNOU BEGC-131 Question Paper had seven compulsory questions for 100 marks in 3 hours, with no internal choice anywhere.

Even the essay offered a single topic, so there was no way to skip a weak area.

BEGC-131 June 2026 question paper pattern and marks distribution
QuestionTask in June 2026MarksLength or format
1Reading comprehension on the river Ganga: 8 questions plus 5 word-use sentences20 (15 + 5)Short answers of 2 marks each and a 1-mark title
2Matching 10 words and phrases, from A lion's share to Promulgate, with their meanings10One mark per correct pair
3Fill in the blanks and rewrite as directed: 15 grammar items15One mark per item
4Dialogue with a friend about visiting a hill station15About 250 words
5Letter to a friend about a Meditation and Yoga Camp10No word limit printed; informal letter format
6Speech on conservation of natural resources, natural vegetation and wildlife15About 250 words
7Essay on the folk theatre of India15About 250 words, single topic

20 + 10 + 15 + 15 + 10 + 15 + 15 = 100 marks across 42 separately marked parts

Language questions 1 to 3 carry 45 marks and writing tasks 4 to 7 carry 55. That split matters: a student who only rehearses essays leaves almost half the paper to luck.

Notice also how the marks are spread inside those 45. Question 3 alone has fifteen one-mark items and Question 2 has ten, so 25 of the 100 marks come from single-mark answers where you are either right or wrong. There is no partial credit to fall back on, which makes grammar and vocabulary drill the highest-return revision in this course.

The layout is steady. The June 2023 and December 2023 papers used the same seven-question order with a 15-item grammar question, while June 2022 had a 20-mark grammar question and a 10-mark dialogue. You can compare them in our IGNOU Previous Year Question Paper archive.

6. BEGC-131 Tasks That Keep Coming Back in Official Papers

Across four official BEGC-131 papers (June 2022, June 2023, December 2023 and June 2026), the word-use task, 'resplendent', and the do/does and has/have blanks appeared in every single paper.

The count below covers only these four papers taken from IGNOU's own question-paper server.

Speech on water or natural resource conservationJune 2022, June 20262
Essay on an Indian performing art (classical dance, folk theatre)June 2022, June 20262

We could not retrieve the official December 2022, June 2024, December 2024, June 2025 and December 2025 papers for this count, so the table makes no five-year claim. Even so, the pattern is clear: vocabulary and grammar items recycle far more often than essay topics.

Read together with the marks split above, the lesson is blunt. The four items set in every paper are all one-mark vocabulary and grammar answers, and they sit in the part of the paper where you cannot earn half marks. Learning that short list properly is worth more than an extra hour on essay practice.

For predicted questions across other courses before your next exam, see our IGNOU Solved Guess Paper page, built on the same session-by-session checking.

7. How Our Individual and Society Answers Are Written and Checked

Every BEGC-131 answer in the file is written by Prateek Talwar and checked by Sheetal Kirola before it reaches students.

The goal is an answer you can understand and reproduce, not a wall of text to memorise.

Comprehension answers are written in the student's own words rather than copied from the passage, which the BEGC-131 assignment guidelines specifically ask for. Each 2-mark answer stays short and direct, with one supporting detail from the text.

For the dialogue, speech and essay, we keep close to the 250 words the paper asks for, with a clear opening and conclusion. The letter follows informal format with address, date, greeting and closing, the layout examiners look for first.

Before release, answers are compared with earlier official BEGC-131 papers. That is how we noticed the June 2022 Ganga passage returning in June 2026, and why the file points out repeated vocabulary such as 'resplendent' and 'a lion's share'.

8. BEGC-131 Solved File Index by Question and Course Block

The full file answers all 7 questions of the June 2026 BEGC-131 paper; 2 are solved on this page and 5 are in the full file only.

Individual and Society has no practical or record work, so instead of a practical index we map each question to its course block.

9. Programmes That Study BEGC-131 Individual and Society

BEGC-131 is studied in IGNOU's Bachelor of Arts (General), BAG, and in the four-year Bachelor of Arts Multidisciplinary, BAM.

The BAG assignment booklet lists it as a first semester course, and IGNOU issues a separate BAM booklet in the same three-section format.

Because BEGC-131 is an English course rather than a subject paper, it sits alongside discipline courses such as history or political science in the IGNOU Bachelor of Arts (General) structure. A pass here also strengthens the writing you need in every other paper.

11. BEGC-131 Individual and Society FAQs

These answers cover what BAG and BAM students ask us most about the BEGC-131 June 2026 paper and the full solved file.

Is the BEGC-131 June 2026 Ganga passage repeated from an older paper?

Yes. The June 2026 BEGC-131 passage on the river Ganga is the same passage IGNOU set in June 2022, and the comprehension questions are almost identical. The June 2023 paper used a different Ganga passage that discussed the river dolphin and the National Mission for Clean Ganga. Practising both passages closely is one of the smartest uses of revision time for this course.

How do I get all BEGC-131 June 2026 answers on WhatsApp?

Send the message 'BEGC 131 June 2026' on WhatsApp to 9899436384 and our team will reply with the details. Once you confirm, we share the complete PDF. It contains answers to all 7 questions of the June 2026 paper, including the 5 questions listed on this page without answers: the matching, grammar, dialogue, letter and speech questions.

How are marks divided in the BEGC-131 Individual and Society paper?

The June 2026 BEGC-131 paper carries 100 marks across 7 compulsory questions. Comprehension takes 20 marks, vocabulary matching 10 and grammar 15, so language skills account for 45 marks. The dialogue, speech and essay carry 15 marks each and the letter carries 10, giving 55 marks for writing. There is no internal choice, so every section needs preparation.

Which part of the BEGC-131 paper gives the quickest marks?

The one-mark items. Question 2 has ten matching pairs and Question 3 has fifteen grammar blanks, which is 25 marks decided by single right answers. They take far less time than a 250-word essay, but there is no partial credit, so each one has to be exactly right. Across the four papers we checked, 'resplendent', 'a lion's share', the do/does blank and the has/have blank keep returning, which makes them the best place to start.

Which BEGC-131 blocks are linked to the June 2026 questions?

All four BEGC-131 blocks appear in the June 2026 paper. Block 1, The Environment, links to the Ganga passage and the conservation speech. Block 2, Travel and Tourism, links to the hill station dialogue. Block 3, Culture and Entertainment, has a Yakshagana unit that supports the folk theatre essay, and Block 4, Health and Fitness, connects to the yoga camp letter.

Does BEGC-131 Individual and Society have a practical file?

No. BEGC-131 is a theory course built around English reading and writing, so it has no practical or record file. Assessment is through assignment work and the term-end exam; check your own programme guide for the number of assignments set in your session. That is why this page carries a solved file index instead, mapping each June 2026 question to its course block and showing whether its answer is on this page.

How long should BEGC-131 dialogue, speech and essay answers be?

The June 2026 BEGC-131 paper asks for about 250 words each in the dialogue, the speech and the essay. Staying close to that figure matters, because the course assignment guidelines also warn against exceeding the word count. The letter has no printed word limit, but a clear informal format with greeting, body and closing is expected. Our answers follow these lengths.

Who writes and checks the BEGC-131 solved answers?

BEGC-131 answers in this file are written by Prateek Talwar and reviewed by Sheetal Kirola before release. The team studied earlier official BEGC-131 papers to see which tasks repeat, then wrote each answer in simple, correct English at the length IGNOU asks for. The aim is clear understanding, not answers to memorise blindly.

Is BEGC-131 Individual and Society the same course for BAG and BAM?

Yes, BEGC-131 Individual and Society uses the same course code in the Bachelor of Arts (General), BAG, and the four-year Bachelor of Arts Multidisciplinary, BAM. IGNOU publishes a separate BAM assignment booklet, but it follows the same three-section format as the BAG booklet. The June 2026 paper header names BAG, so BAM learners should confirm the paper code on their hall ticket.

12. About the Authors

The BEGC-131 Individual and Society answers on this page were written and reviewed by Unnati Educations' own academic team.
