Complete Answer

Meaning of Assessment. Assessment is a systematic basis for making inferences about the learning and development of students. It is the process of defining, selecting, designing, collecting, analysing, interpreting and using information to increase the student's learning and development.

Assessment of Learning. This is summative in character. It identifies the standard of attainment achieved at a particular time, normally at the end of a period of instruction such as the end of a term or the end of a course. Grades on school reports and the results of external examinations are the typical examples. It judges what the student has already achieved and relies on tests, examinations and final products.

Assessment for Learning. This is formative in character. It is the process of seeking and interpreting evidence for use by learners and their teachers to decide where the learners are in their learning, where they need to go, and how best to get there. It draws on Vygotsky's idea of scaffolding and uses observation, feedback, peer assessment, self assessment and reflective tasks during instruction rather than after it.

The core shift. Assessment of learning makes a judgement about the finished product. Assessment for learning shifts the emphasis away from judgement and towards ongoing activities that support the next stage of learning. The first measures, the second improves.

Principles of Assessment. Continuity, since assessment runs as long as the education of the child runs. Comprehensiveness, since a graded pool of questions from simple to complex must test knowledge and values alike. Completeness, since the whole personality of the student is assessed. Child centredness, since the child and not the syllabus is the centre of evaluation.

Principles continued. Totality, since evaluation deals with the total behaviour of the individual at the social, intellectual, physical, moral and emotional levels. Application, since the better student is the one who can apply knowledge in different situations. Objectives, since evaluation must show how far the objectives of personality are being achieved. Learning experiences and quality complete the list, since assessment includes the lasting experiences gained from the teacher.

Conclusion. Assessment of learning measures the finished product while assessment for learning improves the learning process itself. The two are complementary. The principles of continuity, comprehensiveness, totality, application and objectives together ensure that assessment stays fair, holistic and growth oriented for every learner.

Sample Question 2. Normal Probability Curve, Concept and Characteristics, 16 marks

MDU style question. What is Normal Probability Curve (NPC)? Describe its concept and characteristics.

Complete Answer

Meaning. The Normal Probability Curve is a bell shaped curve showing a particular distribution of probability over the values of a random variable. It is also called the Gaussian curve. The graph of the probability density function of the normal distribution is a continuous bell shaped curve that is symmetrical about the mean.

Concept and importance. The NPC matters in statistics because it is the distribution of many naturally occurring variables, such as the intelligence of Class VIII students or the height of Class X students. The distribution of the means of samples drawn from most parent populations is normal or nearly normal when the samples are sufficiently large. In behavioural measurement most aspects approximate to the normal distribution, which is why the curve is used as a reference curve.

Characteristic 1. Bilaterally symmetrical. The curve is symmetrical about the ordinate of its central point. The size, shape and slope on one side are identical to the other. If the curve is bisected, the right half matches the left half completely.

Characteristic 2. Asymptotic. The curve approaches the horizontal axis and extends from minus infinity to plus infinity. The extreme ends tend towards the base line but never actually touch it.

Characteristic 3. Mean, median and mode coincide. All three measures of central tendency fall at the middle point of the curve and are numerically equal.

Characteristic 4. Points of inflection. These occur at one standard deviation above and below the mean. At these points the curve changes from convex to concave.

Characteristic 5. Area under the curve. The total area is divided into six standard deviation units, three positive and three negative. Between plus and minus one sigma lie 68.26 per cent of cases. Between plus and minus two sigma lie 95.44 per cent of cases. Between plus and minus three sigma lie 99.73 per cent of cases. The total area under the curve is equal to one.

Characteristic 6. Unimodal with a maximum ordinate. The curve has only one peak because the maximum frequency occurs at only one point. The y ordinate represents the height of the curve and the maximum ordinate occurs at the centre. The height declines symmetrically in both directions from the central point.

Characteristic 7. Statistical constants. The mean of the NPC is denoted by mu and the standard deviation by sigma. The standard deviation is 50 per cent larger than the quartile deviation. The average deviation about the mean is 0.798 sigma. The modal ordinate varies inversely with the standard deviation.

Conclusion. The Normal Probability Curve is bell shaped, bilaterally symmetrical, asymptotic and unimodal, and its mean, median and mode coincide. With 68.26, 95.44 and 99.73 per cent of cases falling within one, two and three sigma respectively, it forms the foundation of statistical inference in education.

MDU Exam Pattern for Assessment for Learning

The theory paper carries 80 marks and the internal assessment is awarded separately. The duration is three hours.

  • Nine questions are set in all and five must be attempted.
  • Q1 is compulsory and consists of short notes of 4 x 4 = 16 marks, drawn across all four units.
  • From Q2 to Q9, one question is attempted from each of Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3 and Unit 4, of 16 marks each.
  • Suggested answer lengths are about 400 words for a 16 mark answer and about 100 words for each short note.
  • Cross check your unit selection before you begin writing, since attempting two questions from one unit costs you a whole answer.

What You Can Safely Deprioritise

Numerical problems with full calculation tables, such as mean, median and mode for grouped data, do not repay deep practice. Formula awareness is enough, and a strong NPC theory answer earns more than a laborious computation. Single appearance topics such as full quartile deviation calculation or the drawing steps for pie and bar diagrams belong in your short note reserve, not in your main preparation.

Psychology theorists from the first year, such as Piaget, Vygotsky and Erikson, belong to Childhood and Growing Up rather than to this paper, and a comparison across the B.Ed important questions for each subject makes that split obvious. Long historical accounts of education commissions also attract little credit here, since examiners want pedagogical relevance rather than history.

How to Write Answers That MDU Examiners Reward
