Question 4 (attempt any one, 100–150 words)
(A) Haldane and Oparin proposed that life originated in shallow seas with a high concentration of organic compounds. What conditions did they suggest were necessary for the formation of these compounds? Name the scientists who provided experimental support to this hypothesis and describe the experiment conducted. (B) Identify the tissues present in the growing regions of plants, such as root and shoot tips, and describe their main characteristics. What are these tissues called once they lose their ability to divide? Also write a short note on vascular tissues and their functions in plants. (See Lesson 21)
Question 5 (attempt any one, 100–150 words)
(A) Ice cubes at −20°C are heated over a flame and temperatures are recorded at intervals. (i) Why does the temperature stay constant between 10 and 20 minutes, and again from 80 to 110 minutes, despite continuous heating, and where does the heat energy go? (ii) What is the amount of heat required per kilogram of ice and per kilogram of water during these processes?
(B) Sound waves and radio waves are used in communication devices. Name and describe the echo-based techniques that use these waves, and illustrate your explanation with relevant diagrams.
Question 6 (prepare any one project)
(A) Identify which among common salt, iron filings and sand is an element, compound or mixture, and justify your answer. Then explain, with suitable diagrams, the detailed processes to separate each component from a mixture of the three.
(B) Reena's new iron gate developed a brown flaky substance after the monsoon, and Sohan's boiled milk turned sour overnight. Explain the process behind the rusting of iron and the spoilage of milk, their ill effects seen around us, and at least three methods to prevent each.

This showed that under primitive earth conditions, complex organic compounds essential for life could form naturally, supporting the Haldane-Oparin hypothesis of life's origin.
