Her teacher explained that these are called "Palindrome Numbers", which read the same forwards and backwards. Write all palindrome numbers less than 100. Is there a particular number that is a factor of all of them? Will the numbers formed be rational or irrational?

(B) Anil was learning the Laws of Exponents. Using those laws: (i) Find the value of x if 5x × 32x−8 = 28,125. (ii) Simplify (20 + 70) / 50.

Question 2 · Answer any one in about 40 to 60 words

(a) Ratul and his friends set up a tent. Two ropes, AB and CD, cross each other at point O, and a third rope OP is tied at the intersection. From the figure, ∠AOP = 3x + 7, ∠BOP = x + 5, and ∠BOD = 40°. (i) What is the value of x? (ii) What is the measure of ∠BOP?

(b) Three friends, Sushma, Salma and Saloma, walk away from a fixed point in three directions such that each path is equally inclined to the other two. (i) Find the angles the paths make with each other. (ii) Name the type of lines formed by tracing the paths.

Question 3 · Answer any one in about 40 to 60 words

(a) A table shows the number of books read by students in a month across the intervals 0–5, 5–10, 10–15, 15–20 and 20–25, with 7, 12, 15, 10 and 6 students. (i) Find the class mark of the interval 15–20. (ii) Convert the frequency table into a cumulative frequency table.

(b) A company records monthly salaries (in thousands of rupees) for the ranges 10–20, 20–30, 30–40, 40–50 and 50–60, with 4, 7, 10, 15 and 9 employees. (i) Calculate the class width of each class. (ii) Explain whether the data is discrete or continuous, with justification.

Question 4 · Answer any one in 100 to 150 words

(a) The upper half of a door is semi-opaque glass in a wooden frame. The ratio of length to breadth of the upper half is 5:3. Subtracting 0.5 feet from the breadth and 1 foot from the length gives the glass portion. Taking length as 5x and breadth as 3x, (i) express the length and breadth of the glass in terms of x, and (ii) give the polynomial for the area of the glass and find its zeros.

(b) A curious student noticed the three consecutive primes 7, 11 and 13 and called them "The Prime Trio". (i) He added the three numbers. What kind of number results, and do all sets of three consecutive primes behave the same way? If not, give a counter-example. (ii) He took a three-digit number such as 157, wrote it again to its right to form 157157, then divided by 7, 11 and 13 in turn. What was the result? Make two more examples and note your observations.

Question 5 · Answer any one in 100 to 150 words

(a) A table shows the production (in million tonnes) of sugar substitutes by six units, A to F, from April to August. (i) In which month does unit B contribute about 15% of total production? (ii) Which unit shows a continuous increase? (iii) For unit F, in which pair of months was production equal? (iv) In July, how many units contribute more than 25% of total production?

(b) (i) A shopkeeper used a bar graph for daily sales and a histogram for customer ages. State two key differences between a bar graph and a histogram. (ii) Draw a histogram for the data in the intervals 1–10, 11–20, 21–30 and 31–40 with frequencies 15, 10, 5 and 8.

Question 6 · Project, prepare any one

(a) Sketch a rectangular village ABCD. Inside it, mark a triangular plot ΔAPD set aside for girls' education, with ∠APD = 60° and ∠PDA = 30°. Take BC as 10 km and extend DC to a point E such that CE = BC. (i) Draw the figure. (ii) Find ∠PAD. (iii) Find ∠BCE. (iv) Find the length BE. (v) If ΔAPD were equilateral, would ΔAPD be congruent to ΔBCE? Why or why not?

Sample 1 · Question 2(a) · Lines and Angles

Since AB is a straight line, the three angles standing on it at point O add up to a straight angle:

1. ∠AOP + ∠BOP + ∠BOD = 180°
2. Substitute the given expressions: (3x + 7) + (x + 5) + 40 = 180
3. Collect like terms: 4x + 52 = 180, so 4x = 128 and x = 32.
4. Now find the required angle: ∠BOP = x + 5 = 32 + 5 = 37°

Answer: x = 32, and ∠BOP = 37°.

Sample 2 · Question 4(b) · Number System

Part (i). Adding the trio gives 7 + 11 + 13 = 31, and 31 is a prime number. The pattern does not always repeat, though. Take the next trio, 3 + 5 + 7 = 15, which is divisible by 3 and 5, so it is composite. The sum of three consecutive primes is therefore sometimes prime and sometimes not.

Part (ii). Writing 157 twice gives 157157. Dividing successively by 7, 11 and 13 is the same as dividing by their product, and 7 × 11 × 13 = 1001. So 157157 ÷ 1001 = 157, the original number. This happens because any three-digit block written twice equals that block times 1001. Two more cases: 248248 ÷ 1001 = 248 and 736736 ÷ 1001 = 736.

Observation: repeating a three-digit number always yields a multiple of 1001, so the three divisions return the original three-digit number every time.
